these 2 names shouldnt even be in the same sentence barber was a beast of a back and is now winding down. he trucked over everyone and there was a reason he was called marion the barbarian. maroney is a fagget little fucking pussy who was the biggest waste of a 1st round draft pick ever. maroney i hope you rot on the bottom of that broncos RB depth chart
Its sad to say, but those were the glory days for gopher football(in my lifetime). The only thing missing from those teams was a solid defense. A solid defense and they could have been smelling some roses. BRING BACK GLEN MASON! HAHA

AP holds #1 right now Barber isnt doing too good and maroney, I havent even heard about him this year. Tashard choice is basically replacing barber. Too bad I like both of them. Next year things will look up.
Marion "the Barber" and Lawrence "Boney" Maroney were the best rushing tandem the Golden Gophers have had in eons. Both are doing well in the NFL today.
you are correct. I feel if Belichick didn't fuck with Maroney last year, with the Pats offense....he could have been the NFL's #1 RB. Now (with the injury to Brady), I feel if Barber stays healthy, he can be the #1. Both good enough to be the #1 NFL RB though

wow laurence maroney is not as good as marion barber....marion barber is faster stronger blocks...and all of tha things u need to be a back....maroney cant touch tha barbarion
Gary Russell was good too but unfortunately, he couldn't manage to pass any classes. He has the record for TD's in a single season for the Gophers at 18.
dude, they are pretty much similiar skillz but marion has more power and maroney has more speed... they are the same. for example, marion suceeds in the NFL with his power and maroney suceeds in the NFL with his speed. maroney does have a little power and marion does have speed of course but not soo speedy as maroney and maroney is not so power as marion. get it?
Yeah, two bad these guys are gone now and we have nobody, what a rotton ass season last year. Nice jam in the backround and great clips, thanks from the old guard!
Yes, that was the greatest RUNNING-BACK TANDEM in Gophers' History. But I don't think this was the greatest Gophers' Football team. Due to Glen Mason's lazy recruiting, Minnesota was weak in some areas. If those two players had had more player support, the Gophers could very well have been a BCS Bowl team.
Brewster brought in some talent this year bringing in Gray. Even though we already have a great quarterback who was in top 20 passing and the leading rusher on the team.
Here is my opinion of ex-Gopher coach Glen Mason. As a game coach and with the Xs and Os, even if he wasn't great, he was pretty solid and was underrated. However, IMHO, the reason that Mason couldn't take Minnesota to the next level and lost huge leads was because, as a recruiter, he wasn't very good and was lazy. Since Minnesota wasn't an easy sell for talent, he assumed that very few players would consider Minnesota, so, instead of going after the best, he waited for the leftovers.
I think that, had he gone after the best and had Plans B, C, and D in place if they said no, Mason would have gotten more good players and would have taken Minnesota to an even higher level.
In addition, defense is more important than offense, and Mason didn't focus on recruiting good defensive players. So many people blame Mason's coaching for losing many big leads in games. However, IMHO, the big reason that happened was because Mason's defenses were weak and ran out of gas early.
Although Mason did a good job making Minnesota Football respectable, due mostly to his recruiting efforts, he couldn't take Minnesota to the next level-the top part of the Big Ten and great bowl games. Tim Brewster is recruiting up a storm, and, IMHO, the Gophers will get even better with him. Yes, the Gophers were weak in 2007 and finished 1-11.
However, as Brewster's gets in place and a lot of the team is composed of the great players he recruited, Minnesota will be very good. Some of the reasons for the 1-11 season were that:
1. Brewster didn't have much head coaching experience.
2. Adjusting to a new coaching system takes time.
3. Minnesota didn't have much talent at all in 2007. In fact, had Mason been coach, they probably wouldn't have done much better, and he would have gotten fired.

Wow! Tim Brewster could turn out to be one of the greatest recruiters ever! He signed a Top 20 class for 2008, and, so far for 2009, he has signed a great quarterback and two offensive linemen from Minnesota. In addition, for the Rivals 250 for 2009, the following ranked players have Minnesota on their list: 19 26 52 54 60 94 105 146 178 212 229 249 250
I hate how people automatically assume your a bandwagon fan when you say you like the Patriots.
I've been a fan of the Pats since '96, when I moved to New England. At that point, I didn't care for so much how good they did. I just showed them my support. And with three Superbowl wins in the decade, that support has paid off.
Go Pats, not for their greatness but for their community.
Too bad they were there at the same time, I mean, the rushing record is only 1443. Clearly that would have been broken if they had been there at different times. Plus, we sure as hell could use either of those guys now, even Russell.
I'm glad this highlight video is up, but at the same time it's obvious this guy is a Barber fan. I say that because he didn't even include some of Maroney's best highlighs, and this video was dominated by Barber, when in reality Maroney had more long runs in college. Really, it's kind of sad that Maroney's 93 yard TD run isn't even in this reel, as it was among the best runs I've ever witnessed.
uhh, Barber has definitely been better at the NFL level than Maroney. Not even close. The Patriots are disgusted that they drafted Maroney instead of Barber.
I'M A COWBOYS FAN, but Maroney Holds his own. I wouldn't mind having either one but Barber is a Bruiser! love him. Maroney is a great dynamic back. Plus they weren't from the same draft class.
Their pretty similar in style, though Barber has more arm power and reaction, Maroney outruns him and charges better. Theyre both on the best teams, but can't do their job because they dont run much
they would have gone to ther rose bowl in 2004. they had the talent and started out 6-0 then they played michigan and gave a 28 point comeback in the 4 quarter and michigan won and then they won 1 game out of their next 5 and they fell apart
Yeah Patriots fans aren't gonna argue who is better at this point. NE got a good look at Marion Barber in Dallas; Stiff arming Rodney Harrison like a child, slapping Asante Samuel down twice on the same play.. Not to mention that own-endzone run that was as impressive as anything Barry Sanders ever did. I thought barber was better in college too, but scouts saw that maroney was fast and figured that would translate to the NFL better. They are wrong a lot it seems
man u guys r dumbasses. they r both amazing. ok maroney was better in college cause he was faster than everybody. in the pros, marion is better cause he is a powerful back that gets 1st down on 3rd and short situations
lcgroves you have no clue what you are talking about. The seabags are in a doormat division. Mo Morris could not hold MB3's jock strap in a suitcase. GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!!!
Maroney sucks, he had a couple good runs...Barber would be better if he started, I hate the cowgirls but Barber is good, hes 10x better than J jones. Mo Morris is better than both of them...go hawks
Minnesota Football will be better than they have been in years very soon! Why? Because they are getting an on-campus outdoor stadium. With it, Minnesota will be able to recruit so much better. Why? Because how many great players would want to call the Metrodome home? It is indoors, off-campus, not owned by the school, and very glum. This makes for a lousy gameday atmosphere. Who agrees?
I am sorry but the two years these two guys played together OU played in back to back BCS championship games and had one of the most prolific offenses in the league. Especially 2003.
Repeat. OU had a better team. MN couldn't tackle, stop a good passer, or throw a completion on 3rd and 8.
However, MN did have a better offensive line. Both MN and OU '04 teams (the only time in which all 3 of these players were in college football) have 2 OL in the NFL, but I would take MN.
Also, Element, you misunderstood my initial posting. My point is that the YouTube clips of Peterson are amazing. He breaks a lot more tackles in his clips than Barber and Maroney do in this clip.
ima PATS fan and i luv maroney(no homo) and same 4 barber who is a true RB and plays every play like its his last...maroney has some stuff 2 learn as a starter but will pick it up madd quick
man it'd be nice if dual threat backs stayed productive like these two did in their college days. man i remember watchin this duo, great blend of speed and power.
The Gophers will only get better. It is Mason's recruits learning a whole new offensive and defensive scheme. There are TONS of true freshman starting on D because our seniors suck. Adam Weber is only a redshirt freshman and trust me, he will be a future stud. Eric Decker is our best reciever and he is only a sophmore. Duane Bennet looks to be another stud that is only a freshman. If Tim Brewster is as good of a recruiter as people say he is then the Gophers future looks bright.
Although Glen Mason got fired, I still think he did a phenominal job getting Minnesota's program out of the pits and making them respectable. He took them to bowl games and pulled upsets, something that Minnesota Football hadn't seen much of in years. The main thing that killed him was blowing leads in so many games. I think he is a fine coach, but he gets too conservative. Anyone agree with me?
One thing that is so impressive about what Mason did, IMHO, is that he got good players to come to Minnesota and got the hype for football up despite the fact that Minnesota plays their home games in the Metrodome. How many bluechippers would want to call the Metrodome home? It is an indoor venue, is off-campus, is not owned by the school, and is glum. This makes for a weak college gameday atmosphere. Kudos to Mason for doing so well despite this handicap!
Fortunately, Minnesota is going to be getting its own beautiful, new, on-campus stadium in 2009! This will help tremendously with recruiting and gameday atmosphere. Get ready for some great Gopher teams! Had Glen Mason had this stadium, I know he would have recruited better players, had better teams, and been to better bowls. However, he still probably would have blown leads, so I guess it was time for a coaching change. Here is the question-will Tim Brewster do better than Glen Mason?
So I was half wrong and didn't give them merit for doing it two years in a row, but doesn't that make this Gopher tandem the best pair ever? No one has ever duplicated their successes, and this isn't some pair of backs playing in a smaller D1-A conference, we're talking about Big Ten opponents here, buddy. So go ahead and hate, but at least recognize the greatness.
They were the first pair of rushers to both have 1,000 yard seasons--EVER. They were the most prolific pair because they were equal opportunity payload pushers. No other pair did so much together, so they are the best.
I am a huge Gophers fan and these two are the best running back duo that I have ever seen at the college level. Maroney is the better back IMO. He is just plain faster than Barber. They are both great though.
damn...Dillon kept getting in dillon's way last season but now Maroney can tear it all up with moss taking off som of the pressure on the running game
MARONEY!!! thats my dawg...hes better than any rookie RB...he might tie with JONES-DREW...he woulda had more more yard than addai if dillon didnt get more carries
actually they only played with each other for 2 years. barber left his junior year and maroney is one year younger and he also left his junior year too.
cadillac williams and ronnie brown= best college running back duo

If you want to see a RB do it by himself, find a clip of Adrian Peterson in college.

Oh come on, you telling me OU had worse athletes than MN? Laughable.
Elementalism 4 years ago
Yes, MN had a better offensive line with MB III and Maroney than OU had with Peterson.
Unfortunately, MN didn't have a quarterback or a defense, making them an inferior team.
puzzlemethis 4 years ago
I am sorry but the two years these two guys played together OU played in back to back BCS championship games and had one of the most prolific offenses in the league. Especially 2003.
Elementalism 4 years ago

Maroney is good and will be for a while, but Marion Barber has put together a much more impressive highlight reel thus far at the NFL level

Screw hockey. The Gophers are generating new excitement around Minnesota. New coach, new qb, and a brand new on campus stadium coming in 2009.

Anyone agree with me?
gymman1031 4 years ago

So go ahead and hate, but at least recognize the greatness.
dhanijohnson 4 years ago
They were the first pair of rushers to both have 1,000 yard seasons--EVER. They were the most prolific pair because they were equal opportunity payload pushers. No other pair did so much together, so they are the best.
dhanijohnson 4 years ago
I am a huge Gophers fan and these two are the best running back duo that I have ever seen at the college level. Maroney is the better back IMO. He is just plain faster than Barber. They are both great though.

damn...Dillon kept getting in dillon's way last season but now Maroney can tear it all up with moss taking off som of the pressure on the running game
