I am doing tons of research on minneapolis because i plan on moving there within the next year but also plan on making regular trips there for many reasons and 2 special reason. Anyway so far as winter goes i obviously know i'll need a AWD SUV in order to drive during the winter. Even though it doesn't look that much worse than here upstate, NY soo anymore pointers?

Meaning people in minnesota are really nice. People in southern california always act like they want to hurt you. I'm thinking of moving back - myself.

@Superwoman2012 an AWD SUV is not necessary. A FWD car with some decent tires will do just fine as long as you're cautious. My ex's 2001 Camaro (RWD) had no problems in Minnesnowta with some all season tires.
@Superwoman2012 - I've lived in the Twin Cities since '86 & winter driving isn't all THAT bad. It's NOT necessary to have an AWD SUV, not at all. Both our cars are sedans & they do just fine w/winter driving. The key is to make sure your tires are good! Since you're coming from upstate NY, you know how to drive in snow already-you should do fine here. Allow extra travel time in poor weather, be prepared for sub-zero temps & wind chills that can get down to -40° or even lower, and dress warmly! ☺
i don't mind the cold or snow. I have even learned how to drive in snow.. my issue is with the people who tailgate that don't understand the concept of a 'safe distance'.
It seems this habit of tailgaiting started from one day to the next. I move to MN in1990, then 10 or 12 years later...poof !!. An every day occurance on the way to work..........how did this happen !!
In the summer, you wont wanna leave. Lived there for 12 years, now only go back for the summers. You may have a day or two where the humidity swells like Miam, but then it blows over.Usually in low to mid 80's during day and then hight to mid 50's at night with very little humidity. You don't rerally sweat,not really.
@strudel89 Nope, during the summer the weather is great. The sun stays up til almost 10PM in June and July. The temps are pretty decent and only a few days were you need to turn the air conditioner on. Four months of perfect weather, with 5 months of shitty weather and a few month of slush.

How come people still don't know how to drive in this? It's been snowing for , well, FOREVER. Also, studded tires ( while useless in 20 inches of slush) would greatly reduce the sliding on roads that are frozen. It's stupid that they don't allow them. Studs don't hurt the road. WINTER hurts the roads. It freezes it thaws, the road moves, cracks happen. How can they possibly not know this?
As a truck driver I've driven through plenty of these. I would say that while anyone can get stuck sometimes, the lack of common sense I see from people always amazes me. Most four wheelers will do one of two things, way too fast or way too slow. Some think that because a semi with a power divider and 80,000lbs gvw, and an expert weather driver can do 55 on that road that they can do it too. then they have that stunned look on their face when they are sitting in the ditch. they never learn.
Grew up with winters in Minneapolis, but I've been in Texas since 1969. Hope my relatives enjoy their white Christmas, but it's 86˚ here today and I like it this way.
I live in South Alabama and have only seen snow once in my life and that was last February. I would just LOVE to see snow again, I find it amazing. I guess I prefer cold because I live in a place that's hot as hell. I would love to live in Minnesota, but I at the same time I've never been in weather colder than around 19 F.

There's a reason Minnesota was peopled by Scandinavians- similar weather and in northern Minnesota, similar landscape. Granted plenty of places get comparable snow falls, but 18 in. in basically 12 hours is a good snow anywhere, especially in a metropolitan area. Couple that with temps of 0 degrees (-18 C) and 30 mph (50 kph) winds and there was some nastiness.
wow, i live in greensboro, nc and they cancelled all schools and flights for 2 straight days because of not 4 inches of snow, not 3 inches, not even 2 or 1 inch but 1/2 INCH OF SNOW!!! crazy.

I come from Greenland and live in Denmark Europe.. two very different climates.. Greenland known for being very cold is having the warmest year ever!! it's december and they got warm weather with no snow, same for Iceland.. and Countries like Denmark, that barely sees any snow in the winter is fucked up cold right now!
