  • God, this is awesome.

  • my fav dylan song

  • this is my favorite version by far. just heartbreaking. dylan just has (had?) the touch

  • Why did he always write songs about woman? God damn, I like his songs that don't have to do with woman better. Woman aren't worth writing about, (most of the time) P.S I'm a woman.

    My opinion. Unpopular too probably.

  • @synysterjazmyngates Dylan wrote songs about everything under the sun, and actually this is about a child I heard

  • @bobbydylanio I know he did. Well, I hope it's about a child and not another woman. Thanks.

  • The only people who covered Bob Dylan right are Nick Drake and Jimi Hendrix.

    That's my opinion.

  • Where can I find this version of the song? I downloaded the Bootleg Series version and its really rough and sounds nothing like this.

  • just unbeleviable

  • This is a song for the youth.

  • absoloutely

  • Robert Shelton's Book 'No Direction Home' quotes Bobby Neuwirth as saying that Dylan wrote this song for Nico..."Only for Nico man"

  • Judy Collins recorded this quite a while before Nico did (according to Nico, the VU wouldn't let her do it with them). It seems that Bob told several women that it had been written it for them :). Judy's version provided the basis for Fairport Convention's 1968 cover.

  • Is that right? I thought Fairport got their Dylan hidden gems from their producer, Joe Boyd.

  • Well, I don't know if it was Joe or the group that found the song, but their arrangement was clearly derived from Judy's version.

  • i love this song so very muchv :D

  • jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez i cant stand on my kneeeeeeeeeeeeeeez!

  • dont really care about or have heard of nico until this video.

but i love this song so much haha

  • aww, for Nico :)

she was a lucky woman and he was a great man x

  • What can you say?? I have this so loud when im drivin!! Very cleverly composed and just a beautiful, beautiful, wonderful, fantastic song!!!! Dylan your from a different planet, sir!

  • what album is this on? I can't believe how great it is!

  • This recording was from the Bringing All Back Home sessions in January 65 and it was initially unreleased. It was later released on The Bootleg Series Volume 1 (1991) and then later on the I'm Not There Soundtrack (2007).

  • this version was released on Biograph, 1985,

there's a much different version on bootleg series volume 2 (not 1, but 1-3 were in the same set I guess)

  • I like the alternative take on the Bootleg Series better.

  • this really is a moving recording- incredibly simple, goes to show that it's the feeling inside that counts

  • What's the opening picture of the video? That one's really really cool.

  • I totally agree. Very artsy y'know.

  • One of my favourite!

  • I wish I could find the Nico version on youtube :[

  • haunting

  • One of the best Dylan songs ever.

  • agree. what do you think of " nobody cept you"

  • great song as well.

  • Love his vocals on this song.

  • my son keep this song in his head to carry him through navy boatcamp, what a gem to visit during troubling times

  • lalala

  • Tryptomine compliments this video I discovered :)

  • Nico's cover is also great

  • whats he gona' keep with his lol?

  • He's telling this woman to give him her heart and he'll keep it safe with his.

  • ear candy

  • favorite Dylan song :)

  • Dylan threw away songs that would be any other artist's masterpieces. Unbelievable how many of these gems are out there.

  • Love this song

  • nothing beats this version.

  • While I always prefer the original..Fairport does a great fuckin' version. They always did the hidden gems

  • I just recently discovered this Dylan song, and I regard it as a lost treasure. What an amazing song!

  • i just realized that doesnt mean that it was about nico

  • as far as i know, *i'll keep it with mine" was written for judy collins, who recorded it circa 1964.

it was never released on an official album, but you can find it on a sampler celebrating her then-record company elektra.

  • nope im pretty sure it was written for nico

  • in her autobiography or the liner notes to her dylan-only project "just like a woman", she claims that the song was written for her or with her in mind, i don*t remember it exactly.

  • can anyone please please please tell me were i can get the sheet music for this song????

  • Love this song it bounces around inside my soul urging my on towards ... something.

  • i dont know about nico's cover, but Mobius Band's cover is GREAT... more of a reworking than a cover, which is probably what makes it better. check it out, it's very tasteful. you can get it for free on their site i think.

  • This song is similar to a certain Nick Drake song--"Time Has Told Me" --for one reason:

people try to do cover versions of them despite the fact that no one gets the tune right.

  • sorry nico but bob just makes the song come alive and every word mean something different each time, love your voice and everything but its a bob dylan song

  • The version from the bootleg series vol. 2 I like a little more than this one. It's sloppier, at one point the engineer cuts in on the track and says "what you were doing," which is kind of funny, but that version is just a little bit more captivating. This one's still great, though.

  • wow..i heard another version that sunded like a practice/demo..not nearly as good (prob from Bootleg)..it was NOT this one!..and so i never knew that Bob recorded a version i would fall in love with. Thank you so much for posting this!!

  • Does anyone know what INSTRUMENT this is, that does the chords?????

  • the piano

  • piano?

  • yes please. kinda got by ear but im missing something.

  • Beautiful song. It is really hard to find. I first heard it on the film "I'm Not There" and fell in love with it. It's so much better than Nico's version! Bob Dylan is amazing!

  • bobbysocks.......it is on Biography.......itunes is one place to get it that is easy

  • Incredibly moving song that really shows off the vocal range Dylan possessed that most overlooked/didn't see (starts off in a fairly low/baritone fashion than carries into a mid-register/tenor-ish). This can be found on Dylan's box-set called "Biograph" and it talks about how it was made in 1965, for Judy Collins (who sang it too), and on same night he did "All I Really Want To Do" and "My Back Pages". Simply marvelous! He plays the piano well, moving lyrics, definitely a longtime fav of mine.

  • Just wanted to correct that i believe he wrote this particular song for Nico, at least that goes by a lot of bios i've read about Nico.

  • You could be right. I am just going by the information (liner notes) that I read in "Biograph". However, there have been some references suggesting it was intended for Nico, and/or may have been written for Joan Baez as well. LOL, guess it depends on which source (or story) you wanna believe. Best wishes!

  • hahahahha Courtney Love is attempting to cover this song. Jesus, she's a loser. She'll never be able to pull it off.

  • You have to ehar this with the beautiful german/english accent of Nico (it is arround here also).

This is good too but that Nico version is all magic!!!

  • I love this song...

  • I love this song but if you haven't heard the Bootleg Vol 2 version. That's superior. It's a little slower and it makes a big difference.

But this is still 5 stars right here.

He's a big influence on my songs.

    Great images.

  • ^^^^^^^^^^^^

    Absolutely!

The version on Bootleg 2 is brilliant, its a shame it was never produced with a full band backing. Still a great song though!

  • full band backing would have ruined it!

  • the bootleg vol. 2 version is by far the most heartful dylan vocal i've heard...does anybody know of a 'cleaned - up ' version of that performance?

  • I doubt there is one.

  • buy biograph, its on that, and you can buy it anywhere

  • thanks for uploading.

  • Oh my God I have never heard this version does anyone know how to get it?

  • Great song sadly almost unknown. Look for version by Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny singing

  • Probably the best song Dylan ever made

  • beautiful song.

  • oh yes it is
