  • The solo trumpet player was Uan Rasey, not Bobby Hackett.

  • "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

  • My favorite film. Jake was a streetwise opportunist and yet even he was unable to appreciate the depravity, the pure evil, of Noah Cross until it was too late.

  • Sehr, sehr schön

  • @jwtuxkloof a comment that deserves a thumbs up.

  • Has any one here read a book called the "Principles of Art"? because no one has a clue!

  • Amazing song from a great movie.

  • Excelente canción, excelente película. Sin lugar a dudas, la mejor época de Polanski, mi director favorito.

  • @LEOVIDALDG Lionel messi c parece a roman polanski

  • best soundtrack of all time

  • Yesterday, September 26, 2011, Mr. Uan Rasey, who did the absolutely stunningly beautiful trumpet playing on this main title soundtrack, passed away. He once told this commenter that the movie's producer, Robert Evans, wanted the trumpet to sound just like Bunny Berigan, but sexier. Jerry G. hired the right trumpeter for the job. Bravo, Uan! R.I.P.

  • @murnien It sounds more like Bobby Hackett to me, but that's no insult! Great playing.

  • Magnifique !!

  • @TravoltaNewtonJohn right word!

  • Astounding how so little can do so much. Amazing how a few chords and a simple melodic line can summon such atmospheric intensity. Indelible.

  • wonderful

  • by the way any1 got the full score sheet music? message me

  • the first 17 secs are bliss... i need a loop of that.

  • WHICH INSTRUMENT IT IS?

  • Amazingly, Jerry Goldsmith composed the entire score for 'Chinatown' with ten days notice...

  • Noir is a extremely deep and emotional style. Its characters and still story's are urban tales.

  • Polanski should make another movie with jack nicholson

  • if the song were more longer...

  • always loved this..the horn is magnificent.

  • Oops. I forgot 4 pianos in the "Chinatown" soundtrack.

  • Uan Rasey's sultry trumpet solos are perfect for this film. Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack is scored for solo trumpet, 4 harps and strings. I think it's one of Jerry's best scores and the best ever for a noir film.

    vpallos

  • If a piece of music can capture the true essence of a film, then this is it. I collect film soundtracks, have done for many years, I have hundreds of them. I just cant find a track that fits the film like this one, some get close. I can rememeber when I was young seeing the film, listening to this sultry trumpet and it sent me, somewhere I cant say. But oh God! What a sound! Movies and this kind of acting are like finding a pearl on a mountain, it cant happen, but this film was such a find. Fab

  • @onlylexus I love the ST for The Firm, also - it evokes a place and a mood just as this one does.

  • THE SEMINAL IMPORTANCE OF CHINATOWN AS BOTH A FILM AND HISTORICAL IMPRINT IS UNDERSCORED BY HOW MANY PEOPLE DISCUSS AND COMPLIMENT ITS QUALITY. THE ONLY FAILING OF THE SONG IS THAT IT IS TOO SHORT...............

  • I don't feel Jake is really in love with anything or attached to anything, especially not Mrs Mulwray. What he believes is that his profession can actually make a difference and have some credibility and dignity for once in handling this case. All his illusions, that he is about to make a difference for once in his life, are shattered exactly where his career began, in Chinatown. His last words were "As little as possible" which sums up the history of his efforts and the despair of this song

  • @crisbze22 Nicely put. It's his pride that lead to not only Mrs. Mulrwray's but his doom--re-experiencing the past.

  • @crisbze22 I disagree. I think Jake loved her and her daughter. Maybe not in a romantic way, but he cared about them deeply and wanted to help them. Because, as you said, he believed he could make a difference. Not saying you're wrong, just a different point of view.

  • Chinatown is one of the most underated movies of our time. The theme music captures the sad romance and despair of love that isn't possible to sustain and a world that is hopelessly rigged against those who try to do things right.

  • @cuntaroma exactly, the despair of love that isn't possible to sustain, but especially the presentiment that this (the present) is already a memory. I love this song, my favourite ever, i pass every night studying the sounds.

  • i would not call this an ageless melody, lets say, like deerhunter themesong. It's not much of a melody whatsoever.

  • @cuntaroma Why is it that everyone calls something they like underrated? As if no one likes this film, or has ever heard of it, when it's known and agreed upon by most to be one of the greatest films made. It's just sickeningly eltist to say that.

  • @CarbonBasedAndroid 9th gate is underrated

  • @cuntaroma

I like you comment and analysis but Chinatown isn't exactly underrated, let alone be one of the most underrated ever. Its routinely mentioned in the greatest films ever and the screenplay is unanimously considered the greatest ever written.

  • @cuntaroma i think that the developers of the game L.A. Noire kind of payed homage to this film's score with their score, they sound very similar.

  • @cuntaroma UNDERRATED! UNDERRATED! ITS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE GREASTEST FILMS OF ALL TIME AND YOU THINK ITS UNDERRATED PISS OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @cuntaroma Chinatown is not underated! It's just been mostly forgotten.

Chinatown did well at the box office and received universal praise from nearly all major critics.

The problem was, Chinatown was overshadowed by the Godfather part 2.

  • @cuntaroma I wouldn't say underrated: AFI has it in their top 20 (deserving so) and most critics put it up there as one of the best New Hollywood films.

  • @cuntaroma Not underrated cunt....u`ll find it in any top 100 list

  • @cuntaroma Lionel messi looks like roman polanski..................

  • @cuntaroma I dont understand how you can label Chinatown as underrated. Its frequently referred to as one of the great modern classics.

  • @cuntaroma Not underrated at all, its widely regarded as a one of the best films ever.

  • classic....an absolutely amazing movie

  • fantastic theme
