Planting the tree's is one thing.... Keeping the weeds and grass cut down will require a mower and mowing weekly, most likely... as well as mulching heavily around each tree'...ensuring the mulch stays 2" from the stems...
before chemical fertilizers, animal poop was one of the basic components of crop fertilizers. i remember local farmers filling up "honey wagons" from decomposed winter "treasure piles" and spreading that odorific stuff over the fields while there was still snow on the ground, so it could filter into the soil while the snow melted. then, they would work the stuff in a few times before they planted seed, and the crops were always beautiful.
Have a read up (and see youtube videos) on 'compost tea'. It helps plants to be more resilient to pests. Plus it helps you grow massive fruit and veg!
Thats not crazy! If I had the room, I would plant all sorts of fruit bearing trees! You couldn't count them all, there would be so many :). More positive power to you!
Hi Matt and Angela! I can't express what a joy it is to watch you create your homestead in Ecuador. I can hardly wait to see each video of what you are doing next! I'm learning a lot! You both are such a gift! Love to you
Will you be needing some physical barrier around each tree, till they get cosy? I was wondering about the horses roaming around and the wildlife? You dont want them trampelled down at all.
So proud of your proactivie common sense approach in getting it all established. :) - Speed and functionability is of the essence to catch the seasons growth :) xx
If you decide to go with manure spray, just make sure you do it a while before harvesting & ask how many times a year the spray is needed, it might be best to listen to the locals way on growing, I think even herbicides can be bad for health, but is another thought, but we do need some insects to pollinate the flowers that turn into the fruit after pollination.I am probably stating the obvious but cant hurt! :)
diatomaceous earth is supose to be helpfull in keeping bugs aways & its really high in silica, but there are warnings to keep it away from flower buds, honey bees are attracted to and not to much on top soil so it wont effect the earth worms, I'm sure diatomaceous earth would probably break down eventually thought. don't get in eyes & its bad to breath silica in Always get food grade diatomaceous earth & it can b mixed with water, I read that dia-earth didnt really help with fleas though.
I was just wondering how it's possible for sugar caneash to retain its minerals and richness since it's been burnt. Food loses it's minerals when it's cooked, how come sugar cane is still "rich"? Seems to me that this is a little condescending. Wondering if you have an explanation, I'd love to know what you think. Thanks =)
what happened to the avocado plant that you started a while ago?
