Love Genesis since the early 1970's, but I'm disappointed from an artistic standpoint that they didn't feel it was necessary to hire backup vocalists (at minimal expense for a production this large) to sing the harmonies on the recordings. They could've gotten a bassist & 2nd keyboardist who could sing. Also disappointed that they have to lower the keys on songs nowadays (a full step usually) to help Phil sing them, but I'll probably be there someday myself & I understand & can live with that.
That goofy little bald Brit fucker and his fantastic voice just brings one hit after another...and after another no less. It's all so good and so on-time.
@saffi01 I second that he's a goofy little bald Brit fucker...and I'm glad he took over when Peter left the band. No offense to the original line, and it may not make sense, but Phils voice always sounded better to me on the Genesis tracks than Peters. Not to say Peter didn't do well solo, he did, but "on Broadway," for example, is much, much better with Phil, and the overall music they made after Peter left is beyond comparison. The crowd responds better to Phil too, he's family in a way...
All those people may not know each other, like each other or even hate each other but they all have one thing in common they all have the love and respect for genesis and their amazing music.

The only singer who gives his paying fans a time to join in with his songs. What can we say? He may not be the best singer in the world but so long as he cares about us then give him respect please.
Oh and he's not bad at drumming and keyboards and writing music and lyrics.
Phil you are something special! Thanks poster this is a lovely vid :-)
Phil's voice is just as beautiful and powerful if not more so as it has always been!!! I hope he continues to make music for the world even in his retirement!
i went to the cinema showing. which was still amazing lol. i got the best of both worlds. the warmth of a cinema and i still got the atmosphere of a crowd admitadly not as great but it was also alot cheaper lol.
When Genesis came to Buffalo NY last Sept. they had so much more intensity then in these songs that they played overseas... i've seen Genesis over 25 times and this past tour was one of the best from Phil!!!!!!!!

Extremely dissapointing. These guys are much better than this video displays. Somebody give them some coffee or something. Could they not have afforded some background vocalists to provide some much-needed harmonies? I can't believe how crappy this is...they are capable of much better.
The only thing I read out of this is that you apparently don't differ between Phil Collins solo and the band Genesis, the only background singers they ever had were the musicians, Phil used to sing background for Peter. It's also a bit beyond my understanding how you can rate the band's overall strength by a song from their pop-oriented days which basically caught up Phil's voice between Mama/Ripples and Domino, all voice-and instrument challenging sonds.
I also think this particular recording/video sounds bad. Granted they're not going to sound like they did when they recorded it 22+ years ago... but the transposition downward in key to accommodate Phil just detracts from it.
As far as the harmonies that are missing here, I believe Phil sang the harmony part over the melody in the original, so it's all his voice. But I think silversong is saying it would be nice if they had someone fill in the harmony part anyway.
that Phil jobs when he sings live he like to get audience participating you should see him when he sings Take me home at the end he really gets audience participating with the song
Exactly what Squonk337 is saying: vocals and guitar just aren't good enough. Rutherford's untight, and Phil's voice sounds forced and less engaged. It may be do to lacking post-production - but does that make it any better?
The second Düsseldorf show unfortunately was one of the "weakest" of the tour, trust me, there were much better shows they could have used for the cinemas, like Manchester or Linz.
The audience in Düsseldorf was not the best either though on both days, nothing what Phil used to call "a true Genesis audience".
They decreased the tempo for certain pieces with intention to allow Phil's voice a break, pieces like "No Son Of Mine", "In The Cage" and "Mama" as well as the outstanding performance of "Ripples" quite took their toll on it, if they had played everything at full force Phil would have quickly lost his voice. Don't forget he's close to 60 by now. :)
Phil didn't make use of his 'rough edge' on In The Cage or Mama either; only on No Son did he sing with a rough edge. The lack of rough edge on songs that really require them, like In The Cage, Home By The Sea, Mama and Domino give them a bit of a 'heartless' feeling- a lack of emotion. We all know Phil is older now and that his voice has changed; however I think he still could sing with a bit more emotion in his voice. He just sounds downright unenthusiastic.
I'm not sure if we're talking about the same band and same tour here, but as owner of several encore CDs from the tour I can assure you he did sing quite a few rough edges here.
But do you think he should short change the next audience he plays to? Im sure if it was a one off performance he would let loose but when you are on a world tour, you cant risk one dodgey performance for people who are willing to pay alot of money to see you :)
I'm losing my mind...he is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO AWESOME #ILUVMESOMEPHILCOLLINS
