Question to anyone who'd know the answer: once the full reel has been played through... and all tape sits on the take up reel, can that reel then be put to the left... like turning a cassette tape over and play/record on the flip side ?
@kvfive Yes the reels can be swapped round to play "side 2" quarter track reel to reels record 4 channels onto the tape like a cassette tape recorder, but they're layed out slightly differnetly
@calesso I'm not sure if brand new tape is still available, but you might be able to find some new (ok old but never used) tapes on eBay. 7 inch reels with fit most reel-to-reel recorders like the one I have here.
Apparently, the Mk1 was made from 1972-76, and the Mk2 was made from 1976-78.
I'd kill for that cover! I didn't even know they existed, and I've always wondered why they'd leave the front open exposing the heads to dust. I dont even recall seeing the cover mentioned in the manual. I really really want that cover lol.
Thank you for this vid!!! A while ago, I bought the same machine (for a friendly price) but didn't have the the time and knowledge to actually record stuff... The manual didn't really help me... But now I'm going back to work with it, since I finally know how it works!
Thank you so much for your help, I am pretty clueless about these things, so thank you. I really enjoyed your video's and learned a lot from them. I will keep viewing and keep up the good work.
Hi, I'm thinking of buying one of these to record a few of my songs on and was wondering before I buy it how many times can I record over my songs, ie, I'd like 4 seperate tracks for vocal, guitar, bass and drums, is this possible with the sound on sound function, any help would be most appreciated.
@user44448 I wouldnt bother with one of these if you want to do 4 track recording. Even the sound on sound feature can't do 4 track recording. This recorder is a quater track stereo machine, like a cassette you get 2 tracks, and when you flip the reels round you get the other 2 tracks. To do proper four track recording you need a 4 track recorder.
Great to see this, i still have mine in black, and used it a lot for sound effects on my electric guitar.
On a lathe I made a bigger capstan sleeve for faster tape speed, and i remove a steel ball between play and ff/rew lever so now it's also able to play and record while on ff.
Very nice machine and a great explanation of all the features! You sound just fine and explain it quite clearly! I'm off to see episode 2 and learn more! Thanks for the video, I love it.
What a nice AKAI!Those recorders have a good sound, and are good!I liked the way you explained the features on your 4000,great job,AND nice music too! Did that tape come with the recorder prerecorded?
I have the Akai 4000DS MK1. There seems to be no difference between my machine and your machine, except for the input/output connections on the back of the machine, the places whre these are mounted are different.
The Akai is a really nice machine! I don't have the manual and the cover for my machine.
Very informative video my friend! I am looking to purchase this exact model and now I know all about it!
