Yes, that was the greatest RUNNING-BACK TANDEM in Gophers' History. But I don't think this was the greatest Gophers' Football team. Due to Glen Mason's lazy recruiting, Minnesota was weak in some areas. If those two players had had more player support, the Gophers could very well have been a BCS Bowl team.

Here is my opinion of ex-Gopher coach Glen Mason. As a game coach and with the Xs and Os, even if he wasn't great, he was pretty solid and was underrated. However, IMHO, the reason that Mason couldn't take Minnesota to the next level and lost huge leads was because, as a recruiter, he wasn't very good and was lazy. Since Minnesota wasn't an easy sell for talent, he assumed that very few players would consider Minnesota, so, instead of going after the best, he waited for the leftovers.

I think that, had he gone after the best and had Plans B, C, and D in place if they said no, Mason would have gotten more good players and would have taken Minnesota to an even higher level.

In addition, defense is more important than offense, and Mason didn't focus on recruiting good defensive players. So many people blame Mason's coaching for losing many big leads in games. However, IMHO, the big reason that happened was because Mason's defenses were weak and ran out of gas early.

I'm glad this highlight video is up, but at the same time it's obvious this guy is a Barber fan. I say that because he didn't even include some of Maroney's best highlighs, and this video was dominated by Barber, when in reality Maroney had more long runs in college. Really, it's kind of sad that Maroney's 93 yard TD run isn't even in this reel, as it was among the best runs I've ever witnessed.

The Gophers will only get better. It is Mason's recruits learning a whole new offensive and defensive scheme. There are TONS of true freshman starting on D because our seniors suck. Adam Weber is only a redshirt freshman and trust me, he will be a future stud. Eric Decker is our best reciever and he is only a sophmore. Duane Bennet looks to be another stud that is only a freshman. If Tim Brewster is as good of a recruiter as people say he is then the Gophers future looks bright.

Although Glen Mason got fired, I still think he did a phenominal job getting Minnesota's program out of the pits and making them respectable. He took them to bowl games and pulled upsets, something that Minnesota Football hadn't seen much of in years. The main thing that killed him was blowing leads in so many games. I think he is a fine coach, but he gets too conservative. Anyone agree with me?

One thing that is so impressive about what Mason did, IMHO, is that he got good players to come to Minnesota and got the hype for football up despite the fact that Minnesota plays their home games in the Metrodome. How many bluechippers would want to call the Metrodome home? It is an indoor venue, is off-campus, is not owned by the school, and is glum. This makes for a weak college gameday atmosphere. Kudos to Mason for doing so well despite this handicap!
