  • Does it have to be baby yarn? Can it be acrylic 4 ply? I had an idea to make this into an afghan for my boyfriend for Valentines day this year (2012). I was going to get a red and a white yarn to do it. Also how many squares should I do to make it a normal size afghan? Thank you for doing this video I am a visual learner and videos help me more than the written ones.

  • @NickieS1023 You can use whatever yarn you like. If you use the worsted weight (4ply) yarn You should use a larger hook and the square will be bigger than 6 inches. Why not make just one to try it with the heavier yarn and see how big it will be and if you like it? I chose this lighter weight yarn because some of the participants in the friendship square project live in other countries where the medium worsted yarn is not available.

    Thank you for responding back!

So the bigger the hook the bigger the square will measure. So I could use a I hook as long as I use the same hook through the whole project (the same hook for every square I make). Thank you for your help I am still learning. What is the normal dimensions for an afghan?

  • @NickieS1023 go to Bevscountrycottage website. There is a size chart for blankets. I will PM you with the URL.

  • OMG! i just followed your video and yes i did it. Im so excited. It is gonna be 5am tx time. Mine came out bigger because i used a bigger needle and thicker yarn, but it still looks nice. Thank you so much, very good instructions! Keep doing what you are doing. God bless you!

  • Oh my goodness this is such a beautiful square! i will definently be using it in my next project thank you very much for this tutorial :)

  • Bethintx1 awsome square and great instruccion.Cecysoto56

  • Question: how many squares does one need for a baby blanket and how does one attach them together?

  • @majasmagic There are different joining methods covered in my Back to basics videos. Baby blankets are usually 36 inches. Each square is 6 inches. 6 x 6 is 36, so you need 6 rows of 6 squares. which is 36 squares. You can make fewer squares and add a wide border if you want.
