  • Simplemente... SUBLIME

  • Many people have different technique, and that comes down to personal taste in sound. What is not up for debate, however, is the fact that Kraus was able to sing well, in his own unique voice, with access to his whole register including high notes, for several decades. That is only possible with healthy, consistent and SUSTAINABLE technique. Regardless of personal taste, Kraus built his instrument for the long run, and I find that in itself beautiful.

  • Checking with my crotch, this recording is one semitone above, his highest note reached a D flat. Would be a technical problem of the recorder equipment?

  • Wha.. Whatta... His voice is just PERFECT for the aria!

    Smooth and beutiful!

  • Wonderful. Jonas Kaufmann should learn.

  • Excellent voice and performance. The ranga is nice also.

  • wow!

  • guaho

  • whoever uploaded this video... well, he played it a bit faster and recorded it and uploaded it.. it is in a semitone higher than the original key.. thats why the top note was a C sharp.. well, it doesnt matter, Kraus voice is fascinating!

  • Alfredo Kraus in the early 60's! Who else ? Perfection!

    Thanks for posting

  • Goodness gracious, C sharp. That is crazy. I wonder if he actually performed it with a C sharp or if the audio was readjusted or something. Simply fantastic. Kraus is definitely my idol.

  • That was a great HIGH C.

  • Kraus is the best, like ever. Thank you Maestro for everything. I miss you...

  • esse tom está mais alto.

    Deve ser defeito da gravação...

  • GUAPÍSIMO!!! BELLÍSSSSSSIMO!!!

  • Superb, Kraus one of the greatest tenors ever

  • How can I find this movie anyway?

  • From which film this piece is?

  • really greatest...

  • che bello... che bello!!!!

  • wow this is actually a key higher than the original score

  • Lanza sung it in the same key and his recording was awarded best operatic recording 1951 and introduced in the RCA Hall of Fame.

  • His sound makes me cry.. I can only imagine what it would be like in person...just glorious.

  • Comment removed

  • maravilloso nadie puede dar criticas negativas. sencillamente perfecto¡¡¡¡

  • He sang Edgardo here with Joan S. Very perfect class act. He was a fine polished artist.

  • I heard his debut in this country in CHICAGO AND HE WAS WONDERFUL IN FAUST, TRAVIATA AND LYRIC ROLES. YEARS LATER I HEARD HIM IN FAUST AND IT WAS MUCH THE SAME. SO THIS WAS IN 1960? THIS WAS NOT A GOOD ROLE FOR HIM ON STAGE AND HE SANG IT PERHAPS IN ONE RUN, THE 3RD ACT IS A TOUGH ONE FOR LYRIC LIKE HIM ANYHOW HE WAITED TO TRY THIS ON STAGE TILL LATER--- i WOULD NOT COMPARE HIM TO LANZA-- IT'S A FOOLISH COMPARISON, VERY DIFFERENT SINGERS.

  • Yeah, Kraus actually made sound. That's the difference.

  • ****BohÈme.

This is my top 2 Che gelida manina

  • simplemente increible, exelso, bravo maestro kraus

BRAVO!!!BRAVO!!!BRAVO!!!

  • Seems to be a correct high C.

  • A very correct indeed, kraus always had it, even days before his death.

  • Nice c#! I thought that note seemed higher than it normally should. Yeah let's do it a half step higher, nice job Mr. Kraus! Maybe they sped the tape up?

  • The best version of his aria that I´ve ever listen !

  • Corelli should be no.1

  • but here we see no Pavarotti ,no Correlli, and I cannot talk or comment about,I see only great Maestro Kraus!

  • kraus,s voice is superb, the sweetness and control. much better than bjorling.

  • Just Bravoooo~!

What else could we possibly to say?

  • Comment removed

  • the no1 is right, then kraus, di stefano. gigli, and mc cormack.

  • aw, no Tucker?

  • mario all the way baby!

  • That is worst list ever! how could franco corelli be in 10th position? He was better than carreras, domingo, florez & van kesteren combined!!!

  • I must admit that Correli had better voice than most of today´s tenors.

  • This is great, so very much better than the San Juan 1994 version, don´t you think?

  • Hermoso.

  • amazing!!!!!! he has to be if not the best, second best!

  • I completely agree...

  • the best version of his aria that ive ever listen

  • Well try to hear more of them..

  • whoever says that Kraus's voice is ugly, is a retard!

  • AGREE. I want to see personally who's the person saying Kraus' voice is ugly.

    Might kill the guy myself....=p

  • @hansquad I cold not dare to say this voice is ugly, Its all down to taste, I would rather say that this voice was all art and hard work apart from all other tenors in history. Luciano was an excellent tenor but not as good as Kraus when it comes to repertory, tecnique, phisic. Not to mention Kraus did not intend to make a career on fame, money, marketing, Luciano did have an excellent publicity and that is what made him known. I do like Luciano dont get me wrong.

  • @hansquad maybe that person is envious of Kraus! if we see Him.. Lets Kill him! =) ahahahah!!!

  • What is an ugly voice, may be

    Max Lorenz ?

  • Lanza? Lanza is a very good singer (and he is not a opera singer), but Alfredo is another matter! Kraus is perhabs the best tenore leggero (high tenor?) of all times.

  • For Puccini ????? CHI SIETE is sung???? even with micro?

  • Lanzas recording is in the same key and was awarded best operatic recording 1951 in the US and introduced in the RCA Hall of Fame and is considered a reference recording today.

Anyway you cant compare Lanza and Krauss...Kraus is leggero (light lyric) and Lanza lyrico-spinto..Kraus had flawless technique and beautiful sound but Lanza possessed the voice who outshined all other tenors until today...

  • i agree with you, i love kraus after lanza he is my favorite. but 2 diffrent singers. my top 3 are lanza, kraus, di stefano. i think kraus is better than bjorling thoe, who,s voice is also light, but not as good as kraus..

  • I would not be incline to say that Lanza possessed the voice who outshined all other tenors until today. It is down to an opinion of course but when It comes to beauty, I find even the young Carreras more beaty in his voice tone. And Kraus tecnique and art cannot either be compared to Lanza´s art, they were two different artists.

  • hes simply great! and lanza was also great. so wheres the problem? perhaps there was more than one good tenor.....

  • D flat?! it's the first time I see a tenor transpose up a semitone. Execellent!

  • It's playing at a really fast speed.

  • Yes, the speed is off a bit.

  • Is this for real? I mean-is hi's singing real in this video, not just synchronising(don't know the real name for this)to the sound? Couse I think it's fantastic!

  • second only to the great lanza. superb singer..

  • Lanza ?? jajajaja yes he had a nice voice but he coudn't sing complete roles due to his lack of stamina and technique. and then drugs and "easy" life. Sorry for Lanza.

  • ilbacioditosca, be sorry for yourself not lanza. you know very little. most tenors of worth , loved lanza jussi bjorling, di stefano, pavarotti, corelli . to name afew. technique , has nothink to do with, pure voice , a gifted singer which is what lanza was, why do you think most people remember lanza? his voice , one that will never be forgotten.

  • My voice teacher know him in person and all hi ups and down, we talk about Lanza I listen to him, do you know how many beautifull voices are unknown in the world?

Opera is not for everybody and Lanza coudn't sing complete operas due to lack of TECHNIQUE AND STAMINA.

He sounded in between Corelli, Caruso etc but what?

Hollywood killed him, pervertious machine to make money.

I know stories about him that you would not believe.

  • Kraus had no ups and downs. "Second only to Lanza??" Second to no one - he was in his own class. DiStefano, Bjoerling, Del Monaco, Pavarotti, Gigli - he's within that genre, but Lanza?? You really need to revisit basic study of vocal technique, and while you're there clean the shit out of your ears you moron.

  • Pardon me, I had to return to reiterate that not only are you a moron, you're the horse manure that get's scraped off the street - and that's being more generous than you deserve you liteal waste of human space.

  • andante735you dick head pav loved lanza, so did corelli, di stefano, and bjorling. you know f..k all learn before you speak you have no style no finesse. if all prositutes had arbortions you would not be here.

  • Well if I had as much finesse as you do, I could earn a living teaching expletives. No one, including myself would really take you seriously - you've just disproved any mature lack of knowledge or singing, and you say thing that you don't know of. The simple fact that you would go as far as to suggest that my mother was a prostitute, speaks nothing of her, and points to the fact that you're a sociopath.

  • Having said that, and seriously doubting that any of the tenors you mentioned actually praised Lanza in any meaningful fashion, is yet another addition to your paranoid fantasies. The truth is that he had the sloppiest cadenza to come out of any tenor, no squillo to speak of, and the timbre of a street singer, a low class crooner and an outright counterfeit singer. To mention him in the sentence of Kraus is too disgusting for word, but I'll break that rule since you are too disgusting for words.

  • At 52 years old using language like "dick head" and calling one's mother a prostiute? Hopefully you can see the problem with that, or at least feel some semblance of shame - but I doubt it. If that's the case, it;ll free up some time for you to read the Grove's Dictionary of Music - that's if you've got the cognitive ability to take you a step higher than Cinderella.

  • andante735 you like to give it out yank but cannot take it back, ive seen your shitty remarks to others, on this site, you use the word horse shit. what does that make you? right a DICKHEAD.. a yank trying to use his brain ha ha, i thought all you yanks liked was war. or stating them then losing them. remember yank don,t try it on with me you know f..k all the only problem is you gay boy..

  • andante735twat yank or inbred , you need to engage your pea brain, before you speak . your mouth must be were your mouth is.

  • l don't understand..

  • what is it that, you do not understand?

  • next time you feel like, a bully with your mouth think. because i take no shit from anyone.your the kind who has a big mouth on here yet if i met you you would shit yourself, be a goodboy and go and play with the cars on the motorway..

  • Did you read what I wrote? The Critic is for the person who compares Lanza with Kraus. Lanza had a great voice but he never was an Opera Singer. Kraus is the only tenor who never cancel a performance, only him. Read the previous comments and you'll understand.

  • ilbacioditosca iread what you wrote, you are a fool. listen to what other tenors say. i love kraus, but not one tenor mentioned him, even callas who sang with kraus, said , lanza was the best voice, she never sang with. and what has cancancel a performance got to do with a voice? you and i are critics but the tenors who sing , thet know.

  • ilbacioditosca, thats right, you know stories thats what they are stories. read his life stories by many authors WHO KNEW LANZA, not your teacher, mant great teachers, the one who trained gigli was one who said lanza was supreme, corelli said lanza had the best voice he had ever heard. bjorling who many regard as the best ever, said his voice made me cry. di stefano said he does not know what he has. your teacher has his opinon, but i have met and read many books on lanza, yes he had problems

  • I read many books on Opera singers lifes and none of them mention Lanza as a Idol. i don't know why you are talking about Lanza when here is Kraus who sings. Lanza never had an Opera career. Kraus sung professionaly more than 45 years and no cancelation has a lot to do with a serious technique.

  • ilbacioditosca. you miss the point, read a amercian tradgey. its a book about lanza. i love kraus, but singing for45 years, might be great technique, but caruso did,t last that long nor did bjorling, what are you saying they had no technique? its about voice not technique, you listen with your ears. its about taste, if we all had the same it bwould not be right would it?

  • what are you typing about? I've watched interviews many times with Pavarotti saying he'd come home from watching a Mario Lanza Movie (while he was a teenager) & he'll look in the mirror & imitate the movements of mario Lanza! Lanza although a movie star did star in 1 or 2 opera's so stop typing out of your arse. Further Proof? Jose Carreras dedicated a song to him while he was doing a concert & sang Granada!

  • BRAVO! BRAVISSIMO!!!

  • stupid objection...Lanza had the stamina and the necessary technique...the reasons why he did not went for opera in the beginning are more sophisticated but when he died in 1959 he had a signed contract with Rome Opera House for open season in 1960...its not bad at all to inform yourself properly before talking crap...

  • its really a c#.. original was c but kraus transposed it to hi c# for unknown reason..

  • Comment removed

  • unfourtunately best recordings of kraus are made for movies

  • very good.

Precioso...

  • he did this a 1/2 step up. it's not a C..it's a C#. he's the greatest

  • WOW. only other i've heard do this was Mario Lanza... AMAZING!

  • de puro chulo que es uno...

  • I think this has something to do with the audio, he didn't really sing the C#. Not saying it's not great though...I absolutely love Kraus.

  • Aragall does it too ... I love them both!

  • Tan bella aria, tan bien interpretada y tan mala película.

  • One of the best High C's. Amazing rendition.

  • Fantastic!!!

Siempre he querido encontrar esta pelicula!!!!!
