Following the steps I successfully upgraded to 2 GB, hopefully adding some longevity to my wee little mini. If the performance is no better, well I'm only out $30.
I had a problem with the first power up. No Dell splash screen only continual beeps. So I reversed the steps checking all the connections and found the new memory stick was not completly seated (one side was not clicked in). After securing it, backtracked my way out, and she booted up. Yay!
I just ordered my 2GB stick and once it arrives, I'll follow your tutorial. Hopefully my tiny toolkit I bought is sufficient for the insanely small screws.
I have an issue with the wireless LAN card. My screw is stripped. Is it necessary to remove the card or can u just remove the cables but leave the screw and card still in tact? Thanks for your help. Great video so far
I've upgraded mine to 2GB a while ago but the netbook still very slow compared to my laptop. Mine is running on Window 7 starter. Does upgrading to Window 7 Ultimate make the netbook runs faster?
I've upgraded mine to 2GB a while ago but the netbook still very slow compared to my laptop. Mine is running on Window 7 starter. Does upgrading to Window 7 Ultimate make the netbook runs faster?
Thanks Man! This was great. I had no idea it was such a pain in the ass to upgrade memory on a netbook. It was worth it, though, because Windows 7 home premium runs much better on it now!
Thanks. Your instructions were very helpful. My only criticism is that the camera was a little too far away, but after you said what something was, or by seeing where your hands were, I could figure out what you were talking about. Thanks again!
Thank a billion times over!!!! I normally do all this stuff with trail and error... But I said, "What the hell! Let us see if this up grade is on YouTube.".... And it was!!!!!!! So, did not have to ask my self how the keyboard comes off...... That was my main "Little" problem!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep on rokin'!
Depends who you talk to. I don't necessarily notice it using just a single application. However, since I frequently run more than one application, that's where I notice it.
As long as you're not looking for a powerhouse, and can live with the limited screen real estate, it's great. I use mine almost exclusively outside of the office. It's handy for school because of the portability, and I generally don't need my "powerhouse" laptop outside of work at the moment.
Thank you so much. Worked without a hitch. I found that a few screws were too tight to unscrew by hand using my small screwdrivers. In case anyone else has the same problem... i pressed down the screw driver with one hand and used a plier to turn it with the other.
My hands hurt like a b!tch from all that prying but definitely worth it! THANKS
Yeah, I hate that loctite crap they put in there. I've stripped a few screws in other gadgets because of that crap. Now that I've got a better set of screwdrivers, it's not as bad any more, but it still happens.
Much thanks for the vids, i just did mine & its booting all good except the mouse, but i'll just have another go at that horrible little cable. Your walkthru is brilliant - made it all really easy, THANKS.
i will break my new dell mini, if i try this...so i wont!!! it has one gig, & is running windows 7, so it's okay. it would have been nice to upgrade to 2g but this is too much (delicate) work.
Double check all your connections. Reseat them if you have to to make sure. If you're not getting any BIOS beeps, then I'd be suspect of the LCD cable. If you have an external monitor you can plugin, you might try then, and give it enough time to go through a normal boot sequence.
Once I get my hands on SL. :) In theory, the methodology is the same, although I know SL introduces it's own minor headaches. Leopard works fine for what I do, so that's why I'm sticking with it, although I do like the built in Exchange support SL offers.
I'm not sure if your a expert on Dell Mini 10v's but I've been noticing that the computer will slow down and speed up. There was a noticeable difference in how well programs worked with 2gbs of ram but, it reverts back to how slow it was before. The ram I bought was Kingston Platinum Series 2GB if that helps.
I've sort of noticed that. From what I've read, and also experienced, with both the Mini 9 and Mini 10v, the hotter they get, the slower they get. Once they cool down, they speed back up. Damn passive cooling.
I've just finished with the upgrade and when I turn on the mini, the touch pad thing doesn't work. I was just wondering if I could keep it that way since I use a mouse on it. Thanks in advance!
I don't see why not. It's very possible that the ribbon just needs reseating. If I weren't so mobile with mine all the time (and not always able to use a mouse), I would admittedly probably do the same.
I just went back into my dell mini 10v since I was bugged that it wasn't perfect. The ribbon cable was a huge issue for me since it was my 2nd time going into a laptop. It took like 30 minutes to put that little cable all the way in with my huge hands. Very frustrating. But thank you very much for the video I wouldn't have done it without you.
Thank you very much, fantastic guide. Really appreciate it. I just installed my 2gb and a 500gb hard drive at the same time. Works perfectly. Thanks again!
Worked great. I had only changed a keyboard in a laptop before doing this and was able to upgrade the memory no problem. Thanks so much for posting the videos.
Well I was getting this due to a comcast deal, but they screwed up, so I'm not getting it. I ended up getting a Toshiba laptop instead just due to price.
i have a mini 10 and talked to dell tech support to see if it is even able to upgrade to 2 GB ram. They said yes but they do not have the upgrade as of now and don't recommend me to do it myself. Watching this video I think I can handle it but just want to make sure if there is any difference between the mini 10v and mini 10 that i should be aware of.
Actually, for the Mini 10, they apparently have released the ability to upgrade it to two RAM by replacing the entire daughterboard. Not sure what the cost or anything was.
Without your video, I would have never had the confidence to pull this upgrade off. I have zero experience with this stuff, but I just finished and everything went off without a hitch! Thanks so much man!
maybe a wrong place to ask. but i am thinking of getting toshiba NB205. you guys think 10v is as good as NB205? or should i just spend a little more to get NB205.
also, i heard dell might introduce backlit keyboard in mini. i like backlit keyboard. not sure if it's worth waiting though.
Hey i got a problem. i got everything done and followed all the steps. but for some reason my WAN card isnt working. it isnt recognizing it at all, ive tried all sorts of things for it to make it recognize it but nothings working. is it possible i didnt hook it up properly or maybe i disconected something on the inside for it to not register it's connection?
Certainly possible. First, I'd reseat it, then I'd double check the BIOS. Also, make sure your antennas are connected properly, but I suspect that wouldn't cause it to not be recognized. In theory, the RAM upgrade shouldn't affect the wireless card at all.
Dell brand is good quality but they are always behind in specs and overly priced compare to their competitors...case in point: Mini 9...and now they almost builted a perfect mini 10v but behind again with only 1 gig ram and a pain in the ass 2 gig ram upgrade...come dell , do ur research and be ahead of the game.
Thanks, Anguish! 2GB swap for my 10v went flawlessly... took 15 min (watched your 3 videos last night before cracking the case today). BTW- the release tabs on the trackpad/keyboard ribbon cable connectors slide outward away from the connector, parallel to the cables. For others considering this swap, "go for it!" Watch the vids as you go, be careful, pay attention to what you are disconnecting and make sure you re-connected on the way out. Now, on to Anguish's OSX install (via Dell Mini forum)!
It's the one that came with it. That's just an Apple logo sticker. I need to replace it though, because the Dell logo is grooved, unlike the Mini 9 which was flat.
The tutorial is great! Thank You!

would you say that this is easy for somebody to do with very little prior experience?
I just installed OS X on mine and now I'm looking to do the ram.

I can't even get into the BIOS.

Why am I paranoid about doing this?

Because it's a netbook. It's tiny and compact, and seems very fragile. :D It's really not that bad if you've ever taken apart a laptop before.

The 10v has modular memory that CAN be upgraded, the mini 10 has memory soldered onto the motherboard, so it is pretty much impossible to upgrade.
