His phrasing is very moving. I think of the way Bream could transform what others just play. It is other worldly. He is a real artist. I like Russell. Is it not strange that the guitar seems so much more personal than other instruments? I think it may have something to do with the tactile nature of the strings. Both hands shape tone and volume in ways far more direct than other instrument. The only other instrument more sensitive to human influence is the guitar, perhaps. What do you think?
Listened to this for the first time tonight, and at 0.52 thought "great , at last a guitarist who doesn't slavishly imitate David Russell's horrendous downwards slur" , then at 1.26, thought, "ohmigod, he's just like all the rest".
Why, oh why, does every guitarist play that downwards slur, sticking in a gratuitous flattened 7th ? Just hit the VI straight and clean, the way Neil Gow wrote the tune, and the way every Scottish fiddler has played the tune for decades.
Naturally, after hearing David Russell play this, it's difficult to find anyone who can live up to his standard, but you truly do this piece justice. Thank you for sharing!
Your guitar sounds gorgeous, by the way. What do you play?
Wow ... Your guitar has a wonderful sound. Congratulations!!

@chopin65 Yes, I agree completely. I love this tune, and Matthew interprets it in such an expressive way. You can tell that he loves it too.
