I like to think of it this way.

There are so many systems in this galaxy, almost without number. Within those, are numerous planets,more than our own system boasts.

To add to that, our galaxy itself is not alone. Billions of galaxies make up the cosmic web. Each of them perhaps with more content than ours.

Even though i believe that the majority, perhaps even all alien sightings have been fake, its safe to say that we are not alone.

I'm pretty sure the water contained something in the tap, as pointed out by the daughter (which is why she never finished her glasses because they "tasted funny"). That would sort of tie into the whole fate theme. They are unaffected by the moisture in the air so this would lend support to that.

But my second time through, I noticed that the radio broadcast you hear when they wake up in the cellar the morning after the invasion, they say "the aliens came here to harvest humans.", which certainly agrees with the plot. Perhaps they knew that we were a race that would be biologically 75% water, since we lived near it, and wanted to take us to study so they could try to find a cure to their weakness. Just a speculation.

That could explain why they were dragging civillians away instead of risking war with humanity and having prolonged exposure to the planet, I mean the alien in this seemed to survive several glasses of water falling on him before the final one that fell on his face. So you could argue they were capable of surviving tiny particles in the air for an extended amount of time.

It all leads up to that last part. It is a very clever movie in that sense.

I remember when I first saw this many years ago I thought the fight was epic. But now that I rewatch it I realize it's rather pathetic. You're pitting an 8-foot tall super athletic (can jump 10 feet onto a roof) poison gas spewing alien against a lower species with a club. It's a pity that some people just can see and criticize negatively the alien-water matter (even when the menace is more of a mistery in this movie, and spectators aren't evidently supposed to know very much of it and its purposes), while I don't manage to see anything beyond the power of this whole scene and how every single second of the music literally goes and flows with the imagery in a way that makes me stand still even after the ending credits. It's overwhelming filmmaking.

The whole view on the aliens in this film is an idea ...More that 71% of this earth is covered by water . Moisture in the air , rain ...super soakers from an army of young kids could kill them .The point is interpretation of what these being are , not just from the faith healing part of the story ..but from how these race of aliens work ...They have come here to harvest humans and take our resources ...but was water one of them ? how do we know how water effects other lifeforms ?
