I suppose without Labor Unions and Government intervention the free market MAY have cleaned up their act. But I do not believe that people wanted to have another 50 years of the gilded age. The wild card to free markets is the human nature. It works great when people give a damn about workers and safety but that doesn`t always happen. That is why unions formed and why government sometimes has to step in.
Pure Capitalism as with Pure Socialism only work in a utopia.
@Allante715 the rise in living standards was not because of the government. It was because of the accumulation of capital. I suggest you watch this rest of this lecture by Tom Woods, he addresses all of your concerns, which are mythical.
The difference between socialism and capitalism is socialism cannot work, even if all "men were angels". It is an economic calculation problem. I suggest you google "Economic Calculation Problem"
A problem that government can solve but that the free market is not only powerless to solve, but actually makes worse: Murder for hire.
The market can set the price that you need to pay me to kill someone for you. However, we, as a society, have decided that, even though it is profitable for me to charge you money in exchange for committing murder, it is not acceptable to do so. So, how does the free market do anything but support the "murder for hire industry?" It can't. Government can.
@ssbohio Governments ARE murder for hire! Governments are responsible for more murders than any group of private individuals could ever dream of getting away with.
If society decides murder is unacceptable, taking away the government wouldn't change it. I suggest a few articles and videos if you are open to changing your mind: Wouldn't Warlords Take Over? By Robert P. Murphy. Libertarian Society- What about corrupt or criminal voluntary courts? by Murray Rothbard.
@ssbohio "Answering the Warring Defense Agencies Objection" by Murray Rothbard. (Rothbard ones are videos on my page, Murphy one is an article, just google it). "Wouldn't a private defense agency become criminal, or turn into a dictatorship, etc?" On my Youtube channel. "Rothbard destroys a common statist argument." on youtube.
In a society where murder is unacceptable, anyone found murdering people would be stopped by voluntarily funded defense agencies.
