  • hey dan : ) if I had a big block of metal and charged it up with lots of heat by a Fresnel lens all day long ( with insulation around the back/sides.. then as the sun goes down fully wrap insulation all around to store the heat and wheel it into my living room.then maybe, I could unwrap the hot block of metal late at night and use it as a radiator to heat up a room? it would be free heat! really efficient too, depending on the insulation method used. what do you think?

  • It works:-)

  • @rainbowsalads I'm looking into that right now. I'm thinking I could build a small box (on wheels) with firebrick on the bottom and sides, ceramic tile top cover, heat up a steel plate, place in the box. 12x12x.5" mild steel plate weighs about 20 pounds. Can weld a loop to it for easy carry. At 570 degrees it would offer 10k BTU of space heating. After that it comes down to how many units I can heat and the rate of transfer through the box.

  • @kpeavey2 sounds great : ) i was thinking, that what ever is heated needs to be off the ground or insulated as much as possible to stop heat transferring back out of the metal block during the time it is being charged , perhaps it could be hanging? Or suspended by magnets? At least wrapped all around except the small area where the Fresnel is aimed . Then when the time is right, take off the insulation and release lots of efficient heat energy. : )

  • I would like to request some louder sound :)

  • Hi, What can your Infrared thermometer read up to in Celsius? I would really love to do this as a water heater but I too live in Glasgow and it rains 90% of the time

  • Hi Yes.

It has a C option. We had an 89 day run of no sun here. I can only imagine. PV works in clouds, not as strong but that may help.

  • so i live in Scotland, we don't have your climate,

what can I do to become more energy self-sufficient?

  • Hi,

The Fresnel Lenses work based on quality sunlight and not outside temperature. This video was made at 18:00 when the sun is low on the horizon. If you have clear days without clouds, you can do the same thing. Also PV solar panels actually work better in cooler climates. If you have long periods of no sun then other options are necessary. Are you located in the Highlands? What would you estimates your average yearly sunshine is?

  • I'm actually in Glasgow and I have no idea!

the sun is shining lovely today tho :)

how does one go about installing PV solar panels and will one quickly regain the initial investment

  • that's a bummer you maxed it out.

i hear you can use a video camera to take extreme temperature measurements - by comparing the brightness to a chart.

i guess you have to make your own chart up though.

  • Excellent! I love these Fresnel lens videos.

  • What make/model IR thermometer are you using? Thanks...
