I wouldn't necessarily call KD/MF "Black Metal". Mercyful Fate is more classic/power metal and King Diamond (band) is melodic speed/thrash.

Mercyful fate's lyrics are a lot... darker to be called a power/classic metal band, same goes for king diamond ... that's just my opinion, I might be wrong

@Manectric7 I have been a King Diamond/Mercyful Fate fan since I was a teenager and I am 35 now. And both his solo stuff and his stuff with MF are definitely Black Metal. KD/MF are definitely the bands that struck the mold for the whole "Black Metal" scene. I think you are absolutely right in your assesment of them!! =)

Look at the guitar work, Hank Shermann was the power force behind Mercyful Fate. I know that Metallica and King remained good friends for years, and years but Hank in my opinion is a far more skilled guitarist than Kirk. Kirk is blazing fast but I think kirk patterned alot of his stuff after Hank. Great video none the less. thanks for the up.

"Melissa" is the name of a skull King Diamond used to carry on stage, and also a fictional deceased witch that appears in three songs. Before the recordings of the album Melisasa, King Diamond had acquired a human skeleton that he named "Melissa". He used the femur bones to make his trademark microphone handle. The skull was apparently stolen during a show in the Netherlands.
