  • love this guy. he introduced so many of us suburban kids to such a wide variety of music that we probably never would have listened to otherwise. and for that I thank him....

  • prince vs michael

  • ah, 240p... we meet again.

  • There are thousands and thousands and thousands... :D

Thank you SO much mcmorris55 for posting these little snippets of Mojo hosting the MFA. It brings back so many memories of me, with my headphones on in my bedroom late at night so that my hyper-religious parents wouldn't hear me listening to the most awesome of awesome "devil music". I just regret that there aren't (as far as I can tell) any full episodes since each was such an unique aural journey... And I keep on tying that knot, btw..

  • Mojo among others were some of the most Coolest Disc Jockeys in Detroit. WE also had Marvelous Marv, Tiger Dan, Fudi who is still around just like they say it will never be that way again Radio is changed its all about a format instead of Getting in touch with the People as these Jocks did Especially Mojo He couldn,t do todays radio No freedom is allowed Unless he went 2 WGPR its a little emancipation on that Dial Much love to the MFA and Mojo and the Old Days.

  • @hilldjeff Yep, we were riding a funky wave and didn't know that it was about to crash in less than a decade later. Oh, man! I wish I had pressed record on my "favorites" tape when Mojo had the B-52s in the studio and...oh!...Prince! That one was AWESOME!!! Excuse me...I have to take a private moment and boy my head in remembrance of the MFA... Hmm, I wonder if I could still send in that "Self addressed shtamped envelope" and get a member card... But...it wouldn't be as cool, I'm afraid...

  • @CybershamanX boy=bow...boy! ;)

  • Ohhhh...I so remember listening to this as a kid. Loved the Electrifying Mojo and I was a middle class white kid. My favorite saying of his was "If you are at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on".

Lots of fantastic funk-and my initiation to George Clintons "The Atomic Dog" single!

  • that why i love my man the electrifying onefrom your 1fan djiceman in detroit .

  • Big Ups to Mojo....Much disrespect to Coleman young who set a precedence for corrupt politics in Detriot, opening doors for the likes of Kwame Malik Kilpatrick. He was at the end of his rope. Good to see him in prison! That said...lets all tie a knot, and hang on.

  • Oh my GOD!! I so miss The electrifying MOJO!! I have looked for his work/voice for years. Thanks so much for posting. Used to love to listen to Prince, Teena Marie for hours...Still remember flashing my lights (porch lights that is)lol....

  • I can tell you from my travels North America-wide..

no city had the dj-schtick and cpative audience that names like Detroit.

the electrifying Mojo, Dick Purtan, Arthur Penhallow among the Motor City legends.

consider yourself forutnate if you were part of these careers and others there in Detroit.

Im telling you....the best back in the day (late 70's, early to mid 80's) THE BEST

  • I was raised on Chalfonte Between Teller and Turner what yall kno bout that? It was all about Fenkell Ave......Holla!.....West Side....do the Errol Flynn......Lmbo...J

  • "Dude!!! I'm freakin' out here!!!! I can't believe I found this. Mojo was THE BEST Detroit radio manufactured on the 20th century air waves & that's sayin' a lot. I remember one of Mojo's standard quips was...'Are you feelin' zz'd, bx'd or even riffed-off??'. Thanks for this."

  • 7 Mile and Tracey representin!!

  • hold on tight ... don't let go ... don't say damn ... say whammy whoa

  • who remember the master mixes he used to play, numbers and planet rock, it was like a 20 minute song.....extended versions of dance floor and other jams i cant remember right now......remember to to tie a knot and keep on hanging and remember theres nobody bad like you.

  • This is such a big part of my history....GRIM.

  • i grew up on florence between 12th street & log cabin in detroit in the 1970s. mojo was the dj i listen to. he played parliament/funkadelic songs other djs didnt, like cosmic slop & who says a funk band cant play rock. he played breakwater, mystic merlin & lesser known band. and today look what we got for music from these record companies & radio stations, poor images push with poor music as a backdrop.

  • @Earlbein

REPRESENTING THE WESTSIDE GREENFIELD AND GRAND RIVER. THAT WAS TRULY THE SHYT, BACK IN THE DAY.

  • thank you thank you thank you! best evening dj ever! double whammy whoa

  • I lived in Saginaw,Mi and was able to listen to MOJO from time up there. I would be straight amazed. I was like an hour and a half from Detroit. This made my teen years memorable.

  • 6 mile / davison (jos. campau-conant area) what a time, what a life, whoooaaaa

  • There was nothing like the MFA aka The Midnight Funk Association, I still have two membership cards. Mojo was the only dj across the country that would push the envelope of what was played on radio! You could go from hearing Prince, then Pink Floyd back to M.J., onto Queen, then to Rick James all in one night! The battle of the bands was the shhh. because you could pop in a cassette and record all of the songs from both artists!

  • @str8zilla... Stuck here in Columbus, GA since August 10, 1982.... lol.

  • Detroit is Music

  • I'm in tears... I'm almost 44 & the last time I heard Mojo was August 8th, 1982. four day before my 15th birthday.

  • @bkthelegend .....wow mojo went well into da 90's......where u been fool....lol

  • Don't say damn. Say whoa, double whammy whoa!

  • OH!!! FUNK ME!!! I remember partying at belle isle pumping mojo playing the funk.

  • Im a Member & Now Im 42 Years Old. I couldnt go to sleep without hearing this show.Southwest Detroit is in the Building.

  • 35...35...35

    The mental machine...

    Michael Jackson Vs. Prince...

    Damn I'm getting old!

  • I still have my button. I use to tune in from Flint. Mojo was the man! Not Mojo in the Morning!!

  • the dude use 2 control the radio airwaves back in the day. radio wasnt nothing but a party back then lol.

  • Comment removed

  • I need this video!!

  • Bambalamb! MrAlThang was right on the mark as a former Stagg The Mojo on the air meant that the party was about to start and it did! I turned my mothers house into a disco and Mojo provided the sound what a party and a time and today I still rock it this way Bambalamb!

  • oh man..thank you sooooo much 4 this....he is one of the reasons i became a dj...i was kid and i stayed up late 2 listen 2 him...man mojo IS the shit...i had my card and evrything!!! thanx 4 takin me back and puttin a smile on my face

  • omg!! I used to listen to MOJO religiously. He played Prince and Funkadelic on a regular!!! Anybody remember the Wizard? I think he was on fm 98 at the same time MOJO was on.

  • wow! this is rare! got this shit on cassette!

  • This is a trip down memory lane for me.....I remember ALWAYS listening to mojo and the midnight funk in my apt on 7 mile after my divorce....it was the highlight of my week!! If I didn't have a date, I didn't care....I had mojo!!!!

  • OH man!! This takes me back!. Mojo was a visionary. If there is a Radio Hall of Fame in the Motor City, Mojo better in there. This cat made Motor City radio back in the day.

  • This is another example of what made Detroit different than any other city in America. It's the only place where black people had the opportunity to live a middle class life style, on such a large scale. Everyone had high expectations. It was the norm that families owned their own homes, 2 cars and had kids in college. We had high music I.Q.. There was a prevailing positive attitude. Remember Mayor Young in the Mothership with MoJo?

    "Ohh It's All So Beautiful"!

    Mackenzie 75

    yeah boyyeeee!

  • I grew up on 7 Mile and Conant and you are right this is what made Detroit different from other cities. Live in NYC now

  • @ranus69

I hear ya ! I hailed from 6 Mile, a block from the University of Detroit. MOJO was the real deal, every M-F night from 10 til 3 on WGPR-FM.

  • @KOMET2006 .....6mile & Linwood ave here reppn....

  • EXACTLY!!!

  • @MrAlThang What's up Stag!!!! Mackenzie 85

  • Anybody remember Electrifying Mojo, Midnight Funk Association in Ann Arbor WAAM on Packard rd back in the day.

  • MFA...turning my porch light on....we need this back....

  • Awesome, thanks for posting!

  • Let me tell you how much I listen to MoJo,

Every damn night!!! I had to because I worked at Bank of the Common Wealth in downtown Detroit. Working the midnight shift on Fort and Griswold. Heard every single show! I would take my lunch brake at about 1am to go over to Wgpr station and say hello to my main man. Also check out RJ Watkins from time to time. Boy did he have a lame ass talk show, LOL.

3 people as his audience but the laugh track made it sounded like 75. To funny. Those were the days.

  • I remember listening to MOJO playing Prince's whole album and he would fall asleep and the air would go blank...anyone feel me?

  • @TheShubbard i remember those nights

  • Wow, i remember getting my ass kicked by my moms for sneaking out the house to go on MOJO's bob-lo boat ride, which got canceled. I had to sneak in the house early and got caught.

  • Me and my friend Jeff Spears use to tape every show!!

  • If you and your friend still have copies of the shows, I would like to get a copy or listen. - B

  • oh man when they played that superman music i knew this was THE ELECTROFYING MOJO!!!!!!

  • Yeah, we had him; the electrifying MoJo...And he was such a tiny, lttle ugly dude, with all that greasy jeri-curl...hahahaha but MAN OH MAN, he had a helluva DJ bass-tone voice, didn't he? One funk under the groove!

  • Everybody and they're Mama ran in the crib to tape MoJo! I remember having the LL Cool J radio outside and dancing under the streetlights some of his mixes! Good time! Cooley Class Of A-D-6! (86')

  • Wow, this takes me back. This stuff is priceless.

  • A few weeks ago Techno DJ Carl Craig spearheaded a tribute to Mojo at the Taste Fest. Since not too many people know what MoJo looks like, he may have been there.

  • My God I can't thank you enough for posting this. I didn't know how good I had it back then. You bring back some great memories. I've lived a good life.

  • thank you 4 posting mojo

  • This is the shit. I grew up on Mojo and very much miss this stuff. Thank you for posting this.

  • "The Mother Ship Has Landed"

  • Thank You for posting this! There has never been and will never be any better radio than The Electrifying Mojo!

  • Mojo at night and anyone remember Tiger Dan in the afternoon on WGPR?

  • I call myself an objectivist and a modern thinker mostly because this Prince among Men had the audacity to break the mold of a common radio DJ. Mojo was a visionary. God Bless you man and thank you where ever you are. You inspired our whole "lost generation" to think beyond our circumstance and to dream of bouondaries FAR beyond Detroit.

  • THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! For posting this on you tube this brings back memories its not like today radio shows which sucks now thats WHY some people dont listen to the radio no more. Thanks to Mojo and the music he played it was so diverse and culturally motivated that is why still today my music in my CD collection is a wide range of music. THANK GOD FOR MOJO AND HES MUSIC. WE MISS U AND LOVE U. :-)

  • Oh Yeeeaaah! Wow, you have blessed me by posting this! The Electrifying Mojo was a HUGE part of my musical education and helped sustain my diverse taste. I appreciated how radical he was. He had the big balls to not succumb to the dogma of every other station but play music because it was "good". I was the "Purple Lady" and got my fair share of shout outs. I enthusiastically flashed my lights and honked my horn on cue as I cruised around Detroit. Ahh, the memories this brings back.

  • There are NO on-air personalities like this on radio now!

  • Sad, to say no there aren't. I remember being in Cali, and people asking for cassettes of his show; because, not even LA had DJ's that possessed such On-Air charisma, and creativity as TEMJ. TEMJ, and The Scene aka TNDS aka Contempo helped make Detroit unique. I used to really get a laugh out him talking about midnight Boblo cruises, that was hilarious.

  • Awe maaaaan! Are you kidding me?! Who posted this? I remember THIS one fo'sho'! I was actually in bed listening when he said, "if you're in bed... smurf on your back." and I damn near lost my mind! Lol! Wow!!! I told my 16 yr old son about this years ago, and he finally got a chance to hear Mojo say it... tonite! 24 year later. You don't hear me doe! Thanks for the post!

  • Interesting comments guys, I too know how it feels to loose a DJ that I once Loved who is no longer on the air :*-(

First time i ever heard of this guy, but his speech def. pumped me up...

    show solidarity to the MFA!!!

  • Where not worthy Mojo where not worthy. The MFA was the greatest thing.

  • I'm a Detroit girl living in the South now, but boy was it good to hear MFA, and the electrifying Mojo. I used to say Mojo is a Prince groupie because he played Prince so much.

I used to wonder "Mojo, what the hell did Prince do to you, and how did you get that Rasberry Beret album to play it before it was officially out".

Hell by the time it was released, we knew every song by heart. Miss you Mojo, miss Detroit too, hope they get things worked out. Thanks for the Post.

  • I miss Mojo so dog on much!!! He's like a favorite Uncle that moved away. The best parts of my youth were spent with Mojo. I remember cruising Jefferson in gridlocked traffic after we'd been put off Belle Isle one hot summer night and Mojo heard that Jefferson was packed, he got on the airways and said party right there. The next thing I knew people were pulling over and getting out of their cars and we turned Jefferson into The Strip with everybody blasting Mojo!

Did I mention, I miss Mojo?

  • OMG! You shaped my youth, Mr. E. Mojo. I want more, more, more!

  • I wish more people could have heard him back in the mid 80's. He played EVERYTHING, not just one thing. He introduced me to alot of great music.

  • It's true what they say you cant go back but man do I ever miss this man. I remember listening in my bedroom way back when I lived at my parents house. On the radio driving around in my first car. he moved from WGPR to WLBS and even did some time on WHYT. Never knew just how lucky we where to have this. I used to love how he would call out to the eastside, westside, downtown areas pulling all of Metro Detroit into the mix. I wish I would have known enough to tape some of his shows

  • Mojo went from 107.5 to 97.9 to 96.3, back to 97.9, and finally 107.5; then Bill Clinton killed Detroit Radio. Now, we must listen to Atlanta Radio in Detroit...Save your cassette tapes, 'cause they're priceless!

  • Mojo kicked everyone's but in the ratings because management let him do his thing. None of that boring repetitious format garbage. Mojo would play 30 minutes of Prince followed by the B52s and come back with the Brides of Funkenstein. He was all over the place and Detroit loved him because it was all good music. I'm sure other DJs had to jealous he had so much freedom

  • WOW! Now that was and still is the man, wherever he's at. MOJO fo-life. He introduced Prince (the purple one) to Detroit.

  • Thank you! I just learned about Mojo tonight from a friend who grew up in Michigan - this is the only place I could find archives longer than a minute. Really appreciated.

  • Hey, does anybody remebers the "Numbers/Planet Rock" mix the MOJO used to do? Would anybody happened to have posted it?

  • I remember that mix, that was one of the best mixes out there, when i used to explain it to people no one could understand unless they listened to it, to this day, i think that is one of the best mixes

  • It is my contention that Prince would never have been a huge star without this guy. Prince hit in Detroit in the late 1970s (well ahead of the rest of the country) and that was largely due to the machinations of this cat. He would play hours of Prince a a time.

  • Agreed.

  • I remember the first time that I heard "Soft and Wet," of course played by Electrifying Mojo. I was like, WTF!!!

  • Ok my bad, it was just the pledge bit. Any help finding that session would be great

  • Hey I first heard this a couple of years ago on a download I got of Steinski vs someone else (can't remember who) playing a Breezeblock session on BBC Radio 1, since then my hard drive got wiped and i lost all the sessions, I don't suppose anyone knows the one I'm talking about? If anyone has it drop me a message!

  • Thanks so much for putting this up on youtube. More people need to be exposed to this stuff. Damn! The true essence

  • I want to thank my brotha Mojo for opening me up to ALL kinds of music back in the 80's. I heard he maybe coming back on XM radio soon. I hope it's true...

  • Yes! I had a membership card for the M.F.A.! Memories!

  • Mojo update....I want to thank all of you for the comments of support, I'd like to inform you all that in the near future there will be more Mojo clips coming your way. I have located a Mojo fan in Kansas, he informs me that over the years during his visits to Detroit he took the time to record several Mojo broadcast. He has offered to share these broadcast. They are enroute. The Funk is due to arrive this week. I will post them A.S.A.P. Stay Tuned, and May The Funk Be With You Always!

  • I'm an old time Detroit and I used to listen to Electrifying MoJo and Tiger Dan when they were on WGPR and their sponser was quality discount furniture. We used to like to hear the mother ship arriving and departing. Thanks for the memories. We now live in Texas and are still under the funk.

  • Don't forget Marvelous Marv - he's maaaaaaahvalous!

  • The Marvelous One took the "radio voice" to the extreme.

  • Man oh man! Just liesening to this brings back memories. Mojo was the best dj ever to grace the radio. The man is bad. 107.5fm. Hot damn givin me goosebumps just thinkin bout it lol.

  • "And when you come to the end of your rope, don't slip off. Tie a knot and keep hanging on!"

I still tapes of mojo and "the wizard of 98 fm WJLB"

  • Mojo is definitely the sh**!

I was and am not from Detroit, but had some friends there that I visited often. I have several cassettes that I've recorded featuring The Electrifying Mojo! They are still some of my favorite things to listen to. I am trying to find a good way to digitize them! Thanks for posting this clip! "If you feel overwhelmed by the sound of music, don't say damn, say wo! I AM M O J O !!!!" Good sh**!

  • Ahh.. the mothership arrives again...

  • Thank You,you now have a new friend for posting this.Nothing but memories ,thank you!!!If you are not from the D you could not possibly understand!!!!!

  • I hope everyone has enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

  • Thank you McMorris55 for posting this classic piece of MFA history! I loved listening to MoJo back in the day. He was (is) one of a kind!

SparkyBlueFox bows to you and to "MoJo" !

  • Thank u so much 4 posting this. I LOVED Mojo back in the day. I got a chance 2 meet him in '92. Thanks again.

  • wow

  • This really brings back some memories...Thanks for posting.

  • We used to recite the MFA pledge with Mojo every midnight. Mojo only allowed himself to be photographed in silhouette. Also he was one of the few people to interview Prince (back in about 1983 -1984).

  • From April 1977 to March 1987 Mojo was the SHIT! You notice when he went off the air in 1987 the radio stations started to pump the bullshit. He came back briefly in the 90's
