We, in Australia call Coca-Cola - Coke. We never really use 'soda' (unless there's some Americans who now lives here in Australia who uses 'soda'). 'Pop' is unheard of here too. I never even knew people called it 'pop' at all.

So generally: Coca-Cola = Coke, Sprite = Sprite, Pepsi = Pepsi, etc. There are cheaper brands of cola who incorporates 'cola' into their title in various uses, but they taste yucky so I don't buy them anymore.

In all truth, coke is a brand. So if someone wanted a soda that is in the line of coke products, it would be politically correct to say that they want a coke. The drink that mose people think is a coke is the coca cola, the first word sounds were similar and looks very similar but they are indeed different, so soda, pop, and coke make since. Soda pop is just an adapatation of pop and soda. The probably later came when the people in between the north and the south combined the 2 words they heard
