Even if he never wins a grand prix, which is looking more likely each and every day. He'll at least have this record, and the Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record if i'm correct.
I was there. standing with a bunch of friends by the house. The whole crowd spontaneously burst into applause after he went past and he hadn't even gone up the hill yet, just the collective joy of seeing some young idiot going for it
Absolutely awesome. I went to the FoS yesterday and it was really fantastic, the guys on the radio were constantly urging us to look at this and I'm glad I did, that was commitment from Heidfeld!
Iwas there in '99 and will remember this run forever. SO great to hear an F1 at work rather than just seeing and hearing the seemingly endless series of burnouts and off the revlimiter noise. Well done Mclaren and Nick.
Good to hear an F1 car hard at work at Goodwood, most of the time they either rev the hell out of them, or take it slow and easy, you can only listen to an F1 engine bounce off a rev limiter so many times before it gets kinda old, I like the beautiful song of a driver going quickly up through the gears, or the snarl of the exhaust as he downshifts into a corner better than mindless revving personally.
@XXformula i feel the same but its due to the fact that they don't time the modern F1 cars because they thought it too dangerous to have cars travelling so quickly so close to a crowd protected only by straw bails (all part of the fun in my opinion) but you can see their point
@XXformula but the festival of speed is not about racing, and alot of the drivers are told to take it slow to show off what a motorcar can do and what different aspects make it up. but its your opinion and i respect that
I was there in 99 when he set the record, everyone driving F1 cars or similar just take it steady and give a bit of a show. We were chatting in the stand when we heard an almighty scream as Heidfeld hammered it from the start and passed us on the main straight under the bridge. Was amazing!!!!
YEah the only man that have the guts to floor it and the brain to understand that people didn't came there to see you wave your arm at parking speed...The people want to see the real SPEED..Anyway he's young and mad..A little unfortune and he could flyies on the crowd..
@dewa002 Everyone round me broke into applause immediately he went past. Gobsmacking to see someone actually going ballsout. Of course he could have killed about 40 people had things not panned out, but having missed out on late 60's f1, it was nice to witness a moment that probably can't happen again.
some of the group c 'le mans' cars come pretty close to this time and rod millen in the toyota tacoma has done it in 44 secs or so but i doubt this time will ever be beat.
1999 was my 1st Goodwood Festival of Speed. I have been every year since, expect 1 where i was ill

Deep respect - that 's one hell of a run! Completely committed round Molecomb and past the wall. Need balls to do that at full tilt!

@dienkonig33 Not anymore... They released him from his contract so that he could develop the Pirelli tyres as an independant assessor

I guess this is as close as we'll get to seeing modern F1 cars running on the kinds of circuits Fangio and the other old greats raced on.
