  • ferras style of playing is unique... just look the way he holds the bow and how he holds the violin... he told his students never to copy him... it was a very personal style... but i guess its good, just look the sound... the first time i listened this movement was from this recording and surprised me, first his soul and second his technique (sibelius concerto is really hard)...

  • Before Youtube I had nver heard of Christian Ferras. Now he is my favorite violinist. His Sibelius on cd with Karajan is phantastic. Not to mention his Mendelssohn, Chausson, Franck, Beethoven etc. etc. What a beautiful tone, drama and soul he put in his playing! Very moving..

  • Lindíssimo... chorei...

    :)

  • Ma a 2.37 in poi,che cazzo fa l'orchestra?Mehta è davvero incapace di seguirlo...

  • maravilloso

  • Besides the best interpretation of Sibelius, hearing from another violinist after that is an insult to music!

  • thnx for uploading :)

  • You can say wathever you want but there are no more people like this,i mean violinists, nobody can touch you like this nowdays... no hahn, jansen, vengerov etc..

  • 7 dislikes ?!? do you know how to spell violin? have you ever held one in your hand? why don't you go play on the highway and do us all a nice favor . thank you LOL

  • @dlewzy and johnEBPiano: the idea that there can't be great music today isn't just sentimentalism, it has basis in ideas of people like adorno. say, what if the spiritual condition is so impossible to work in that the only possible realization of art is a rejection of it. We suffer differently then people like sibelius did. Maybe you don't as people who listen to his music and live and are able to live in that aesthetic and emotional world.

  • Stupefacente!!!! Una delle migliori interpretazioni....se non la migliore che abbia sentito fino ad ora!!!!

  • It is truly one of a kind. Absolutely amazing.

  • Such a shame that no one makes music as human as this today. Its all about getting girls with cristal at the latest club whilst wearing the latest cloths from prada. How shallow the human race has become!!

  • @dlewzey shut up... there are musicians everywhere and composers that work very hard today. people were focused on alcohol and women 2000 years ago...

  • @JohnEBPiano alright then, there are composers who work hard everyday, has any composer say in the last 15-30 years composed a piece of muasic like this? Has any pianist composed anything like Chopins nocturns since 2000? I agree with your comment about alcohol but I really feel that the music of todays standard is hardly creative, I would also dare say that a lot of it is just a loop machine with some words spoken over it.

  • @dlewzey I'm talking about classical music being written today. You might feel like there is less of it written today, which is true. But there was not only classical music being written in Sibelius's time; it was considered serious music and composed by a handful of talented composers. There are, however, still struggling contemporary artists today that write very good music but sentimentalists make comments like your own and block out the idea that there might be great composers living today.

  • @JohnEBPiano Ok cool. I understand what you mean, No offense intended there.

  • @dlewzey haha same here man. I get so frustrated by youtube comments and sometimes I forget that there are nice intelligent people behind the comments.

  • @JohnEBPiano Thankee. Btw, I saw your take on Rachmaninoff's prelude. Great effort! It does not strike me as easy. Give me a shout when you do some more ya!

  • @dlewzey Hey man subscribe, I'd appreciate it :) I haven't been playing that long so I get better in strides and I'm about to upload some new stuff that shows that!

  • @dlewzey Also you strike me as a man of decent taste in music, I'm going to upload some classical guitar videos in the next few weeks and I would certainly appreciate your opinion on the music if you would not mind my asking!

  • Gracias SamLee0519 por recuperar esta emocionante y maravillosa interpretación de Christian Ferras.

  • Outstanding. There's a guy who loved his job. This would have been lost forever without Youtube.

  • I love the french horn part !

  • Gives me chills every time I watch this. Obviously no ordinary person can play with such raw emotion and intensity. Depression obviously brought out the genius in him. But it also ended his life in the saddest of ways. Truly amazing playing!

  • just art.

  • omg, this vibrato is awful

  • @IZn0g0uDatAll awful, electric, spasmodic vibrato. not nice at all but am not saying he doesnt feel it

  • @polishblacksoul3 It's a valid opinion, I guess.

-only that he DOES use it to provide emphasis for when the song is building up. This is how some songs should be played, because providing emotion provides character to songs. Obviously when you hear Christian Ferras play this movement, you know it is Christian Ferras. It's so unique, and definitely not 'raunchy' despite what you say.

  • music and poetry overlap. Absolute perfection.

  • When was this recorded?

  • Ferras was the god of violinists. Silly to say that I know: there were so many other great players but this performance pushes me to be excessive in my compliments!

  • Ferras truly makes the violin "sing" as if it were a human voice...the expression of sorrow and pain that I feel is indescribable. It is eerie to think that Ferras was so good at portraying these emotions because of his internal conflicts and depression (and subsequently resulting in his suicide...). I'm just glad he recorded this...his legacy will live on.

  • I'm so proud to know that my father conducted this master violinist :)

  • @DKSpawn333: Who is your father?

  • this wasn't my favorite rendition the first time I heard it.in my opinion it was too much vibrato, but now I'm ready to say that my opinion is very very modest. 'till the end it became my very favorite one for good.I can't say a thing about his emotion, but mine...he make me silent..every time I hear him.

  • 6:25

    OH MY GOD.

  • I don't really mind the audience clapping at the end of the 1st movement, but clapping at the end of the 2nd movement??! That just completely ruins the atmosphere :(

  • @dragonmaster11000 I can see why it would ruin the atmosphere, but they did it cause it was soooo good! This performance of the 2nd movement was so moving. But i do agree that I like the 2nd and 3rd movements played more attaca. I guess the audience couldn't help themselves cause of the genius performance by Ferras!

  • The best violinist ever. I cannot believe there are four dislikes!

  • For me he's the greatest violist of all times.... Let's cherish his precious recordings...

  • This is unbelievably good - wow Ferras

  • If there is such a thing as the best at anything, this is the one. Next step would be insanity.

  • He is not playing with his hands. He is playing with his heart and soul not caring about the outcome. Truly a great artist of the highest calibre

  • @utrocca Oh no no! It is highly structured and controlled. You just can´t hear it because he is a master.

  • does the man have tears in his eyes at 3:00

    cause I do D:

  • @muse113bliss i'm glad im not the only one crying like a little girl. the entire movement is absolutely haunting.

  • @muse113bliss

I think, yes. Look at 7:05 and the entry after 7:25 (both eyes!). He is transpiring a lot, but also, I think, you can see tears under his eyes. And it would not surprise me, this is a hauntingly emotional, as well as technically brilliant, performance. For me, Christian Ferras is one of the most believable violinists ever. His Brahms and Sibelius concertos remain a revelation!

  • conheci Sibelius através de Christian Ferras, este violinista maldito, cujas cordas soavam todo pathos possível desse instrumento.Monumental e esplêndido é o que se pode dizer do mais lindo concerto de Sibelius, executado por esse Cara.

  • Who are the four retards who disliked this vid?

  • @thefencingmaster23 probably vanessa mae fans.

  • @thefencingmaster23

    janine jansen fans

  • @thefencingmaster23 7 now, looks like they're breeding

  • @thefencingmaster23

    violists

  • totally wonderful

  • Phenomenal playing. Beauty and sorrow channeled from the depths of his soul.

  • Shit....

  • the 4 people who disliked this are soulless bastards!

  • This and the Kogan's live performance of the 3rd movement of the Shostakovich (posted by frye) are probably the most emotional and moving violin videos on Youtube... so many chills from them.

  • The emotion on Zubin Mehta's face at the end of the movement explains whether those were tears. Truly a violinist of genius! Thank you SamLee0519 for the ability to be able to keep this video for ever.

  • @fanniandwads ferras is crying too. what a masterful performance. what a great great privalige it must have been to have actually been there on the night

  • 7:53. Are those tears, sweat, or both?

  • superlative. makes speech superfluous.

  • Truly the greatest rendition of Sibelius. In order to play like this one must suffer his death and be reborn. The emotion that he brings out of this piece is not comparable.

  • o my Goddddd..........I am crying ........ such a music such a playing,,,,,, i would like to be there in hall that time

  • For sure that's the best rendition of the Jan Sibelius Violin Concerto...nobody performed it like the French violin virtuoso Christian Ferras !

  • In spite of the beautiful music he produced from his instrument, Christian Ferras struggled with severe lifelong depression. The illustrious career of this distinguished violinist came to a tragic end when he committed suicide on September 14, 1982. [wikipedia]

...what a great loss and an awful tragedy!

  • I am ashamed to say i know nothing of christian Ferras, but after this, i will endevour to know much more. Certainly does bring a lump to the throat. :-)

  • More people must know about him. To my amazement many young violinists don't. Heck! some music librarians haven't a clue.

His rendition of the sibelius is simply divine.

  • There is no argument here about the beauty of this performance. The pain, tears and emotion comes out and pulls at the heart.

  • The Grandmaster of emotional violin playing. This piece is played like a true master. I wish he never killed himself if he only knew he had such a vast following, people who would willingly help him out of his depths. It is imposible to listen without breaking out into tears or atleast a lump in the throat.

  • lolll he does not like to wait for the orchestra

but i agree with everyone else's comments, such a painful (in a good way) performance i have never seen

  • it's mind blowing how nobody else even comes close to this level of playing for this concerto.

this is truly a once in a lifetime performance, and i would give anything to go back and listen to him.

    just ridiculous.

  • no puedo expresar con una sola palabra lo que me hizo sentir este concierto! BRAVO!

  • what unparalleled comprehension and emotion for this piece. No one, and I mean no one, will ever be able to match the quality of the deep passion that Mr. Christian Ferras obtains in his soul. May he rest in piece. What a wonderful performer and most of all musician.

  • Sibelius' most sensitive piece of music.....performed with tears showing deep emotions. Witnessing this is a miracle. This is so so profound. Great Mr. Christian Ferras: thank you. You are a hero.

  • Camera close-up shows his soul, so I am appreciative is there.

  • Thank you for this video, I will treasure it always. Such genius is rarely found.

His grave is south of Paris and I hope to make a pilgrimage there in 2010.

  • I wish the camera wasn't zoomed in quite so often.

  • make it ENCOMPASSING. Sorry, foreigners have difficult time with spelling and, in my case, also TYPING..

  • Will never tire listening to him. So easy to get obsessed over such an all encopasing masterpiece.

  • The hypersensitivity of this most amazing artist is the result of tremendous pain and inner conflict.

We are so privileged to listen to what came out of his agony and suffering: an unparalleled creation of sound.

  • We are so lucky to be listening to such music and Ferras's interpretaion of Sibelius, for me at least, is the best I've heard.

  • i would give anything to have listened to this live.

  • Captivating and Hypnotic! One of the most incredible violinist of all time. I

  • I wish everyone would have the chance to hear and appreciate this performance.

Ferras is discussing with God and all Universe and the members of the orchestra seem to be under a spell as well.

And they say the French don't understand Sibelius ...

  • Interpretazione incredibile, unica per intensità, passione e precisione. Fino ad oggi consideravo la versione in studio di Oistrakh, dir. Mavrinsky, insuperabile; mi debbo ricredere.

  • The best rendition nonpareil, straight from the heart - 7:55. Many thanks, Ferras!

  • この人のシベリウスってカラヤンが指揮したときは普通だったけど、それと比べてこの動画の演奏は凄い。この指揮者って誰?メータかな

  • This is the best version for me also! I am relifed I am not alone in that opinion.

  • Best Sibelius! From 7:40 to 8:10 you can see he burst into tears :|

  • you are right, wow thats incredible

  • I think he was crying early on.

  • It's astonishing. Vow!!! He managed to stay cool til' almost very end, where he gave up to emotions. What a fantastic bow work. You can't hear the change of bow, it's seamless. His holding of the bow is not the best, too deep, some fingers lie flat because of that, but it doesn't make any difference, as he can apply bow pressure when he wants to, and it serves him perfectly. This is the best performance of this piece I've ever heard.

  • it's the best version i've ever heard.

  • This is a unique version of this concerto. You can not compare with any actual young violinists. I can compere only with Oistrakh. for me this is the best version of this concerto.

  • good grief, what sorrow...

  • this is the meaning of life

  • I was listening, thinking "Yeah, this is pretty nice I gue - OHHHHH". The way it builds and soars, it's just... I don't have the words, it's so heartbreaking and beautiful...

  • This is the best thing on YouTube.

  • Indeed it is. It's the only rendition of this that brings me to tears.

  • @neonfish07 agreed.

  • @neonfish07: Congratulations! You hit the bull's eye!

  • Written in 1903 in Järvenpää, Finland, at the author's residence where he found the peace necessary to compose, it was known a 1st version on february 8, 1904 in Helsinki, but unsatisfied with it , Sibelius gave another revision and finally premiered it on october 19, 1905 with violinist Karl Halir and the orchestra conducted for non other than Richard Strauss, this 2nd movement is calm, cool and magic just as the composer's homeland, Finland

  • I think this movement is also on fire and not just cold cool an magic...

  • @beethomozart Thank you for providing and expanding on the background history of this rare in beauty composition. Ferras's most sensitive interpretation, I would think, must have thrilled Sibelius.

How much poorer we are with the passing of such artists!

  • Does he cry at 7:55 ?

It looks that way but my friends say its sweat.

I think he scries ;) haha

  • It's both.

  • My God,what a masterpiece!!!

  • This is one of the best things in life EVER!!!

  • The last part, so tender... beautiful...

  • Ridiculously intense! Utter perfection!

  • Herbert Von Karajan a dit de Christian Ferras :" c´est le plus grand pour toujours " . chaque instants de cet enregistrement le confirme .

  • there's so much emotion in this movement.

absolutely amazing...i get choked up everytime I listen to this.

  • BEAUTIFUL! My head got all tingly watching this! This is the best recording of Sibelius I've ever heard (orchestra fail at 2:38 notwithstanding :p)

  • I cried watching this... the power of music is just incredible.

    Best Sibelius I've heard.

  • This is true ART!

Wonderful violin concerto by Sibelius. Excellent conducting by Zubin Mehta!

And a dvivine play of the violin by Christian Ferras!

Absolutely amazing! I have no words for how good this is...

I am stunned! I have goosebumps all over my body enjoying this.

  • /watch?v=fFH0khjgA0U

  • i started crying when i first heard this, then i realized that was ok because ferras himself is crying during this.

wow. amazing and so passionate. wonderful.

  • If music could weep,

without a doubt I'd refer to this recording.

Blissful rendition and performance, but the feeling put into this is beyond the words of any man.

Illogical critics or loving and praising viewers, his effort put into this piece is just beyond...

  • Quel lyrisme! Violoniste, orchestre et chef d'orchestre somptueux! Bravo!

  • I watch this and I just wanna play my violin till I sweat and get exhausted!

  • I fucking love it! It's great indeed.

  • This is probably the best interpretation I've heard of Sibelius. Powerful indeed. :((

    RIP Ferras

  • too beautiful to be expressed by words.

  • It looks like he's crying on 8:04.. makes it even more beautiful than it already is.

    Lost for words.

  • his bow changes are so amazing, you cant even hear it!!

  • My heart is touched

    Rest In Peace Ferras

I hope that you are playing in eternal bliss in heaven

  • giant Ferras, one of the best performance of this masterpiece

  • one of the best performances of anything, ever

  • indeed

  • I am left speechless.

  • Mehta bites his lip at the end so I suppose he is very moved by this wonderful performance and Christian Ferras being very emotional. I imagine he will never forget that concert.

  • Hmm? He lifts the violin off the shoulder completely...wouldn't that be extra work? Or maybe my technique is wrong...

  • I´ve nEVER heard so heavenly performance... he tooks my breath away... again and again...

  • Le violon, l'instrument de l'esprit.

    Le violoncelle, l'instrument du coeur.

Avec Ferras, le violon devient l'instrument du coeur.

Violin, the instrument of the spirit.

    Cello, instrument of the heart.

With Ferras, violin become the instrument of the heart.

  • I love this performance. How often do you actually see a musician crying from the emotion they're putting into the piece? When you combine that with knowledge of his depression it paints a very sad picture.

  • there's a reason why you're on youtube making stupid remarks and not out in the real world making money. good job at sounding like an idiot.

  • You do realise that just by claiming that one professional is "much better" than another is self righteous and idiotic? Yes sure, other violinists thought he was great, and as professionals they'd never dare say they were better. You obviously don't understand the Heifetz phenomenon yourself, and why he was so popular. I'm not taking anything away from him, because he really was one of the greats. It all really comes down to this: You're a deuchebag, and implying Ferras is amateurish is stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • I like more Heifetz but the best second mvt of sibelius is untill today ferras's.

  • I like Heifetz, but only for his technical skills. I don't care for his interpretations on some things. This is, and will probably always be, my favorite interpretation on the Sibelius. It's beautiful, haunting, and touches the soul in a way words can not express. All the players are legendary for many reasons, Ferras, in my mind is because of his haunting interpretations on so many pieces.

  • This is one of the most difficult pieces in all of violin literature to play effectively but Ferras makes it look so effortless. And while he makes it llok so effortless, he pours all of his heart and emotion into it. Astounding, who else can do that? Not too many others at ALL

  • il vibrato è troppo stretto! meglio Oistrakh!

  • incredible how people sometimes can make all the materialistic disapear for a moment...

  • Best ever interpretation.. heartbreaking.

  • Absolutely brilliant.

  • listen to 2:38...

  • Un tel son est si déchirant que c'en est insupportable;-on dirait que les cordes pleurent---

  • so raw. i love it

  • Thank you for posting this video, I will treasure it forever!

  • Unbaliveble! When i think on the most emotional and musically greatest performance i think in this clip!A historical moment in violin music.

  • tears on que, emotions on que, tackiness on que or what ever another worm critic assumes, It worked. Without a doubt it had me in tears by the end.. What an infinitely graceful and beautiful piece.. from a master of a composer, and a virtuoso at the violin.

    6/5

  • that is so fucking amazing........ im speechless.

  • POR LEJOS CREO QUE ESTA ES LA MEJOR INTERPRETACION QUE EXISTE DE ESTE CONCIERTO. SI BIEN TENEMOS UNA MUY BUENA VERCION DE BELL VENGEROV MUTTER PERLMAN HAHN (ultimo disco) STERN OISTRAKH HE INCLUSO HEIFETZ ESTA RERALMENTE LOGRA QUE LAS OTRAS CAIGAN EN EL COMPLETO OLVIDO (es el mismo caso del concierto de beethoven por kreisler en 1936 en londres o el concierto de dvorak por milstein) UNICOOOO

  • Heavenly.

  • Real tears. "crying on que" has more to do with the several cameras at different angles and the film editor putting this show together for viewers to see. It was probably edited to show the beginning of the intense emotion involved in this piece.

  • Lol that's the biggest bullshit I've ever heard. Why is it so hard to believe that a violinist who suffered from depression his entire life cried sincere tears during an emotionally intense performance?
