Hii i need help/advice... my turtle is definitely carrying eggs... her behavior has changed and shes digging /splashing crazily. I have prepared a huge box of top soil and have to take her out of the the tank and let her sit in the soil.... she hasnt laid any eggs.... and shes beginning to bulg around her legs.... am i preparing her nesting spot wrong? i keep the soil warm then cover the box half way to give her privacy. please let me know asap :[ thank you
Does it works for terrapin turtles?? oh and terrapin turtles are land turtles, do they lay eggs in water or land? Do you know how to tell a terrapin turtle's gender??
@Horseridinggirl31 yes it works for land turtles. they lay eggs on land. Go by tail size. the opening in the tail be past side of shell if female. In a male the opening in the tail(cloaca) will be way past the edge of shell.
@Randomaccounttable it just knowing your turtle. Females that have eggs sometime turn aggresive towards you and tank makes, always trying to esacape or restless. Digging with back legs into basking dock.
@DiamondbackTerrapins My mississippi map mated with my friends turtle and were waiting for eggs to hatch so i can keep 1 an dhe wants 1 and well give the rest to a small turtle shop in our downtown area.
@titanic98810 u cant!! u have to keep track, but i know 4 a fact that 4 painted turtles, its mostly about how big the turtle is. check wikipedia for red eared sliders 4 more!!!
@Simon4romDk just put her in the water and when she tries to swim and moves leg you should be able to get in the gap of her legs. Dont try and force to move her legs. Dont work now try again later evntually you will get in there.
@Sebgarcia04 she had way more then 4 eggs, but with feeling you can only feel the first 4 or so. In this case she actually laid all her eggs in the water and then ate them
Actually, I normally hold the turtle facing me, my fingers (except my index fingers) are on the bottom of the plastron, and the index finger is inserted in to the (inguinal pockets) or the folds of skin infront of the back legs, then I tilt the turtle vertically and rotate back down to horizontal and the eggs move against your fingers and you can count two or three on each side. If you count two or three then there are about 5-6 or more eggs.
They're just like normal Terrapins? :S I dunno:p Nah! I'm not gonna go murdering them! I'll probs sell them to a pet shop or something! Yeah.. Now I need to do my research on giving her somewhere safe to lay them! Thanks for your help! :D
My Terrapin has two eggs at both sides of her tail.. She has a male in the tank with her, although i just figured this out! :P Does this mean that she's going to deposit of these eggs? If so, how do i know if these are fertilised eggs? and what will i do with the eggs? or what will i not do with the eggs? Thanks for your help and Video! :)
@Loralockz1 You cant know the eggs are fertilized until egg actually starts developing and the eggs will develope a specific look to it. IF she has most likely she will. If they are red eared sliders and you honestly dont have the space for more turtles, cause remember they dont stay small forever. Just destroy the eggs when she lays them. Otherwise look at my temp. nesting area video.
@ng31200 hmm usually you can feel one bone, but if your feeling two bumps that should be eggs maybe. Only bone you will feel is leg bone and that you will feel on the bottom of your finger
But what if my turtle is too small for me to feel her sides? Shes about a years to 2 years old and I have a male and a female, i have only had them for about 2 months together, but do you think they will start mating? And one last thing, do you know how old turtles have to be before reaching their maturity level? Thank you!!
@thatonechick4444 actually maturity of a turtle has nothing to do with its age. Turtle maturity by their size. The shell of the turtle has to be at least 4inches in size just to sex it then to start breeding a females shell should be at least 5inches in length. IF you can not get your fingers in the side it sounds like your turtle isnt at the 4inch range yet.
@randomrazr well females like that have never had a male usually dont get a full clutch and only get 1 or 2 eggs and if no nesting area is provided they actually can reabsorb the eggs into their system if they feel nesting isnt important. The large female res I had reabsorbed her eggs.
@randomrazr Since it looks liek you keep her indoor really it can be anytime. Thats another reason why you turtle doesnt lay eggs. The temps never change for her to know of seasons.
@DiamondbackTerrapins she knows when its winter cause she sleeps alot lol spring summer shes really active.
and yeah shes indoor alot, i do take her out side from time to time to bask and walk around, but most of the time she tries to find a place to hide lol.
Hey, thanx for the vid. And cute turtle. I have 2 red eared sliders. A smaller one that I believe is the male(4 inches), and a bigger(5 1/2 inches) one that I believe is the female. I think that the female is carrying eggs but I'm unsure. About 1-2 weeks ago the turtle just stopped eating, started basking all day, and sleeping all day. When she used to eat a LOT, bask only a little, and Never sleep during the day, only at night. Does this sound like she is pregnant?
? if you look at the back of the turtle on both sides of the tail, if they are hard and oval shaped would you say that that would be the eggs also? Both of my females have signs of that compared to the males and the girls are exibiting signs of nesting. This will be the 2nd time one of my girls have layed eggs. The first time I wasnt aware of it and the eggs drowned, soooo Id like to try and be helpful with this batch if they are prego. Any advice will help. Thanks!
We don't have a male turtle (two females), and I'm starting to think one of them has eggs, as she has become a lot more active again. Though, that might be because it's spring, I don't know.
Anyhow, if she does have eggs, what do you suggest would be the next best action? allow her to stroll around in the garden (supervised), or put her in a large box with sand in it? Thanks!
@DiamondbackTerrapins Thanks, I'm going to try that then. I'll have to wait for the weather to improve, I don't think turtles like cold grass, or cold ground for that matter. :)
@SteevLao females usually start laying eggs around 3-5years old. They can sometime lay infertile eggs even though they are never in contact with a male
@mrcool1990 turtle eggs are the softest the first 48hours then slightly harden, in res their eggs they never become fully hard like chicken eggs. Where did she lay the eggs?
@imapurplewolf she can but i wouldnt worry to much, if she does produce eggs, she will just lay them in the water. She might never produce eggs. not worth the trouble getting a nesting area

@BlaineHeggie hmm tell you the truth i have no idea how high you have to experiment. I know doing this you have very high chance all eggs will die or get major deformities in shell. That why perfert pastals are so rare
@BlaineHeggie How big is the pastal res? Well to get pastal you incubate the eggs at very high temperatures, so who know knows what is going inside it. Alot of pastals die before adulthood. So it could be sterile.
