Funkiest of versions of "Just A Closer Walk" that has ever been played as an extended jazz jam by one 8-string guitarist. If the sound was better it would melt the ears right off your head.
@MrGreenvibrations fanned or multi-scale fretboard is the same thing. Is called mult-scale because each string has a different scale lenght to help intonation. Standard necks has the same scale lenght for all strings. for example: Gibsons have a 24.75" scale lenght, Ibanez RG's 25.5", ESP Stef B-7 baritone 27" ... etc...
I am not a really big fan of his tone. He is very good on this style of 8 string, albeit I prefer Jason Crawford because his tone surpasses Charlie's and he does more jazzy stuff
its because the distance from the bridge to the nut on the lower strings is made to be longer, this makes the lower strings clearer and sound less like a fart :)
because of this the spaces inbetween frets on the lower strings need to be slightly bigger
It's actually something very old. The bandora, a variation of the cittern invented in England in 1562, used slanted frets to maximize the length of its bass strings.
That is true, but, in actuality, the slant is only to maintain it's tuning and tension at the correct measurements. It's the same with Conklin guitars. You can't have a guitar that goes from low B to high A without slanted frets, the tension will not hold, hence the "multi-scale neck" that Novax (in this case) and Conklin use on their extended range guitars, basses, and guitar/bass hybrids :)
hes using a rotary effect. I love messing with those things, you can get some great sounds. and to SirDewAlot...youve just proven you wouldnt recognize outstanding virtuosity even if it slapped you in the face.
lets not forget something here; hes a jazz musician. he has mastered his main instrument. so please tell me, with all the knowledge and theory that i believe that you lack of, explain to me how this instrument is proven to be retarded? he obviously knows what he is doing and he knows why that type of guitar suits him. is it retarded just because it doesnt suit youre playing?
stop jibber-jabbin, get to the point, the fact is this guy is amazing, lets see you play two instruments at once and phrase the notes well even though you are constricted to using the same positions as what the bass note is
This is impressive. Keeping a totally separate bass groove while adding melody is no easy feat, although some foolish people (i.e. Sir Dewdalot) don't seem to respect the talent that this requires. This guy got rhythm.
you're the only retarded thing in this post. Keep it up. You are the last person qualified to give grammar tips... "so not tied 2 the same area of the neck all the time. "
Talk about homonyms...and you don't even know how to use the correct one.
LMAO you're not seriously going to start commenting that I can't write a complete sentence when you can't even take the .34 seconds to actually write the word 'you' instead of 'u' or 'two' instead of 2...keep it up buddy.
Back to my original point...your first post was retarded. You call his playing style a joke, but don't have any videos of your amazing technique that you sure as hell have an opinion on. I love dick cheese people who have stupid opinions about things they can't do.
doesn't turn me on, but you have to dig the technique. i heard him play a standard...stars fell on alabama on a tv show when i was in la this january. in that context, he plays similar to 9 string player . check out michael coppola, flour on the floor, solo guitar.
If I may weigh in on the "technique" thread. Technique is more than just physical coordination. Technique is whatever methods you use to get your ideas out of your head and into the air; and the majority of it is mental. Charlie has hella technique
Why are you hating on charlie so much? I don't understand. He's an accomplished musician, and he's original... and you can't take that away. Stop hating, man. It's a downer.
Technically amazing but the tone on this video sounds horrible, it probably sounds fine at the gig but I like a guitar to sound like a guitar, even an 8 string. cheesy tone is the domain of keyboards.
He's using a Rotosphere for the tone of a Leslie cabinet speaker. Look it up, its far from cheesy. I'm guessing you're against wah and distortion too...
I'm in to metal so Wah and Distortion are absolutely fine by me. I just don't like the tone he has on this video. I'm not against effects but this doesn't sound anything like a guitar and the guitar is a beautiful sounding instrument.
Any effect applied to a guitar is intended to make it less "guitar sounding". In my opinion, its black and white. You either like the use of effects or you like none. In this case he's trying to get the effect of a speaker. He also plays 8-string acoustic. Maybe you'd like that better...
I don't think that's strictly true. Distorted guitar still sounds like a guitar, so does wah, echo reverb, tremelo etc don't really change the sound, they add to it. If this was audio only I couldn't tell it was a guitar. Do you like Stanley Jordan?
The Rotosphere he uses is similar to tremelo. Stanley Jordan is obviously talented but uses too much chorus for my taste. Look up more Hunter clips. Newer shows will have him using distortion...
Just watched him play with a BAnd and Dean Bowman. That tone seems to work well in a band setting, maybe I was a bit quick to judge(?) I still don't like it in isolation, though. Who else you into?
Charlie isn't trying to sound like a guitar. He is using a rotosphere, and his intentions (if you looked into him), are based on emulating the sound of a b3 organ [w/ a leslie] - that which the rotosphere emulates.
Charlie hunter is amazing, and I play an 8 string guitar just like him, so stop hating on his tone... a novax guitar has the best tone of any guitar in existence, and charlie is - undoubtedly - much more accomplished than you. Stop being critical of innovative musicians.
What are you on about? My comment was not cryptic, all I said was "I don't like his tone on THIS video, THIS video, THIS video" and I still don't, I never criticized his songs, guitar, technique, musicality or anything else other than his tone on THIS video. I'm sure the Novak has a lovely tone, I would like to hear it WITHOUT the rotosphere added to it.
