@GRolla101 hitting the head is one thing. as you can see the fish still took off and bent his shaft. so rookie or no rookie, if you dont hit the sweet spot on the head (or spine) stoning the fish, it doesn't really matter cuz your still gonna have a fight on your hands.
@fjeppesen Dude, I don't know why I'm even responding to this, but why does everyone seem to think that they are experts at judging the weight of a fish from underwater videos? I only weigh 140 lbs. I have more than 10 people that were at the port when I returned, and witnessed it weighed on a certified scale with plenty of pictures. This fish was half the weight of the current world record, so if I was going to lie, then it would have been the new unofficial record......
yes surfgirl24 but there are good scuba accident sites on the web too. try the myscubastory site. They have all sorts of dive stories and accident videos there. type myscubasory into google and its the first one. enjoy!
i don't think you can point the finger at any 1 person and say you're effectively affecting any species. dont care if you spear fish all day and chuck the dead corpses after you shoot em, 1 person does not make a dent in a species unless its already endangered. you want to blame someone, blame an INDUSTRY, not a person. and ANY form of fishing requires skills. great vid, bad trolls.
@noyzizi if everyone shares your outlook on it, then eventually it WILL make a big difference. I am not trolling, I just would hate to see you throwing dead fish away and pretending it doesn't matter.
@advid100 nothing goes to waste in nature, if you spear a fish and toss the body back into the sea then a bunch of smaller fish will have a meal or a larger fish with have his meal. by killing that ulua, you save hundreds of opelu from being eaten. if you let the ulua live then eventually it will be eaten by something else, probably a shark. everything dies in nature but as long as something else benefits from it its ok

@daroostaisback did you just give me a rape face lol? i'll see if i can find the video of a friend of mine shooting a ulua/travelly close to 100lbs with and small gun. he was only able to penetrate about an inch through the fishes thick skull but hit the sweet spot and stoned it (the flopper didn't even engage). now that was impossibru! i think he used a 90cm gun...if i find the link i'll send it to you.

@mattycazam2 Nothing me or my friends shoot are wasted. We live in Japan, and everything but the bones are eaten. Just because you don't like to eat them, so the whole world should stop eating them???
@toecutterx this was not at the crevasses. it was closer to Naha. I've snuck out to the rigs on several occasions over the years, but only once did I have a chance at a huge trevally. I only had a tiny gun w/ a suicide rig, so I didn't shoot. I figured best case was I would just wound him, and worst case was that he would take my gun from me....
@Umiacha70 How do you get to this site? I usually spear up north close to shore. Your video looks like it was taken near a sea wall. I got a medium size spangled emperor yesterday that was very tasty.
@mattycazam2 look at the way you attacked that man for something you don't even understand. We live in the Southern Caribbean and trevally is a lovely fish to eat, if you know how to cook it. Sometimes they pass like a freight train in pretty deep water. So from an ethical and sporting standpoint there ain't nothing wrong with shooting trevally.
@mattycazam2 shut the fuck up a go back to what ever the fuck it is you do because you obviously know jack shit about spearfishing. this guy by the look of it is a good spear fisher and you have no right to tell him otherwise
The fish that you shot in this video is called a Horse eye Jack, you're right the older they get the thicker the girth of the fish. the intermediate ones look quite large but are very light for their size. i guess this one is much older judging from it's thickness. they are not bad eating fish but the meat has a lot of gristle in between the layers and may turn off some people, the best way to eat them is to fry the meat with lots of seasoning and breadcrumbs until it's dark brown.
I've been diving, spearfishing and fishing here in Barbados for over 30yrs. we have one species here called a crab trevally and they grow to over 100lbs; the biggest I've seen landed was over 5 feet long and almost 3 feet wide and he weighed in at just over 60lbs. i don't want to seem rude but i was just comparing the two visual sizes per guess weight but I've been known to be wrong sometimes.Nice head shot though.
@breeze344 No problem. I have no experience with the Crab Trevally, but I do have pictures of this Giant Trevally on a certified scale. This species does not seem to get much longer, just thicker. They are probably the second strongest fighting fish that we get around Okinawa, the first being the Dog-tooth Tuna.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@breeze344 hope u get eaten by a great white spearfishing is gluttony and a dog act simply cheating, a fish doesnt derserve a dirty big spear through the head
Come'on i should think that everyone knows that trevally is a very light fish for it's size. judging from experience that fish only weighs around 25-35lbs; you can't fool all of us Mr. spear fisherman.
@breeze344 although your guess is off by about 20-25lbs, in your defense, we did find a half digested cuttlefish in his stomach that we did not weight, but that I guess weighed around 15lbs. If you subtract that weight, then he would have weighed closer to 60lbs.
Good video ! I love my GoPro. Check out my videos on yourtube too as I wear my Go Pro on my head for hand free filming. Also have video on vimeo titled Key West Adventure 2010.
@morgasticmorgan I don't know if they are the best in the world, but I love them more than any other fin that I have tried. I especially like the ergonomically designed foot pockets.
@jazzstar747 we have very few sharks here, and they are almost never a problem. some of the the outer islands have more problems with sharks, but not on the main island.
Omer wetsuit- $350-400 c4 fins- $400-500 Riffe Euro- $500 Riffe Shaft with slip tip- $170-200 Dive Watch-$??? Digital Camera in water housing-$??? Tag line and Floater-$??? Goggles and Snorkel-$??? Dive Knife-$?? Weight Vest-$??? Shooting a 73.5lb Ulua(GT) and getting it on film from start to finish PRICELESS....
@0Engineer about $70, but when your hunting GT, you have to be prepared to replace broken gear. They are almost as tough as Dog-tooth Tuna to land if you don't stone them.
@mx6mao88 you clicked to watch a video with the word spearfishing in its title. Why did you watched it in the first place? What did u expect shooting fish with flowers and love? damn all you fake-ecologists-trolls
@boozouz It was good. I took it to my friend's restaurant. He can make carp taste great! We had like an 8 course meal out of it, and he kept the rest for his business.
nice vid!! i still think that shooting fish takes no or very little skill. hitting em with a hawaiian sling, that's skill. still looks like a blast though
@racooninabag If it takes no skill, why do people still buy their tuna in a can...? Because things like knowing how to swim exceptionally well, breath hold diving to 60' for over a minute, knowing where the fish will be and how to get close to them, knowing about the ocean and all it's dangers like tides, currents, waves, etc... Those aren't skills....? It takes a certain kind of person to enter the food chain to get their own dinner. People like us feed the people who can't feed themselves.
awsome video those bad boys are no joke we hunt alot of those in hawaii and the record is hard to beat i think its 150lb. but i have a quick question how did you set up that break away line as far as setting up the shaft line to float line and the gun?
what type of gun u got and whats the line system u got??? i mean like sum have it where u shoot and the line is attached to a float what syatem is that???

your fins the c4's do you think they are the best in the world
or are they just allround suitable for your diving
morgasticmorgan 1 year ago
@morgasticmorgan I don't know if they are the best in the world, but I love them more than any other fin that I have tried. I especially like the ergonomically designed foot pockets.

Very good big fish , but where is the sharks
You do not have sharks in there
jazzstar747 1 year ago
@jazzstar747 we have very few sharks here, and they are almost never a problem. some of the the outer islands have more problems with sharks, but not on the main island.

bad luck about your spear man. how much did another one set you back?
0Engineer 1 year ago
@0Engineer about $70, but when your hunting GT, you have to be prepared to replace broken gear. They are almost as tough as Dog-tooth Tuna to land if you don't stone them.

@boozouz It was good. I took it to my friend's restaurant. He can make carp taste great! We had like an 8 course meal out of it, and he kept the rest for his business.

what did you do with the fish?? please answer
shadowrslayer 1 year ago
@shadowrslayer took it to my friends restaurant and had a feast.

@Umiacha70 Oh u could have given it to me, nice video mate
boozouz 1 year ago
nice vid!! i still think that shooting fish takes no or very little skill. hitting em with a hawaiian sling, that's skill. still looks like a blast though
racooninabag 1 year ago
@racooninabag If it takes no skill, why do people still buy their tuna in a can...? Because things like knowing how to swim exceptionally well, breath hold diving to 60' for over a minute, knowing where the fish will be and how to get close to them, knowing about the ocean and all it's dangers like tides, currents, waves, etc... Those aren't skills....? It takes a certain kind of person to enter the food chain to get their own dinner. People like us feed the people who can't feed themselves.

awsome video those bad boys are no joke we hunt alot of those in hawaii and the record is hard to beat i think its 150lb. but i have a quick question how did you set up that break away line as far as setting up the shaft line to float line and the gun?
bambooman36 1 year ago
what type of gun u got and whats the line system u got??? i mean like sum have it where u shoot and the line is attached to a float what syatem is that???
95090978 1 year ago
@95090978 Riffe Euro 120X. I'm using the break away system, where the shaft separates from the gun and is connected to the float.
