if you're referring to him playing acoustic guitar, there is a light sensor in the near the sound hole and whenever he strums the guitar, you don't hear the sound of the actual guitar, but a sample of the guitar part triggered by the motion of his hand passing over that area of the instrument.

a sample of a guitar recorded in the studio beats the 'sound' of a live one and is more consistent.

This isn't true. If you watch UFO's at the zoo you can see him totally off sync. There's no light sensor. If there was it wouldn't be playing sound when he's not strumming, which happens in the DVD. I don't know why he doesn't play sometimes. He can play guitar, just chooses not to. I still love Wayne.
