I do remember a different Cap'n Sandy too. He was a "little saltier" looking, like a real captain!!..If this is all we have in existence then, well that's fine.
I worked with this Cap'n Sandy, his name is Tom Even not Norm Strand. Norm was the original Cap'n Sandy and left WSAV to work in Denver. I worked at WSAV from 1960 to 1965 and directed many of the Cap'n Sandy shows as part of the local news block (at that time only 15 minutes total). I broke in Joe Cox who became the best known Cap'n Sandy before leaving WSAV. I worked in New York for 33 years and am now retired living in Florida. Bill Futrell
My father, Joe Petty, doing the voice-over intro as well as the commercial for Savannah Bank. Awesome. I was 7 years old . Loved Capt Sandy weather. This is really bringing back memories!
The man doing the voice-over introduction to Capt Sandy as well as the savannah Bank commercial was my father, Joe Petty. We mover to Savannah in 1963. I was 6 years old and we moved from Wocester, Massachusetts. My dad came from a radio/Newspaper background and this was his first job in television. What a GREAT treat for me as well as my mother and siblings to see this freat blast ffrom the past. The hair on the back of my neck is still standing on end. My dad passed away 11 years ago.
This is not Norm Strand. This is Thomas Even i went on to atlanta and several other stations in my career. i have done many movies with all the stars. today i am in NM running an RV park and apartment complex
@teven70 It was great while it lasted I moved on in 1966 to WLW in Dayton then to WAGA Atlanta Became Executive Director of SAG & AFTRA in Atlanta and after 16 yrs of that I went into the movie business Played in about 30 motion pictures, One U may recognize is Fried Green Tomatos. I played the Judge. Had some great parts and met a lot of the stars.
I'll echo the other commenters and thank W4SGA for posting this clip. I was born in Savannah in 1961, lived there until 1970, and can still sing the Cap'n Sandy theme to this day. As a child, I loved Clamity Clam and the rest of the shtick. When we moved away from Savannah, I recollect being disappointed by how dull the weather report was in our new town. Don't ask me what made me think of Cap'n Sandy and search for this forty years later, but this brings back some great memories. Thanks!!
This was really cool, thanks for posting it. I no longer live in Savannah, and sometimes when the weather here is questionable, my neighbors find me in the yard looking skyward, singing the Cap'n Sandy song. They just think I'm crazy...
Thanks so much for posting this! My mom always told me about it, so I decided to search YouTube for it and found yours! She watched it and says it brought back sooo many great memories!
Thank you for uploading this video! I have been telling everyone for years about Capt. Sandy's weather report and nobody really believed me! I used to sing the theme song for this all the time! I grew up in Savannah and this is an eternal piece of my childhood there. Again, thanks for supplying one of my fondest memories.
Nice wayback moment watching this with my kids. An erasable whiteboard in 1964 must have been something to see. WSAV kept up Captn Sandy on the air into the late 70s.
Thank you W4SGA for this video - it is a treasure. He made the weather report fun to watch for us young'uns. I knew he had to be important because he had his own song.
I well remember this man, I was just a child when i remember seeing him on WSAV in the 60s and 70s long before teh acvent of modern technology, THIS is how it was done, With natural intelligence, charisma and a magic marker, AND OF COURSE, Calamity Clam, Arthur Mometer, And Wilbur that goofy Weather Bird, LOLOLOL, God Bless you Cap'n Sandy, RIP in the Arms of Jesus 12-06-2008.
Not to break the subject, but my dad in Acworth,GA watched Officer Don on WAGA in Atlanta. My dad absolutely loved to watch this show before he moved to Florida. My dad really enjoyed watching a kid finding the ooey gooey bag. I came across this show while I was searching for Officer Don
I watched Officer Don... I can still whistle the theme song but I can't remember where I put my car keys, this morning. I loved the ooey gooey bag segment of the show.
Everyone who grew up in Savannah back in the 60s not only remembers Capt Sandy well but can sign the song. Out of town bands had never seen anything like Capt Sandy, but they'd be sitting around their hotel rooms, see the show, hear the song, and just _have to_ work it up for their sets that night.
You can imagine that once they started playing and singing the song, the home crowd would go absolutely nuts, yelling the song out together with the band, LOL!
This "Captain Sandy" is a man named Tom Even who was also Production Manager at WSAV-TV and later worked on-air in Atlanta at WAGA-TV.
Chances are about 90% that I directed this clip. I directed "Captain Sandy" and the early and late news shows from 1963-1965. My name is Bill Futrell and I started my 40 year career in TV at WSAV in 1960. I'm now retired after 33 years in New York and living in Florida. This clip really brings back many memories.
This is so great!! I used to love Clammity Clam and - if memory serves - every once in awhile he managed to GET Cap'n Sandy!! I also grew up with Joe Cox as the Captain. Can you imagine to day's weather forecasters having to draw in their own stuff?!
An Augusta Chronicle article from 1999 identifies this original Cap'n Sandy as the late Norm Strand. My dad says he took me to the TV studio in '61 when I was 3 to see the show live because apparently I was always singing the theme song around the house. I remember Joe Cox as Cap'n Sandy, though.
Thank you for identifying the mystery Captain Sandy for me as Norm Strand. You are just a few years younger than me. I don't remember this fella. Joe Cox was also the Captain I knew.
Wow! This is sooo cool. I loved Captain Sandy and his friends. Never thought I would see him again. Now I get Social Security. Oh, Jeeze if thre was only a tape of Alan Cook on WTOC Channel 11 saying "Good Evening Everyone, Everywhere" or Doug ? the news bosying "tantamount toe election" after every Democratic primary election , or Cletus Youmans with his pointer doing the "adult" weather report.
I was born and raised in Savannah, and as a child, I LOVED Cap'n Sandy. I used to pretend I was him.
This isn't the one I grew up with, though. I grew up with Joe Cox as Cap'n Sandy. This will do, though. I've been looking for old footage like this all over the place.
I do remember a different Cap'n Sandy too. He was a "little saltier" looking, like a real captain!!..If this is all we have in existence then, well that's fine.

Yo ho, yo ho, what's the weather going to be?
Here's the man who knows, let's take a look and see.
Here is Captain Sandy with the weather he has found.
For Savannah, and for Chatham and the counties all around!

The Cap'n Sandy of my youth (early to mid 70s) was Joe Cox. I loved watching that guy.
Any Savannahians from that time remember Robin Graves, the host of the Saturday Night Horror Movie over on WJCL?
SageOftheSubway 2 years ago
That was "Horrible Movies"
Robin sang a song to the tune of "Wendy" and some buddies and I used to sing it from time to time... what a hoot!
birdebyrd 1 year ago
That used to scare the hell out of me as a little kid. The way they that negative image and that voice. I'm scarred for life.

I too grew up in the 60's. Long before Doppler Radar, this is how they forecasted the weather.
I'm not from Savannah, but was this Captain Sandy a certified meterologist, like many weather forecasters are today?
