I don't understand how Dr. Gillies went from, my understanding, an unknown young doctor to being given the entire1000 bed new hospital for facial injuries in Sidcup to direct, all within a year or so of entering into the British medical corps. Dr. Gilles went on to, at the close of his medical career, perform the first female to male and later, male to female sex re-assignment operations.
@TheWhitegold21 When I think of war, I think explosions, crawling around in the mud, seeing people get shot, and dodging gunfire all day. I wanted to join the army for a few years. But when people say it's a horrifying place, I knew it was to a certain extent, but after researching all the stuff I have, I know it's not a pretty place, and I feel stupid for even considering it. My great uncle was in the war, and I wanted to do the same. lol
@KyleSurette13 yeah I used to, and still would like to go into the Army, but I guess its kind of different. I'm glad surgery has turned around so much :) God knows what the world would be like if no one had discovered plastic surgery, antiseptics of pain killers...
@TheWhitegold21 You just have to go back to WWI to discover that world for soldiers in the field. The medics didn't carry morphine the first part of the war and many wounded still had to suffer, as the medics couldn't carry enough drugs for all the wounded. As for going to war.. it ain't pretty and there's no honor or glory, just a F'ed up world. Screw dying, it's losing limbs and getting PTSD that's every soldiers worst fear. 15-50% gets some type of PTSD.. it ain't worth it
I Think this is the first video i have EVER watched on youtube, that shows people having a civilized debate about the subject video without using vile and totally irrelevant language........... its very nice =D
Plastic surgery is not cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgeons take people who are so disfigured that they cannot appear in public without nauseating bystanders and turn them into reasonable facsimiles of healthy, uninjured people. I can't believe anyone could confuse the amount of skill required to do that with inserting breast implants.
That's not a fair statement. The vast majority of plastic surgery is still reconstructive in nature, and most cosmetic plastic surgeons still perform some if not a significant amount of reconstructive surgery. Reconstruction and cosmetics feed off of each other, and techniques learned from one advance the other -- kind of like how the defense industry has brought us a huge number of major civilian technologies (e.g., the Internet!).
I see comments about vanity surgery and I can't argue that does not happen frequently but there is much more to plastic surgery. A minor birth defect or even an unusual facial feature can cause clinically significant stress. It does have have to be a massive injury. A facial scar that a guy might not care a bit about could be devastating to a young girl. Society is judgemental, anything that brings someone back to looking "normal" is good for the patient
that is a narrow understanding of plastic surgery! people suffer facial accidents all the time that leave them ashamed to set out into public, and plastic surgery frees them from the disgusted stress of others.. it's still a fantastic development, don't let sweet-16 boob jobs turn you against it.
no its just publicized like that. my uncle just got plastic surgery cause he got a chainsaw to the face. they use it every day for strictly medical reasons like this.
@iceman5343 You're confusing plastic surgery with cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is to change a feature, like a breast enlargement or a nose job. Plastic surgery is reconstructing body parts, like reconstructing a lost nose, burned skin or whatever might have been damaged or deformed.
the face: a few square inches of skin and flesh with infinite effect on one's existance and quality of life.

Amazing stuff. Its really too bad plastic surgery became entertainment for bored house wives. Surgery should never be undergone lightly.

@ksam4000 Okay. Yeah. Plastic surgery's done a lot more than just entertain "bored house wives". Don't generalize, it makes you look stupid.
