This is completely awful. It's not just a matter of the guitar player, is a matter of the whole band. where the f*ck is the mellotron? where is the crunchy distortled bass? where is the feeling? why two steps down tunned?
If you want to cover KC, do it well, with personality, but this is ruining a song. That's why nobody went to your bday.
It would eliminate the confusion if the video wasn't titled the way it was. That way people would focus on listening to this version from a different perspective, rather than talking about this guitarist trying to replace Fripp
The guitarist didnt make me claw my eyes out like most of the comments were saying, but his playing really is a problem. Pretty much all of it is. Its technically accomplished, but filling every single second with notes isnt really how you perform a song like this. It makes it come off as monotone, whereas the original started off melancholy, built in strength, then scaled back to a groove and finally ended with a powerful instrumental that increased in intensity. This version's got none of that
a clear example of the difference between being a good guitarist and being a good musician.you should just put yr guitar aside and start to learn what SILENCE mean betwen the beats of a song.
Decent cover (as one would expect from John Wetton) but John MItchell doesn't leave enough "breath" in the early parts for my taste, he's still a fine guitarist though, but no-one can replace Fripp, still a damn fine piece of music!
Again, this in not King Crimson. This is not King Crimson. This is not King Crimson. John Wetton is in good form. The guitarist is a bit too jack-offy for my tastes. Actually, as the video progresses, the guitarist really annoys me. But remember, this is not King Crimson. This is not King Crimson. This is not King Crimson. Oh yea, this is not King Crimson.

Why all the misinformation from these comments? This is not King Crimson. This is John Wetton (former KC member) and John Mitchell covering a King Crimson song. Nobody is replacing Fripp...do some research folks.
I think that's John Mitchell from Arena & It Bites on guitar. If so, he's actually a great vocalist and guitarist, but yes - there is only one Fripp. Not a bad trade though if you can't have Fripp.
why the neg. bro, shut your monitor off and listen, this is a fabulous performance of a brilliant work. The guitarist was true to many of Fripp's melodies while injected his stylings into the mix. I fail to hear what's wrong with that. So what if the guy's got some dorky moves, it's no biggy if you appreciate music as it should be, with the ears . . . . unless of course, it's Annette Peacock or Carla Bley.
@mydaughtersbong I know what you mean... look, I have a version of this song myself, and it sounds nothing like the original. I'm not the kind of person who thinks a cover should be the exact same thing as the original, it's just I can't stand these "I'm going to show my awesome skills" musicians, you know?? Love the song, not too crazy abt. this version. Like Jobson/Wetton's version of this much better, not to mention original KC version. Kudos for playing w. the arrangment, but it doesn't work well.

Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Yuck. Pretty good and I love this song, one of the few songs I can listen to over and over again without getting bored of it. But, all the digital as fuck instruments make it sound so cheesy. The guitarist could have made a bit of an effort to stay true to the signature tone on the original recording of this track and not too keen on what the drummer plays during the 13/4, completely changed the feel.
Personal opinion though...anyone else feel the same?!
@TheFoxFeelsNothing Really the keyboards these days even older bands use are terrible. For example, Tony Banks using what sounded like a little kid's Casio on their 2007 tour was just terrible. Using the old analog equipment and mellotrons is what makes the sound. You can't recreate that. These guys can easily afford to spend the extra bucks hauling that gear and having guys to maintain it on tour. What the hell.....
fans of the amazing King Crimson will like this atypical acoustic * instrumental * trio. featuring thought provoking compositions that stick in your mind, ethereal chamber violin, guitar played in every capo position strummed at times or in revolving melody and a drummer who only listens to classical. makes for some interesting listening. after forming in mid 2008, they are gaining a fan base in the U.S., Sweden, Germany, Italy and Japan.
Echo en falta, siempre, siempre, el contundente sonido de la caja de Bruford. No se porqué, pero la agresividad del golpeo de BB le daba un dramatismo unico al Starless original. De todas formas es un tema tan grandioso que siempre suena interesante.
The drummer and guitarist do overplay their parts. They're obviously no Brufford and Fripp, but I think I would like this song even no matter who was playing it.

dont care waht anybody says I like this,Wetton is my fave vocalist with crimson,he sings very well I think he has a very masculine voice not alot of range but has alot of character and good pitch, for all of you hatin on the gtr guy ask yourself this, since youre not fripp ,if you had the chance to this song play with wetton, what would you play? Id try to make it my own which is what this guy is trying to do
everybody needs to stop hating this guitarist, the only one who does tremendously bad in this performance is john wetton himself, i mean, he can barely sing.
this is a great performance, it's nice to see fripp out of the picture to be honest. this guitar part sounded like a refreshing addition to the piece.
A "corporate" version of one of the finest pieces in the entire rock repertoire. A very correct, textbook performance with a nice interpretation of the centerpiece. However... having seen King Crimson perform this live in the 1970s, watching this, there's something very sorely lacking. I cannot pin down what it is.... it just don't "feel right".

You guys commenting sound like a bunch of Rolling stone wannabe's...Stop being asshole's. Great song and great interpretation. I just happen to like metal so the guitar appeals to me, If it doesn't oh well Fripp could give 2 shits about this song. I LOVE fripp no doubt but cmon that guitar is fuckin sick
wish they played les pauls/ strats and teles as opposed to modern shredding guitars :( i love the vibe of the 70s records and to think they use all modern gear now is a let down :( but nonetheless they are just FANTASTIC and one of my favourite bands for sure
Mr.Wetton does`nt seem to mind the Guitar work at All,I think they bring that song nicely towards the 21st Century. As a Guitar player just working this up with the band,I`m inclined to want a little modernization myself.Very Good Version. ...Mace...
I didn't mind the guitarist at first, but when the evil/doom part on bass began... well I just slapped myself in the face. why the guitarist changed the original notes Fripp wrote??I just can't stand that kind of people. Fripp made this part even more interesting, more psychodelic and beautifull. On the original recording Fripp played only 2 notes! and he was making more than this guitarist now!
@sifstudio the original KC song is unsurpassed-no doubt about it, but i like this version very much too. The guitar sounds more ''modern'' and i dare say, ''mellower'' here, though not lacking in intencity. Gives a different perspective of this KC masterpiece.
That guitarist is absurd. I agree with the Jamfan100's comment re: Dream Theater. That slick, WD40, Trevor Rabin shite just doesn't do a King Crimson song any justice.
Great version of a classic. Unmistakeable John Wetton vocals and bass playing. I thought the guitarist did a good job here...as did the rest of the band.
Great version of a classic. Unmistakeable John Wetton vocals and bass playing. I thought the guitarist did a good job here...as did the rest of the band.
did anybody knows about KC... this ain't a cover... John Wetton is the original vocals of starless, part of KC, he have all the right to singer or made a version as he please, matter of fact i like this one, well done Mr. Wetton
Decent, nothing special. Low energy for such a powerful composition. The guitarist isn't Fripp, and the drummer isn't Bruford so the shit can't be that great.
Great song, great guitar by John Mitchell - but Crimson's original version from Red or even the one from Live in the USA with David Cross taking the melody on violin will always be the best!!!
It took a while, but it sounds like the Fripptronics effect is in there. Greg Lake had a better voice but this has song always sounded good with John Wetton, even live.
KING CRIMSON tribute band THE GREAT DECEIVERS are playing on Saturday, July 17th, 2010 @ the Good Hurt club in West Los Angeles!!! Find them on myspace and/or Facebook to send them your name and email address to get in for FREE!!!
The guitarist is actually John Mitchell, lead guitarist with It Bites, one of the finest players on the planet and far, far superior to Robert Fripp in every possible respect. I can't see the keyboard player's face, but by style, genius and the chunky arms and watch, I think it's my old amigo Martin Orford, ex IQ virtuoso.
@tonythekingfisher Ah yes, John Mitchell. Awesome. Thanks for straightening me out on that. I think he is doing a great job on this song. I don't know why all these negative comments about him. He really is a good guitarist. Wetton sounds good. I have always loved his vocals. My favorite King Crimson singer has got to be Greg Lake though. Anyway, thanks for the comment and thanks to the person that posted this vid.
@tonythekingfisher There's a lot of controversy around Lake and Wetton about who's better bass player/singer. In fact i found they are very similar. But i had to point a winner i'd choose Lake, because is a master with the acoustic guitar.
The guitarist is really disastrous. He plays too much, not letting the voice sing alone. And then he shows that he does not comprehend what a slow progression is. Where's the need of being original when playing this already great song? He sounds good when he plays strictly the theme.
Wetton out of it here. His voice rather warbly and his timing off, in his singing. Perhaps was during a bout with the booze? Great song though. To hear a REALLY great live version, get the John Wetton's Chasing the Dragon CD. It's shorter than this - is keyboard/vocal, with awesome guitar (superior to this) from Andy Skelton. And John's voice is strong (as it is now, in his sober days)
i tend to think of fripp when i think of crimso, but RED is my fave album, and wetton was a large part of the album (i miss my vinyl copy). sad and ironic that the number of amazing crimso players only made real money outside of the group. greg lake in e.l.p., wetton in asia, belew in session with bowie etc. but one cannot begrudge wetton's willingness to present crimso as part of his oeuvre. better than some tribute band with no emotional foundation doing a clean take.
I have to agree with most of the comments. The guitarist completely overplayed his role. He's trying to be a Steve Vai, which does have its drawbacks. This really makes me appreciate Robert Fripp
Dont know about you guys, but down here in brazil in the 70's , KC only for a few and selected ones , I agree that something doesnt sound quite right but it s fine for me as long as I can hear the real one when I want
Yes, there's a touch of ELP/Asia style bombast to this version, but it is a Wetton composition after all, and the lads all play with passion and commitment. This is not a greatest hits, stadium retread, it's an honest attempt and let's face it, every version of this sorely misses the saxes of Mel and Ian from the original.
Right from the get-go this version is far too bombastic and totally misses the understated beauty of the original. That's my initial reaction at least
btw, is he really John Wetton?

Mr.Wetton does`nt seem to mind the Guitar work at All,I think they bring that song nicely towards the 21st Century. As a Guitar player just working this up with the band,I`m inclined to want a little modernization myself.Very Good Version. ...Mace...
holyjaguar 1 year ago
I didn't mind the guitarist at first, but when the evil/doom part on bass began... well I just slapped myself in the face. why the guitarist changed the original notes Fripp wrote??I just can't stand that kind of people. Fripp made this part even more interesting, more psychodelic and beautifull. On the original recording Fripp played only 2 notes! and he was making more than this guitarist now!
sifstudio 1 year ago
@sifstudio the original KC song is unsurpassed-no doubt about it, but i like this version very much too. The guitar sounds more ''modern'' and i dare say, ''mellower'' here, though not lacking in intencity. Gives a different perspective of this KC masterpiece.
theo9952 1 year ago
You may think the guitarist is absurd, but he's the one on stage playing the tune.
TR shite? I dont hear a bunch of bullshit harmonizers going on. Just a guy pulling a really good tone out of the guitar.
I want to hear Fripp's opinion. Robert, you out there? Any issues with folks playing your compositions?
thesego211 1 year ago
That guitarist is absurd. I agree with the Jamfan100's comment re: Dream Theater. That slick, WD40, Trevor Rabin shite just doesn't do a King Crimson song any justice.

this is not Crimson at all ... the guitar player sucks big time. He is 100000 miles behind Fripp.

Wetton
timberlevet 1 year ago
Decent, nothing special. Low energy for such a powerful composition. The guitarist isn't Fripp, and the drummer isn't Bruford so the shit can't be that great.
Roboman737 1 year ago
Great song, great guitar by John Mitchell - but Crimson's original version from Red or even the one from Live in the USA with David Cross taking the melody on violin will always be the best!!!

It took a while, but it sounds like the Fripptronics effect is in there. Greg Lake had a better voice but this has song always sounded good with John Wetton, even live.

@bruceage9er
The guitarist is actually John Mitchell, lead guitarist with It Bites, one of the finest players on the planet and far, far superior to Robert Fripp in every possible respect. I can't see the keyboard player's face, but by style, genius and the chunky arms and watch, I think it's my old amigo Martin Orford, ex IQ virtuoso.
tonythekingfisher 1 year ago
@tonythekingfisher Ah yes, John Mitchell. Awesome. Thanks for straightening me out on that. I think he is doing a great job on this song. I don't know why all these negative comments about him. He really is a good guitarist. Wetton sounds good. I have always loved his vocals. My favorite King Crimson singer has got to be Greg Lake though. Anyway, thanks for the comment and thanks to the person that posted this vid.

@bruceage9er
I don't like KC much, but agree that Lake was a fabulous vocalist, though Wetton was a much better bass player.
Having just looked carefully, I can confirm that the guy with the baseball cap on keys IS Martin Orford.
John Wetton and John Mitchell also play on Martin's solo album, The Old Road, one of the best releases of the last 10 years.
tonythekingfisher 1 year ago
@tonythekingfisher There's a lot of controversy around Lake and Wetton about who's better bass player/singer. In fact i found they are very similar. But i had to point a winner i'd choose Lake, because is a master with the acoustic guitar.
FonzoTube 1 year ago
The guitarist is really disastrous. He plays too much, not letting the voice sing alone. And then he shows that he does not comprehend what a slow progression is. Where's the need of being original when playing this already great song? He sounds good when he plays strictly the theme.

guitar player simply screws it -.-

Fuck is terrible!!!.
Warlandoz 1 year ago

Nice performance, but pathetic nonetheless. The guitarist sounds like he's trying to audition for Dream Theater.

I have to agree with most of the comments. The guitarist completely overplayed his role. He's trying to be a Steve Vai, which does have its drawbacks. This really makes me appreciate Robert Fripp

MalaguetasSoHigh 1 year ago
Yes, there's a touch of ELP/Asia style bombast to this version, but it is a Wetton composition after all, and the lads all play with passion and commitment. This is not a greatest hits, stadium retread, it's an honest attempt and let's face it, every version of this sorely misses the saxes of Mel and Ian from the original.

Right from the get-go this version is far too bombastic and totally misses the understated beauty of the original. That's my initial reaction at least
TrevRockOne 1 year ago
I agree 100%, as soon as the guitar started wailing it became apparent this this is definitely a bastardized version, even if Wetton is singing.
