It's a matter of context. When it says "hate", it means that RELATIVE to your love for God, your love for your family is hate.

The point is that you love God far more than anything else.

The word hate as written in the bible in Greek used the word miseo which according to Strong's Lexicon means "to love less". I don't think hate is the correct translation. It appears the correct translation to love less is just reiterating what Matthew said?
