  • I Remember Staying Up To Watch This..It Was A School Night! lol...I Loved This Live Performance, 2 Me 1 Of Chaka's Best..& Lisa's Voice Is Amazing @ 1:05, 1:17, 2:25, 3:07!

Lalomie Compliments The Soundscape As Well....

  • Donnie McClurkin's sister "OLIVIA" sang back up for Whitney Houston for a period!

  • can´t touch this!

  • I loved the album this came from and it was mixed different according to a friend of mine who did not care for the mix. Bunny Sigler , a great songwriterwrote this I think. She did a short 'Coltrane Deams' ( using Giant Steps chords)thing with Sam Rivers that was mean and I wished they would have stretched out on that a bit-FC

  • DAMN....this woulda been a hit if Chaka and the band had rocked the tune on vinyl like they do right here.....this is 2 or 3 levels tighter than the album version.....sometimes her shit is just INCREDIBLE....

  • @abernardcorpus Nope WB decided not to promote this project !

  • Stunning piece of music. Chaka!

  • I woke up with this song in my head and no way to hear it...thanks so much for posting. She makes it look easy doesn't she? The Original Diva!

  • CHAKA KHAN WAS THEN AND WILL ALWAYS BE NUMBER 1 TO ME. I LOVE THE SINGERS THAT WERE MENTIONED, BUT THEY ARE NOT CHAKA KHAN AND NEVER WILL BE VOCALLY - SORRY BUT THATS HOW IT IS FOR ME - NO OFFENSE TO ANY ONE ELSE

  • @ebegreg100 Yes Chaka is one of a kind .. but there is a version on YouTube of Lisa Fischer singing her hit song "How Can I Ease The Pain" that is absolutely MIND BLOWING!! She hits those high octave notes with ease. You need to check that one out. Lisa is another female vocalist with untenable abilities who has been overlooked. FYI .. She is also one of the background singers on Luther's Live at Wembley CD/DVD.

  • @OGGilmoregirlz1 And why is this relevant to CHAKA KHAN !

  • @BLAQUEMUSCLE Whoa now!!! Just making statement regarding one of her back up singers whom you introduced on your info of the video. They are all wonderful vocalists!

  • This performance is just SICK. Love her, she is undisputedly the absolute QUEEN of all time.

  • one of the best songs from that cd! all her material is so good! material is as important as execution of the song and she covers all bases!

  • With all that long, pretty wild hair of the 80's, made her look so sexy. Even in 2010. She still my favorite female singer.

  • This is awesome I have always loved it Priase God for the internet so I can see my favorite songs live !Chaka is Wicked in this song!

  • one of the very few chick singers that can literally go from her low register to her highest in a millisecond. And she puts no effort into. Its nothing for her to stretch her vocals in whichever way she chooses. lotta chicks would rupture a tit' tryin to do that. And she makes the ugliest note sound so beautiful....I just love this woman.

  • @MisterCrazyLegs "Rupture a Tit" (LOL!) So True! If They Tried This They'd Hurt Themselves...

  • one of my favorite chaka cuts and one of her best, vocally, tv performances.

  • This was an absolute superb recording. I was jammin to this on my walkman back in the day!!!!!!!

  • I Love Chaka So Much I know her Sister Personally Ima Chakaholic 4 life Its just something about her hair, its full of energy to me Go chaka Love ya Mama Love: Samuel Collie

  • I love the part at 2:27 the song should of have more of that part i n different areas that cool breezy sound i love it! ..and the end is good.

  • Comment removed

  • Nobody does it better!!!! I love you Chaka!!!!

  • This is a damn sexy song and Ms Fischer is such a beautiful match with chaka voice

  • Wow thanks for posting this!! it has alwayz been my fav song by Chaka,

  • Is laLomie Donnie McClurkin sister? The one that died not too long ago of cancer.

  • NO !

  • my bad, she sho looks like her.

  • LMAO!

  • i completely see where u are comin from. i happen to be someone who loves rnb but i also hav a taste for rock. i didnt really like the tracks like earth to mickey eigther because they were mostly pop. what made the album enjoyable to me were tracks like my destiny and soon which were mo rock. i hav 2 admit though warner bros. made a huge mistake in turning away from chakas black audience, we were the ones who had been buyin her material since the 70's.

  • Well it isn't just the horrible songs from Chaka's late 80's period that leave me cold, it's that noisy, irritating 80's electronic production. Casio keyboards, loud synths, beat machine drumrolls and all the other 80's cliches. I guess Chaka isn't entirely to blame for the weak material she was recording at that time. We should take into account that throughout the 80's Pop Radio/MTV basically banned real R&B music from the airwaves. Only a few were able to slip through the cracks.

  • That is true, plus chaka wasnt really allowed to write alot of her music bac then, but yet she had written great songs w/rufus and even a #1 pop hit Addicted to love. and yes mtv didnt play most black music at the time.

  • ARE..YOu...FUCKIN..CRAZY!! The 80s/SYNTH period was by far THE BEST thing to revolutionize and change R&B/SOUL music! I HATED the New Jack Swing period, and the 90s R&B...cause it just made it sound like 70s soul...which is cool, but it's a BORING SOUND! The "noise" of 80s R&B is the core reason why I'm an 80s R&B and old school music fanatic! That sound changed R&B music for the better..and this song was a Top 40 R&B sound cause it fuzed that funk sound with the 80s sound. R&B NEEDED this!!!!!!

  • Whoa! There's so much nonsense contained in your statements that I'm not sure where to start? First off, it's frighteningly obvious that you have no knowledge nor appreciation of REAL MUSIC & INSTRUMENTATION when you state that 70's Soul is "boring" and sounds similar to New Jack Swing! LOL. I never doubted that the synth era changed R&B just as it did every other musical genre. Did the synths & drum machines change R&B for the better? NO! You never stated why you felt "R&B needed the change?

  • I hope and PRAY R&B, and music, GETS BACK to this period! I personally feel the hip hop sound did far more to ruin R&B music. I'm not anti-hip hop, but like all things, it's SUPER SATURATING radio now....at least in the 80s...the "80s cliches" sound were implemented in a way that RAW EMOTIONED is better stirred up in songs....you could tell by the synths, keyboards, and drum machines when the song reached a "high" or "low", combined with REAL singing by a Chaka or an Anita! 80s R&B = GOLDEN AGE!

  • 1 thing we can both agree on is that HipHop put the final nail in the coffin for Real R&B sometime back in the 90's. IMO the 60's thru 1981 were THE GOLDEN AGE OF R&B! The decline started in 1982 (when production costs were cut), continued on through the synth and New Jack eras and was all but dead by 1992 when Gangsta Rap took over. & I'm not anti-synth/drum machine but IMO they sounded better when used with taste & combined with real instrumentation. Anita Baker got it right with "Rapture"!

  • You're both wrong, but not by much. Synths, Samplers & Drum Machines of the 80's did give R&B/Funk a Boost( Prince, Bootsy, Kashif, Chaka Khan, etc..), But what it did more Significantly than anything else was bring down Album Production Costs, just like Digital Recording revolutionized ( & Killed) Studios...Gangsta Rap took over because Major Labels stopped Signing & promoting R&B/Funk Acts in the Mid 90's..that and the "Urban" radio format. Funk ain't dead-MAZE, CAMEO, etc still draw Live..

  • Chaka should have been DOMINATING the R&B charts in the mid to late 80's but the Anita Bakers', Angela Winbushs', Stephanie Mills' & Miki Howards', etc were destroying her with the sort of material that NOBODY can sing like Chaka. Even her former backup vocalists Meli'sa Morgan & Vesta were allowed to OutChaka poor Chaka at that time. Her 1988 LP 'C.K." was much better than "Destiny" but still missed the mark. Poor song selection destroyed Chaka's chances of success in the 2nd half of the 80's.

  • True. chaka is more talented than all of these singers. if she were given better rnb material throghout the 2nd half of the 80's i honestly beleive she would have been given the title "queen of rnb"

  • So true. I enjoy all of the other singers I named. Each of them are great vocalists in their own right but can you imagine if Chaka had gotten the same level of quality R&B material that those other women did? She would've been the Queen Of R&B indeed!

  • Anita Bakers', Angela Winbushs', Stephanie Mills' & Miki Howards' - AND WHERE ARE THEY NOW ? oh VESTA & MeLISSA to. TRUE LEGENDS ENDURE ! AND HER NAME IS CHAKA !

  • LOL. Believe me, I'm not doubting Chaka's legend or vocal prowess by any means! Each of the women I named are outstanding singers in their own right and recorded some great material that still holds up today. As good as they are I prefer Chaka's vocals to all of them. I Just wish that she had recorded material worthy of her talent in the second half of the 80's.

  • "Love of a Lifetime", "Earth to Mickey" and "Tight Fit" were great songs, with a sound that fuzed R&B/funk and synth..and, in my opinion, is of equal quality & Chaka did the RIGHT thing by crafting Destiny in a more synth/rock direction. Made for more exciting R&B songs to be created on the record. As far as those other artists, they ALL are/were amazing vocals, and I don't think the labels PLANNED to make those artists "outChaka" Chaka. They saw success based on their TALENT, not just material!

  • "Love Of A Lifetime", "Earth To Mickey" & "Sticky Wicked", etc HAD NOTHING TO WITH R&B besides Chaka's vocals! Pure 80's Pop/Rock trash that weren't befitting of a VOCAL LEGEND LIKE MISS KHAN! "LOAL" in particular should of been given to Taylor Dayne, Debbie Gibson or Tiffany. "Tight Fit" was a great R&B number for Chaka but only when done live. Compare any of the 2 wonderful live versions posted here on Youtube to the over-produced, electronic studio version with Chaka holding back vocally.

  • It's true that the other artists I named are all talented but YOU CAN NOT DENY CHAKA KHAN'S INFLUENCE on Meli'sa Morgan, Vesta & a host of others! Helen Keller could hear it! Chaka along with Aretha Franklin & Sarah Vaughan is one of the most imitated female singers of all time! And as talented as Anita, Stephanie, Angela, etc are, they wouldn't have been successful recording dross like 'Love Of A Lifetime'. You can be the most talented singer ever but poor material will sink a career!

  • Angela Winbush??????????????

  • @ThorSmith

I don't ever recall Angela and Miki being on the Tonight Show. Come to think of it, neither was Meli'sa or Vesta.

  • @chakafan2

And when did I suggest that Angela, Miki, Meli'sa or Vesta appeared on the Tonight Show? You're confused.

  • It's fun to mention that I accompanied Chaka, her mother & Damien to the studio for this one. There's a 3rd background singer in the booth not on stage name Maxayne Lewis. The rehearsal before the performance was crazy. Chaka had just did the Johnny Carson show. She felt dissed there because Carson was not the host. Later when she got to J. Rivers Show, she felt more respected. her performance shows it. We were in the green room slapping each other while Dr. Khan sung the shit out of this one.

  • Wow! Do you mean Maxayn Lewis aka Paulette Parker of Maxayn and Ikettes fame? I always wondered what became of her after Maxayn broke up and Andre Lewis formed Mandre. I'm glad she was still singing by the late 80's. Why didn't she perform onstage alongside Lalomie & Lisa? Thanks for the tidbits, cleotube.

  • thanks for this extra info Cleo! I knew there must've been an extra backing singer lurking behind the scenes - I thought my ears were deceiving me especially from 3'39" onwards where there is nice vocal interplay between Chaka & Maxayne Lewis, while Lalomie & Lisa repeat the chorus! Fantastic Song. Like the Isley Bros original but this is equally as special!

  • crazy, amazing, other-wordly vocal genius

  • is that lisa fischer on the right (backing singer)?

    I could be wrong

I do like the Destiny album...

  • i like destiny 2, but a lot of chakas black audience didnt cuz it was so diferent from i feel 4 u n aint nobody. the album was mostly rock n pop, but i think if this song was released as the 1st single the album would hav had more success

  • Yeah I think that it is Lisa Fischer over there! Lisa was also a fantastic singer, it's such a pity that she never had a solo career....

  • 2:32 Breakdown!

  • Momma Chaka wasn't playing with the children on this one; then she slid into her comfort zone and it was all over! Ain't nobody like the hig priestess of funk and soul, she got this hands down!

  • Splendid performance! One for the faves;)

  • wow look at lisa fischer!

  • I KNOW RIGHT!

  • the hair..

  • This is jus classic its ashame songs like these r not known a lot 4 being hits for Chaka.

  • just listen to those genius vocal improvs Chaka did on this live version!! only Chaka the vocal genius can execute such feats EFFORTLESSLY!!! she just takes everything to the next level up!!!

  • She went crazy with those notes at 3:17 torse da end

  • It's funny..I've recently begun playing the hell out of this song and in the car I always sing this particular version to the song...I missed this vid

  • Love this song BLAQUEMUSCLE how did you manage to get all this good stuff on Chaka!!!!! Great video5*****

  • REAL TIGHT! ! ! 10*s =)

  • Chaka's amazing! Funky!

  • 3:29 is a c6 in head!!!!

  • although she slid into head here, based on the tone of it she can definitely hit it in mix voice!!! so its official that her full range for NOW is A2-C6!!!

  • is a2 her lowest

  • im not sure..i think she can go lower and higher than that or has done it somewhere.

  • naw thats real SANGING!!! sounded so masterful and effortless!!!

  • she really sounded AWESOME on this!!! wish she had done more performance of tight fit!!
