@fitnesspoint2006 True for example, i believe both the S Class and BMW 7 series have nothing on the Audi A8..The Audi is just MAD..don't even know where to begin with..But these other cars are still preferred by many that can afford it...for me..its the Audi A8
Notice the video review for the Jaguar XJ and BMW 7-Series compares the respective flagships to competitors...the S-Class doesn't, shouldn't, and never will need to compare to help boost it's prestige.
My mother has a 2012 S65 AMG. She had it customized. I love her car and would want it but instead mommy bought me my favorite car my own customized Range Rover Autobiography I may only be 13 but when I'm 16 and get to drive out of Voorhees anytime I want, Philly, NY, D.C and Boston better watch out because my range rover is gonna tear up those city streets.
yeah...my mom has this car, it's fucking amazing!!! such a smoothe ride, nice and spacious inside, beautiful technology...my grandpa has it as well and he takes me driving in it...its AWESOME!!! I LOVE THIS CARRRRRR
Why does he refer to the s550 as the base? It is technically the base but for 90k it makes up probably 90%+ of sales and the s65 costs 2x as much for basically a bigger engine that you will never need!! Plus no one buys an s for racing around the hills. They buy them for luxury, safety, innovation, and exclusivity. He needs to research the target audience before he attempts to review...
Benz is a boring car for me, it is like the Nokia phones; they all look the same and everyone's got one. I don't feel unique in a Benz and I definitely don't feel pampered in one either.
@chuntohk XJ does get better mileage, but you can't say it's better necessarily because of that. MPG is a concern for someone buying this second hand, but not to those buying these cars new. XJ is cheap used, and reliable. S-class costs a LOT more used. I would have the S-class AND XJ.
I did not say that the XJ is better. No car is perfect. But, an environmentally responsible driver would pick a car that is as fuel efficient as possible. And to the people who say that my previous comment was a poor comment, I would like to say that buying a luxury car is okay. However, with environmentally friendliness in mind. Although the figures were exaggerated, we still need to tackle the issue of global warming. Try enjoy your car when the world becomes uninhabitable...
You have an argument, but in reality, it would be better to have a diesel car, but the EPA doesn't think lower hydrocarbons and a clean system with the ease of using biodiesel should be allowed, sadly. If one really cares about the environment, they would get a diesel luxury sedan and run it on biodiesel. But the German TUV rated that S550 as being more environmentally friendly than the Prius. S-class may burn more fuel, but how much gas it uses does not tell the full story of its cleanliness.
Time will tell whether the S-Class is clean or not. Also, I agree that diesel cars are cleaner. But I think the older generation diesel cars (80s and 90s) have ruined the reputation of diesel cars. Living in Hong Kong, even though I am for diesel cars, I hate when those poorly maintained vans give out black smoke and loud noise. Maybe it is because of the old diesel cars that made the authorities in some places avoid diesel cars.
The S-class is a very ethically made car. But diesels definitely ruined the reputation in the 1980s. Diesel is a terrible smell, and even worse to get on your hands. I know this quite well...
@stevomwa obviously. so what, you think biggest hp wins the race? BMW driving dynamics are far superior. check any video of these 2 cars being compared.
from what I see you are obviously an ignorant bmw fan arguing without reason.. listen up.. the bmw dynamics control the efficiency and stability of the car.. you can put all those packages in bmw but Mercedes are known for there over engineered vehicles and that technology is already preset in 1950's models...
S-Class w/ night vision is gangsta. Can only imagine old man or hitman driving this beast. would be nice to have, but not really for me. iono i just like Audi more, prolly cuz i can't get a benz, aha >.>
by the way, maybe someone knows... why is the steering wheel in a merc not straight. the column does not come out straight of the dashboard. especially on s and sl´s. you actually have to sit at an annoying angle to have the steering wheel straight in front of you like it is in audis and vw´s. noone could tell me til now.
Standard features include air conditioning w/dual-zone climate controls, interior air filter, navigation system w/voice recognition, power tilt/telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel w/radio controls, cruise control, leather upholstery, heated 14-way power front seats, memory system, power sunroof, premium sound system, 6-disc CD changer, power rear sunshade, and universal garage door opener.
yes, and you can get the distronic system which is able to detect any obstacle in its path and will automatically reduce speed itself and apply the brakes. i know cause i have a w221 2007 s320 and a 2008 s500 w221. check out my review
Woah woah woah. I never said cruise control was not standard in the S-Class. However, I find it strange that Distronic is not standard in a $90,000 car. The DTS at $54,000 has massaging seats, while it is only an option in the $90,000 S550. Poor engineering. Well no. Not poor engineering, but a slightly disappointing list of standard features looking at the newspapered $90,000 price tag. Throwing bottles in the garbage is like taking an S550 over a BMW M5.
As I said earlier, the S-Class is newspapered. People just like it (or pretend to like it) cause it's a "Mercedes" and cause "Mercedes are cool" and essentially just for the name. There are better buys and better alternatives to the S-Class. The Audi A8 is nearly as sporty as the S-Class, just as luxurious, almost as powerful, and more fuel-efficient, and it sells for $12,000-$14,000 less. Cadillac DTS - Massage at $53,000. What else goes into a luxury cars besides amenities (and ride quality)?
You have to drive the competition to understand. The Audi's ride is not as good, and the Mercedes' interior is truthfully almost flawless in quality of materials and assembly. It's a showcase of technology that's actually fun to drive. None of the competition is engineered the same way either.
The DTS is a joke compared to any of these cars, even the Hyundai Genesis.
Ok, you win with the S-Class. Your comment inspires me to give more credit to it.
But you're wrong about the DTS. It has more power, is more fuel-efficient, is more stylish, and is sportier than the Lincoln Town Car, it has a ton of standard features, and it has a reasonable price tag.
Name two REALLY GOOD reasons why the DTS is "a dinosaur that needs to be taken back and shot". How is it such a bad car? The really bad car is the Lincoln Town Car. It's an expensive, weak-ass waste of money. At least the DTS is for subjective people who like comfort, standard amenities, and style. You'd buy the DTS for the same reason you'd buy an Aston Martin.
It's not much larger than a LWB S-Class, Equus, or LS on the inside, yet it's noticably larger outside. Poor packaging by today's standards was just fine when its dated G-Body platform was new long ago. It's V-8 has less power and worse efficiency than multiple GM V-6s. It has a 4-speed when economy cars are beginning to get six. It's interior is not 45-50K nice in material quality. I can go on.
Its interior is $45-50k nice in standard amenities. It has seat massage at $52,000!! Does the $90,000 S-Class have standard massage? No! And of course a V8 gets worse efficiency than a V6. The Town Car and S-Class both get even worse mileage than the DTS.
Again, amenities in S-Class prices is missing the point. They're about much more than that. MATERIAL quality is far inferior to others for its price. Like the Escalade, it lacks things it should have. There's no modern transmission, just an old four speed. There's not fully tilt-telescopic steering wheel, etc. It doesn't have a heated and cooled cupholder like a 25K Sebing (if you want to talk value). Match it up against a Genesis 4.6 and the Cadillac is shamed, even in price.
Match it up against a GL450 and the GL450 is shamed. Here are the standard features in the Escalade that are not standard in the GL450: 68 horsepower, 1.5 liters, heated 2nd-row seats, power liftgate, memory system, 14-way seats, tri-zone climate controls, and cooled front seats. The GL450 is also slower to 60mph by 0.4 seconds.
A DVD entertainment system costs $1300 in the Escalade; $2650 in the GL450. A DVD entertainment system is standard in the Escalade Platinum, but not in the GL550.
You just don't get it. You're really, really good at looking at sheets to decide what the best car is, which apparantly is whoever can shove the most features in a car for a given price.
That's what most people look for in a car - amenities. I want a car with lots of amenities, and that's what Cadillac excels in. The Escalade has all the luxury and power in the world. There's no reason to buy the GL450 over the Escalade. You just don't get it.
I repeat: YOU don't get it. At the 70-90K mark, you HAVE the money for 500 dollar this and that 4,000 dollar package. The average S-Class buyer, for instance, lays out 15 grand in options alone.
Considering Mercedes is doing fairly well and Cadillac, aside from the CTS, is not, that suggests you're wrong. People at this price want to feel like they have a truly luxurious car, and the fact that the S-Class handily outsells the better equipped, much cheaper Lexus LS is PROOF of that.
Don't assume that if Car A outsells car B, then Car A is more luxurious. Since Car B is better equipped (by the way the standard S550 is better equipped than the LS460 - no standard navi system, no 14-way power front seats, no standard voice recognition), it must also be more luxurious. And that says that both cars have standard leather upholstery, which they do. Now, if the S-Class had standard leather upholstery while the LS460 didn't, then that'd be a different story.
I'm not assuming, it's true, at least in this sense. But that's very telling as it's known as being more luxurious than any of its competitors, and it handily outsells them.
People aren't as interested in "value" at this elevated price level. It's just true, and as I said, they lay out enough money in options on average to buy a second car.
So why would people S550 if they'ren ot getting their money's worth? Wouldn't they rather have an Audi A8, BMW M5, Lexus LS460, Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac CTS-V, Mercedes-Benz C63, Honda Civic, or some other car whose price is proportional to its interior, engine, handling, and ride quality?
No, and that's the point. When you're in the price category of an S-Class, not having Option X isn't at all an issue. That can be fixed by checking the option box. People don't buy any of those kinds of cars for value, they buy them instead of the S-Class, statistically, because they simply couldn't afford the price of admission for the MB.
Those people are not concerned with little standard features if it's an option.
Do people want the MB for the badge? For the "Mercedes"? For the ride quality? For the relaxing and quiet interior? Cause if they just want it for the badge, then that's gay. But if they want a high-quality car, that is, high ride quality, good handling, style, and a relaxing and quiet interior, then I think it's fine to forget value.
hmmn, all i know is shitty cheap cars can have all the tech and bs they want.even more than luxury cars...but its the engineering.fail.lol."oh but cadillac has dis tech and dat" well,if one of those breaks bye bye.aaand, american car.sad.lol.
Audi A8 and BMW 7-series are the drivers' cars, Lexus LS is the ultimate in comfort/quality, Jaguar XJ reeks of taste and class, but the Mercedes S-class does an unbelievable job of giving you all of the above!
Too bad there is no Infiniti Q45 anymore though :(. I wish Cadillac and Lincoln would build something in this ultra luxury/tech category!
This is a car review, not a medium for the study of language. Seeing that you are a hundred years old, however, I thought if you had the money, you should fully build in a grandfather clock as a custom option. I'd say this is a beautiful car as it is.
excuse me "young'n", but you were the one felt the need to give your input on what i said, and I corrected you. you were the one who used this as a medium to police other people's comments, and evaluate intelligence thereafter. my age doesn't matter, but in all likelihood, i'm younger than you are...
all that to say, "I disagree, I do not like that old grandfather clock".
love this car, still think the ass sucks, but...overall it's still my favorite sedan. ultra pricy, but it's not designed for people who scrap together some change to get it. "if you got it, flaunt it" all the way.
Standard features - Air conditioning w/dual-zone automatic climate controls, interior air filter, Tele Aid assistance system, navigation system w/voice recognition, power tilt/telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel w/radio controls, cruise control, leather upholstery, heated 14-way power front seats w/lumbar adjustment, memory system, heated power mirrors w/driver-side automatic day/night, power sunroof, 6-disc CD changer, satellite radio, power rear sunshade, universal garage door opener.
1. There is no such vehicle as the Mercedes-Benz S300. As of 2009, US trims include the S550, S63 AMG, S600, and S65 AMG. The S63 AMG, S600, and S65 AMG trims have standard seat massage, but the least expensive S63 starts at about $135,000. The S600 and S65 AMG have seat massage, but both of those cars are over $150,000. I assume that you could buy night vision and seat massage as options, probably about $3000 for the seat massage and $1000 for the night vision, but I'm not sure.
On my s class the night vision doesn't work its a gimmic its cool to show off though. and of course I have seat massage. but then again this is not very usful 2 you becuase i don't own a s300
people who buy it are likely to be civilized driver on the road and will not need that much power the 5.5LV8 is good enough on the street unless you are going to race in it. Most cars on the road are not v8!
i'm with u men. awful headlights, bmw 7 looks better from the front and deserves to be more expenive. mercedes is my no 1 car but this car disappoints me.

yes, and you can get the distronic system which is able to detect any obstacle in its path and will automatically reduce speed itself and apply the brakes. i know cause i have a w221 2007 s320 and a 2008 s500 w221. check out my review
sachakishlar 2 years ago
I own this car in Silver.
Cruise control is standard, but distronic plus (which allows the car to stop itself if traffic does and then start again) is a$1500 option.
I love it, but its only really good for highways. In city streets you shouldn't use it.
whitecollarcriminal 2 years ago 2
no. cruise control is standard in the $15,000 honda civic but NOT in the $90,000 super luxury s-class. it is DEFINITELY not a standard feature.
what the hell is wrong with you? cruise control is OBVIOUSLY standard in this kinda car...
youmils03 2 years ago
Woah woah woah. Cruise control is standard. LASER cruise control, Distronic, is optional.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
Woah woah woah. I never said cruise control was not standard in the S-Class. However, I find it strange that Distronic is not standard in a $90,000 car. The DTS at $54,000 has massaging seats, while it is only an option in the $90,000 S550. Poor engineering. Well no. Not poor engineering, but a slightly disappointing list of standard features looking at the newspapered $90,000 price tag. Throwing bottles in the garbage is like taking an S550 over a BMW M5.
youmils03 2 years ago
Features has nothing to do with engineering. And again, these are cars that do not have to stand on their standard features list to sell.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
As I said earlier, the S-Class is newspapered. People just like it (or pretend to like it) cause it's a "Mercedes" and cause "Mercedes are cool" and essentially just for the name. There are better buys and better alternatives to the S-Class. The Audi A8 is nearly as sporty as the S-Class, just as luxurious, almost as powerful, and more fuel-efficient, and it sells for $12,000-$14,000 less. Cadillac DTS - Massage at $53,000. What else goes into a luxury cars besides amenities (and ride quality)?
youmils03 2 years ago
You have to drive the competition to understand. The Audi's ride is not as good, and the Mercedes' interior is truthfully almost flawless in quality of materials and assembly. It's a showcase of technology that's actually fun to drive. None of the competition is engineered the same way either.
The DTS is a joke compared to any of these cars, even the Hyundai Genesis.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
Ok, you win with the S-Class. Your comment inspires me to give more credit to it.
But you're wrong about the DTS. It has more power, is more fuel-efficient, is more stylish, and is sportier than the Lincoln Town Car, it has a ton of standard features, and it has a reasonable price tag.
youmils03 2 years ago
It's miles ahead of the Townie, but both are dinosaurs that need to be taken back and shot.
They need real flagships. They ought to bring the Continental back, but they'd call it that MK_ bull shit.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
Name two REALLY GOOD reasons why the DTS is "a dinosaur that needs to be taken back and shot". How is it such a bad car? The really bad car is the Lincoln Town Car. It's an expensive, weak-ass waste of money. At least the DTS is for subjective people who like comfort, standard amenities, and style. You'd buy the DTS for the same reason you'd buy an Aston Martin.
youmils03 2 years ago
It's not much larger than a LWB S-Class, Equus, or LS on the inside, yet it's noticably larger outside. Poor packaging by today's standards was just fine when its dated G-Body platform was new long ago. It's V-8 has less power and worse efficiency than multiple GM V-6s. It has a 4-speed when economy cars are beginning to get six. It's interior is not 45-50K nice in material quality. I can go on.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
Its interior is $45-50k nice in standard amenities. It has seat massage at $52,000!! Does the $90,000 S-Class have standard massage? No! And of course a V8 gets worse efficiency than a V6. The Town Car and S-Class both get even worse mileage than the DTS.
youmils03 2 years ago
Again, amenities in S-Class prices is missing the point. They're about much more than that. MATERIAL quality is far inferior to others for its price. Like the Escalade, it lacks things it should have. There's no modern transmission, just an old four speed. There's not fully tilt-telescopic steering wheel, etc. It doesn't have a heated and cooled cupholder like a 25K Sebing (if you want to talk value). Match it up against a Genesis 4.6 and the Cadillac is shamed, even in price.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
Some V-8s with modern tech are V-6-economic. The Genesis 4.6 gets mileage similar to a 2009 TL, for example.
The S550 is also MUCH more powerful. It averages 17-18, not much worse than the nearly 100 hp less powerful Cadillac.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
Match it up against a GL450 and the GL450 is shamed. Here are the standard features in the Escalade that are not standard in the GL450: 68 horsepower, 1.5 liters, heated 2nd-row seats, power liftgate, memory system, 14-way seats, tri-zone climate controls, and cooled front seats. The GL450 is also slower to 60mph by 0.4 seconds.
A DVD entertainment system costs $1300 in the Escalade; $2650 in the GL450. A DVD entertainment system is standard in the Escalade Platinum, but not in the GL550.
youmils03 2 years ago
You just don't get it. You're really, really good at looking at sheets to decide what the best car is, which apparantly is whoever can shove the most features in a car for a given price.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago 3
That's what most people look for in a car - amenities. I want a car with lots of amenities, and that's what Cadillac excels in. The Escalade has all the luxury and power in the world. There's no reason to buy the GL450 over the Escalade. You just don't get it.
youmils03 2 years ago
I repeat: YOU don't get it. At the 70-90K mark, you HAVE the money for 500 dollar this and that 4,000 dollar package. The average S-Class buyer, for instance, lays out 15 grand in options alone.
Considering Mercedes is doing fairly well and Cadillac, aside from the CTS, is not, that suggests you're wrong. People at this price want to feel like they have a truly luxurious car, and the fact that the S-Class handily outsells the better equipped, much cheaper Lexus LS is PROOF of that.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
Don't assume that if Car A outsells car B, then Car A is more luxurious. Since Car B is better equipped (by the way the standard S550 is better equipped than the LS460 - no standard navi system, no 14-way power front seats, no standard voice recognition), it must also be more luxurious. And that says that both cars have standard leather upholstery, which they do. Now, if the S-Class had standard leather upholstery while the LS460 didn't, then that'd be a different story.
youmils03 2 years ago
I'm not assuming, it's true, at least in this sense. But that's very telling as it's known as being more luxurious than any of its competitors, and it handily outsells them.
People aren't as interested in "value" at this elevated price level. It's just true, and as I said, they lay out enough money in options on average to buy a second car.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
So why would people S550 if they'ren ot getting their money's worth? Wouldn't they rather have an Audi A8, BMW M5, Lexus LS460, Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac CTS-V, Mercedes-Benz C63, Honda Civic, or some other car whose price is proportional to its interior, engine, handling, and ride quality?
youmils03 2 years ago
No, and that's the point. When you're in the price category of an S-Class, not having Option X isn't at all an issue. That can be fixed by checking the option box. People don't buy any of those kinds of cars for value, they buy them instead of the S-Class, statistically, because they simply couldn't afford the price of admission for the MB.
Those people are not concerned with little standard features if it's an option.
TheNewMrCool 2 years ago
Do people want the MB for the badge? For the "Mercedes"? For the ride quality? For the relaxing and quiet interior? Cause if they just want it for the badge, then that's gay. But if they want a high-quality car, that is, high ride quality, good handling, style, and a relaxing and quiet interior, then I think it's fine to forget value.
youmils03 2 years ago 2
u're right ! when u buy Mercedes or BMW,dont care bout da value, coz these kind of cars have great ride quality, smooth n quiet engine.

A8 is nice too
javi7148 2 years ago
Audi A8 and BMW 7-series are the drivers' cars, Lexus LS is the ultimate in comfort/quality, Jaguar XJ reeks of taste and class, but the Mercedes S-class does an unbelievable job of giving you all of the above!
Too bad there is no Infiniti Q45 anymore though :(. I wish Cadillac and Lincoln would build something in this ultra luxury/tech category!

They wouldn't last just like Q45

the audi a8 w12 kicks the mercedes s600's ass.
youmils03 2 years ago
LOL That's hilarious.
The S600 is faster than a Murcielago in the 1/4 mile.
whitecollarcriminal 2 years ago 3
but not in the 0-60mph
S600 0-60mph: 4.4 seconds
Murcielago 0-60mph: 3.8 seconds

the fuel economy sucks! that's this car's major draw back. and what's the deal with that old grandfather clock in the middle of the dash! come on!
i can't wait to see the 550 blue tec hybrid though. i bet it's going to cost a grip...but performance wise it's supposed to be a huge step up.
antiignorant 3 years ago
Wow. You are preeeeeetty dumb.. Do you know what a grandfather clock is?

Wow. You are preeeeety dumb. do you know what exaggeration is? or semantics? or colloquialism?
antiignorant 2 years ago
This is a car review, not a medium for the study of language. Seeing that you are a hundred years old, however, I thought if you had the money, you should fully build in a grandfather clock as a custom option. I'd say this is a beautiful car as it is.
oskeisa 2 years ago
excuse me "young'n", but you were the one felt the need to give your input on what i said, and I corrected you. you were the one who used this as a medium to police other people's comments, and evaluate intelligence thereafter. my age doesn't matter, but in all likelihood, i'm younger than you are...
all that to say, "I disagree, I do not like that old grandfather clock".
how bout you stop sizing people up over the net?

buy previous s class for only 14-31k its good.

love this car, still think the ass sucks, but...overall it's still my favorite sedan. ultra pricy, but it's not designed for people who scrap together some change to get it. "if you got it, flaunt it" all the way.

planning to buy an s300 here....does it have night vision n seat massage ?
KPKonliner 3 years ago
A few things:
I assume that you could buy night vision and seat massage as options, probably about $3000 for the seat massage and $1000 for the night vision, but I'm not sure.
youmils03 3 years ago
On my s class the night vision doesn't work its a gimmic its cool to show off though. and of course I have seat massage. but then again this is not very usful 2 you becuase i don't own a s300
quatlen 3 years ago
there is a replica of this model done by Hyundai known to be Hyundai Genesis.
ejcs45 3 years ago
people who buy it are likely to be civilized driver on the road and will not need that much power the 5.5LV8 is good enough on the street unless you are going to race in it. Most cars on the road are not v8!
hallangell12 3 years ago 2
The S63 is a waste of money. I'd rather pay $10,000 extra and get four more cylinders. Who gives a shit if I have to sacrifice 12 horsepower?
