That *is* ketchup. Japanese ketchup is thinner and sweeter than American ketchup, since it's made with extra vinegar and sugar. And ketchup rice omelets (a.k.a. omurice) are a staple of Japanese home cooking.
We also put ketchup with rice and tomatoes and fried eggs together... We put ketchup or tomato pastes to produce the colour and sour to the rice... If we only put tomatoes, a good red colour cannot be created
