I believe what you are referring to is the quick tap maneuver. Its a timing trick and difficult to pull off consistently, at least for me. When you are trying to get a piece over to the side that won't quite make it you can tap the D-pad (assuming you were holding it down initially) at the very last moment to successfully place it.
Give it some practice by starting on 19, building a 7 piece wall while leaving a space to the left open for a line.
Jonas I wonder if you could comment - between 7:51 and 7:53, you pull an I block over to the left above a 6 high stack in column 2, and this is something I'm certain I've never succeeded in doing. I noticed that before the block successfully hits the left wall, it is directly on top of the 6th block in the 2nd column in the fraction of a second before. Is there a special tap involved, or are you just holding left the entire time. Could be I didn't rotate quickly enough, or too soon?
A 6 high stack should be the highest possible to simply hold the directional and slide over. A 7 piece stack requires an extra little double tap to get over. It takes some practice to get the double tap going but once you have it in the arsenal you're good to go.
They programmed the game to require fewer lines to get to the next level if you start at 10+, presumably so that it would be harder to max the score out. So far only 2 people have apparently done it.
Jesus, and I thought my score of 100,170 was good. I didn't know what was after the purple rocket (what I achieved looks like a shuttle). That's nuts...
Sorry I doubted the authenticity of this video at one time. The level of 19+ play is truly phenomenal. Having now played level 19 to where I can get 100,000, I realize the true extent of how difficult yet possible it really is. If I hadn't seen vids of people getting to lvl 29 or getting multiple tetrises on 19+, I might not have gone back and given it another try. It's a pretty amazing experience to get a personal best after so many hours of trying.
this is real, just tried it on my nes (a + level). as cheating goes, depends on what you mean. since u start at higher level the points you rack are more. u do need skill to be able to do this, 1 or 2 mistakes and it's over. 2 tetris gives me almost 50000 points but the level stays the same. this would be more difficult starting from zero to get to the amount of points that u have...oh and yes its possible to get past level 30 (not at 18 though), did it when i was 12, later losers
Is Jonas still working on that level 19 max out (that he says he has done)? Has he only done it once still? I would think that if one could actually do that, they would be either the best Tetris player in the world or very close to it. I'd like to see the video of that along with the audio and live commentary. What percent of the time can he get 900k starting at level 19?
it's legit, i've played to level 26, but not with near the score. good job dude. but better switch to TGM3 instead of wasting your time with a slow system. much much more fun.
is this a real or a cheat? not to doubt your skill but at level 17-19 i cant press the button quick enough to get over to the edge above the %70 mark of the screen and i see he does it with no issues, maybe its because i'm running a PC simulator? can someone please verify, get above %70 and try and get the same lateral movement as this guy does, its physically impossible, aside from that the technique is excellent
It's real. I know that at level 18 I can get it to the edge pretty well (can clear level 18 height 4 on B-Type), though 19-28, it takes advanced techniques like the little rotation tricks he uses at level 21-22 to keep the pieces from locking at bad places. Actually, if I'm not mistaken, at 21-22, he was about at the highest point where even those tricks will work.
Tapping the D-Pad is too slow at those levels. You need to hold down the direction you want to move the piece.
The tricky part is, you need to be holding down the direction you want the next piece to go BEFORE it appears at the top. I've never tried a simulator but I'd imagine the game mechanics are similar.
My best starting at level 18 is only 131 lines so far, score was 165833 (got only 2 tetrises). I don't seem to be good enough at this speed to go for only tetrises yet. Level 19+ is too hard for me to accurately control (I can't tap the d-pad fast enough to move the pieces any faster than holding it in would do). :-(
With level 19, its all about learning the limits of how high you can build, and at what height pieces can be moved to the sides. Once you learn to play within those limits, it gets easier. Also, holding the D-Pad is the way to go....the trick is, to start moving the piece before it descends.
Jonas, thanks for your wonderful video and many kind responses in the comments. I've learned a tremendous amount from watching this video (several times over, I might add). I'm sitting at a top score of 718k, which can clearly go much higher, as I didn't even know to start on level 18 instead of 9! Thanks again.
The method of starting at a higher level will rocket you higher in score, I'm sure of it.
Also, I tried recording another video using a handheld camcorder so I can possibly record some of my thought processes. Didn't score higher than 967k all day though. Swing and a miss!
look at his level that he chooses and the level he starts on. he still starts with zero points so it's not an edit. he is cheating. i was hoping to find proof im not the best. his total score should have been in the 300,000 area. my alltime high is 497,000+ level 19 207 lines. i would like to compete but can't find out how.
The fact that you honestly think that the speed at the beginning is level 8 speed (and that you don't know that A+Start starts you at the level you pick plus 10) proves that you're not the best. You don't even know the basics of NES Tetris. If you did, you couldn't accuse him of cheating.
he is playing witha gameshark. the scores and level are set to ten levels higher, but the speed is at level eight. he started on level 18 for christ's sake. how do you do that wothout a gameshark?
How can you call that Level 8 speed? Level 8 speed would allow me to slide pieces over much easier. Please notice how long it takes me to get a piece over to the side and then start on level 18 (Hold A while selecting level 8) to compare the two speeds.
hey t2048, i have one for ya: in ubuntu theres a version of tetris available in the synaptic package manager called bastard tetris or, bastet for short. you play it in the terminal. unlike normal tetris where the blocks come at rndom, this has a special algorithm that determines the usefulness of the blocks and gives the worst ones, so good luck for anyone trying to make canyons one square wide and knocking out four rows wide with the i block!
I remember when I was in my video game prime and I got in the Tetris Zone just like this one time. Only I got one more Tetris after 999,999 and my nintendo exploded leaving 16 bit shrapnel in my right eye. I am right eye dominant so my skills have never been the same. It was all worth it, but ye be warned.
This is fake as fuck...i can't believe people are impressed by this...I've gotten to level 19 several times and my high score is 279734...at the very end of this video is what level 19 really like...i say its fake
I am ready to agree with you. To get to level 29 you should need 290 lines. And as you said, when he gets to level 29, thats how 19 looked to me = impossible.
That is because he starts at level 18. You can do this by holding down the A button when you pick level 8. It adds 10 to the level you picked. When you start at level 18 with 0 lines, then the level changes to level 19 at exactly 130 lines. I have seen it with my own eyes. Authentic NES, not tool assisted, really how they programmed it. try it if you can.
Upon thorough review, I find that it is possible to reach 10 or 11 high on the left wall by holding the d-pad depending on the block and only if the stack is not in the way, so since this video just barely passes the test I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, despite the absense of some tetris flashes and any sound. Well-done. Must have been really sweating it toward the end. Have you not submitted to twingalaxies for the world record? It's not listed.
Look, I'm not the kind to go around yelling FAKE! CHEATER! I'm just having a really hard time believing this video is 100% old fashioned NES playing, for the simple reason that on level 19+, even holding left on the d-pad to generate the fastest possible speed, the blocks can only go about 6 high, and I'm seeing well above that in this video from level 19 to 29. I am really going to need convincing that there is no tool assist here.
Very solid looking play! My only question is why don't you have sound in your video? That would be hard to fake. These videos are making me want to play again. 17 years ago when I was 15, my highest score was around 860,000 so I know 999,999 is possible. That is when I stopped playing. I even had a 750,000ish score posted in a gaming mag as the world record replacing a 350,000 score.
nes console and tetris is on order. If I have time to play, I'll post a vid shortly!
You cleared 999 lines on NES Tetris? I don't know of anyone even surviving level 29 to reach level 30. Jonas gets 233 lines here and got to level 29 where it became impossible to continue. If you were to start on level 0 you would achieve 290 lines at level 29. You're saying that you not only beat level 29 but you got all the way to level 99??? Help me to believe you.
Are you using a joystick or thumb controller? It looks like a joystick since you are pulling down so many pieces. I may need to switch. By the way, nice z-flip for line 16.
I am fully impressed. You have inspired me to play at a higher level than I thought possible. I have picked up two new piece laying strategies from you. Thanks. How do you record your game? I would like to share my gaming skills.
I play on 18 and usually die around 120-130 lines which is limiting my score to around 600,000. What is this "Pole Vaulting" technique you are describing? Do you mean rolling the piece in the direction of movement to the side? Also, on the higher levels (19+) do you tap any pieces over or do you always use the auto-slide?
Jonas do you know about the double-tap? This is something I figured out when running out of time sliding pieces left and right... just as your piece gets 1 block away from the left or right edge, release and tap the d-pad quickly - if you do it right you can save the game.
Apologies if this is already common knowledge, but at around 160 lines, I implemented a technique I call "Pole-Vaulting." By dragging a piece in its original configuration to the left or right while giving it an inverting flip, you can keep it from landing on the middle of your build. It is often necessary level 19 and above when thinks start getting a bit dodgey.
Wow. It looked like you might bite it at 160 lines.. good recovery. You play very gutsy too. Do you pay close attention to the piece count? Or do you just go for 4-blocks at all times?
I'm pretty much going for Tetrises non-stop. If I take lines, its usually to posture for another run at some Tetrises, or to stall for time if my build is getting too high. Past Level 19 I end up taking a lot of lines due to the fact that a building high is too dangerous.
these tetris vids are crazy! I'm pretty sure you have Thor Aackerlund beat, no problem! I've been playing the nintendo world championship ROM lately, but now I just wanna play tetris :)
I believe what you are referring to is the quick tap maneuver. Its a timing trick and difficult to pull off consistently, at least for me. i believe it's real, and it's phenomenal, but i'm just curious why you don't need 190 lines before it switches to level 19.
ARODNMC 2 years ago
Starting from levels 10+ makes it change when you reach 130 lines. Starting at level 9 or below it would be 190 lines before the change.
andrewg1990 2 years ago
If the game allowed me to play to level 18 up to 190 lines, I could score easier and max out to 999,999 almost everytime.
The fact that they handicapped it like this shows remarkable foresight on the developer's behalf.
JonasTeh81 2 years ago

Past Level 19 I end up taking a lot of lines due to the fact that a building high is too dangerous.

nice.... what's your best when you start at level 19?

In the mid-to-high 900,000's. I haven't maxed it out starting at 19 yet, unfortunately.

Correction...as of 4/4/2007 I have maxed it out on level 19 as well...VERY lucky.

Sadly no. But if I did it once, I can do it again. It was really lucky though, gonna take awhile.
