Just wanna say I love your videos and find them very inspiring. I cant wait to make a full head mask but my only problem is that I can only afford 2 pounds of platsil gel-10 right now. :( Do you think if I used it sparingly in the back of the head I would have enough to make it sturdy in the front. would that work? Thanks.
Sorry, I have yet another question. What would you use to strengthen a mask? A material (strips) to lay onto the material while it's still tacky. Can I use nylon strips? Like pantyhose? I need for it to be fairly tough in addition to lifelike.
@Yanninyree Both Gel-10 and Gel-00 are plenty strong on their own. Panty hose in key areas will add some strength but if you over use it you will reduce the stretch.
How many rolls of plaster bandage were used in this lifecast? You had mentioned before 2 2lb kits (total of 4lbs of gel 10?) is that correct? Incredible video btw you guys are amazing.
@scarboroughdiver85 I recommend about 6 rolls of 4" plaster bandages. We did use just under 4lbs of silicone and that will give you very good coverage on an average size head.
Maybe im mixing wrong the Gel 10 cause when i mix it and pour it, when it sets off it get very sticky instead of getting dry to make the cast, any heads up?
2 questions: 1- Does Gel-00 work just as well for lifecasting or is it too soft?
2- If you wanted to make a permanent negative of an arm for example, to repeatedly cast rubber arms for props... (Silicone seems like a very expensive molding material for something like that) but if you did use silicone for the negative, what kind of rubber would you recommend using for the casting, (as I believe I understand that Latex does not get along well with silicone molds)
@bigpapa1023 1.Gel-00 is probably too soft for lifecasting applications. 2. A Gel-10 negative mold is not really that expensive when you consider the cost of making an alginate mold, correcting the positive, and then making another permenant mold.
Latex will cure in a silicone mold but it takes a long time since silicone is not pourous.
Very carefully. Subjects with long hair can slick their hair back in a pony tail, wrap it in plastic wrap and tape it to their back. The rest of their hair is covered with a bald cap.
@crowofdeath2 : Also straws can disort the nostril shape. Worse still, you can carve a groove in the nose cavity if you accidentally knock it...I advise not to use straws!
A dumb question - what is the point of using this material?
It strikes me as being similar to Alginate but with a huge number of drawbacks. The amount of layers needed, the amount of time the model must sit under it, and the amount of difficulty in removing it. Also, you have the trouble with plastic/latex baldcaps, as well as the expense.
What is the point of this material in light of all of this? It strikes me as a lot of effort to avoid having to do a plaster positive and work off that.
Hello, I use deadener to soften platsil but it burns a hole in my pocket, Do you know how to make a softener? I can get silicone oil cheap but it dont have the same effect as deadener and slacker so I was wondering if you know what to add to the oil to make it like deadener or slacker.
Deadener is a combination of several silicone additives. Silicone fluid is a good way to soften silicone but it won't lower the modulous the way Deadener will. Sorry but there is no cheap way to get the same effect.
It will cure on a latex cap? I've done a head cast in bodydouble, and it won't cure without a vinyl bald cap...I have a gel 10 kit ready for Halloween...can thivex be added as a thickener? Is it platinum cure? Also, you forgot the most import'nt fact with this compared to alginate...you can use the silicone cast for unlimited castings...alginate is a one shot deal....
If you apply a good coat of vaseline to the cap you will only get a slight inhibition at the surface of the gel-1- contacting the cap. This inhibition goes away once the rubber is removed from the subject and allowed to completely cure.
Cool...I missed you saying this at the beginning...I paid 27 bucks for the vinyl cap...as apposed to the 2 or 3 for a cheapo latex one...I'm still a neophyte, but having fun messing with silicone...if only I started 20 years ago! I'm doing a "Jack" (from "American Werewolf") makeup on a friend for Halloween...gonna film it and try to start posting some stuff...
Cool video again Mr. Brick!! HAHA!! LOVE that you thought it "IMPORT'NT" enough to include that word again in your video just for my entertainment. I just think it's funny the way you say it - must be a Texas thing or something!! HAHA!! Seriously, thanks for the great video though. It's all about the Platsil. I dig it. BUT MAN I wish is wasn't so bloody expensive to use. Maybe I should become a Polytek distributor and then I'd have it for less and use it all the time. :o)

@daboognish88 Depends on what type of mask you are making. If you are on a tight budget small prosthetics with Gel-10 are the way to go.

can you just apply striaght to skin, if you are shaved c ompletely
CalebaKing 6 months ago
@CalebaKing Yes, but it is still a good idea to use a little vaseline to aid in demolding.

Can i do the same on a plaster cast model?
jorgealexmr 7 months ago
@jorgealexmr Yes. You van mold a plaster copy this way if you release it first with mold soap and a spray release such as 2500.

How softer is Gel 00 compared to 10? and what are the other different attributes?
Gel 00 is suitable for making silicone hand and face?

Questions: Do you need a release agent on the face for silicone?
How many ounces of silicone would you need for say a full head, neck , and down to the top shoulders and upper chest(a full bust)?
Thanks for any help

Good question.
1. Silicone is lighter than alginate: less distortion
2. Multiple use mold: mold may be re-used for multiple castings and a large variety of materials: i.e. hot clay, wax, resin, rubber, plaster, etc.
3. Much better detail reproduction than alginate.
Silicone lifecasting is certainly not for all lifecasting applications dut for prosthetic work it is a valuable alternative to alginate.

@joeyvader> you can try sealing it with a spray makeup sealer such as Kryolans fixer spray. You are better with a vinyl cap, though.

the lifecast you did on sonya vasquez how much did all the materials you used for that lifecasting session cost total ?

See my answer below.
brickintheyard 3 years ago
I believe this lifecast used about $60 worth of Platsil working out of a 2 gallon kit. So probably a little less than a half gallon.

assuming I understood that right, the 2gal kit costs @ $240.00USD?
