RIP Bobby Robinson & Pumpkin. Met them both in Bobby's record store in Harlem back in the 90s. Pumpkin rang up my copies of Heartbeat Rap for me. & RIP Sylvia.
Wow! I'm a Hip-Hop, and I stress...Hip-Hop, not Rap. Old School. Came here specifically for this song, and to read that he passed moved me a bit. Of course I didn't know the man, but I sure as hell grew up on his music, and still own his records. I'm 41, and have been around the music block. R.I.P. Pumpkin, ".....The Allstars need no music. The Allstars need no music...but all we need is Pumpkin.."

TAKES ME WAY BACK TO THE OLD DAYS, 12" record covers taped together for a break mat, a few injuries later it was halfords and a few tags here and there. Used to love Electric Kingdom by Twilight 22, that was probably my all time fave, tho Techno Scratch runs a close second. Who also remebers Mike Allen's show and UK Fresh 86?
i still have my cassette tape of Marley Marl on Mr. Magic show on WBLS in about '83 or '84 where Marley mixed the Art of Noise song Close (to the Edit) with King of the Beat. if anybody remembers that song by Art of Noise or checked it out on youtube then you can imagine how dope that mix was. Marley Marl was certainly ahead of his time and was responsible for some excellent remixes. thanks for posting, GrandMasterGuess. peace
record scratching is the whole reason for hip hop having any originality in the first place; and funk samples were the 2nd best reason hip hop was good at all!
@SamuraiClinton People knew how to scratch musically back then. Today its all crab scratch and nothing else which gets boring even though its a clever technique but overused and no one is putting their stamp on it.
@maccagrabme - I think Premier is one of the last djs who's scratching actually complimented the song rather than disrupt it. A lot of the young heads are too busy trying to show how fast they are.
