hey, Esperanza, do you realize that you played for the Nobel War Price ? As writen in "1984", these words mean the opposite of what they really mean !!! Barack (as G. W. Bush) makes war everywhere on the planet ! I hope you know, i hope you'll refuse next time! (sorry for my english)
Esperanza, you're like an angel, thank you for your music!
This song is very powerful in this message. I wonder if it was written for President Barak or with him in mind so many powerful statements made "The road to peace is endless and the journey with open eyes is how will mend this"
I suspect the politicians you're referring to fully understand the issues, including the complexities of trying to keep people on both sides of the difficult issues from coming to fisticuffs. Imagine how difficult it would be to have 49% of the people hating your guts, and 51% thinking you could do no wrong. How long could you withstand it until you lashed out at the former? As for their understanding jazz; that's another matter.
политики сидят со скучными минами и нифига не понимают. А жаль... может это помогло бы им измениться.
Politicians sit with their boring faces and looks like they understand nothing. Because they just can't. It's a pity ... maybe it would help them change.
this woman's raw talent has just DESTROYED me...! low on money right now, but i am getting an album, oh.... YESterday. i want to watch another vid of her, but i don't know if i can handle it right now!:^D i thought that the Letterman clip that i watched before this was mindblowing. then i saw THIS.... little girls of the world? Esperanza Spalding is who you want to grow up to be...!;^)
@lllllllllllllll88 A lot of people sing with a bass guitar, Paul McCartney from the Beatles,Geddy Lee from Rush, lead singer from Blink 182. But Esperanza doesn't play guitar, she plays the acoustic double bass.
The drummer for this performance is Lyndon Rochelle. The Pianist is Leo Genovese, who is currently touring with Esperanza. This is live performance in Norway at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony.
That is not Otis Brown on this performance. That is Mr Lyndon Rochelle. He played with Esperanza for the majority of the time she was at Berklee and after. He is one of the best drummers that I've ever heard.
i love the inflection of her voice, how she accentuates certain words in each line make each song an experience. She creates this emotional connection with the listener (at least me) that make every line come alive inside of you.
I love her style, sound, character, etc. This is my favorite song by her but I just wish there was a slower version of it like this available to buy. Anyone resting on her is missing out. She is definitely here to stay not only in the jazz world but in music period.
why is her voice expressing a deep experiences of life.....even though i don't know the lyrics I still can clearly hear a story, a story with feelings flowing so naturally. 'm encouraged by her bird-like singing, with joy and hope and passionate about life!! Thanks God
They didn't give Dubya a Nobel, not because he liked to start wars to hook up no-bid contracts, but because he would have had Toby Keith playing the event. lol.
@rsimmonswk The crowd was only "dead fish" because the ceremony isnt one where you can hoot and holler just because Ms Spalding is performing. Many of them are probably members of her target audience. A lady Gaga concert you get excited and party.... When listening to Esperanza you WANT to put your energy into listening
white conservative aristocrats have no room in their hearts for jazz, its all taken up by the yearnings of greed and self glorification. Never seen people so unmoved by something so incredibly moving in my life.
could someone help me with the name of this song? pleaseee, it's a masterpiece! I had it before but i dont remember the name and i couldnt find it in my library! THANKS!
I have seen Esperanza live a couple of times ...but THIS is my favorite performance by her (so far)! I don't recognize the pianist and drummer though. Can anyone tell me who they are and also if this is part of the Nobel Prize ceremony in Norway?
@inflames: thank you for being willing to have an open mind. when you only listen to one type of music, you definitely miss out on all that's out there.
i like ms. spaulding, and i also like some metal! and punk, and country, and classical, and....LOL!
A collaboration between young jazz trumpeter David Dunbar (google) in Denmark and Esperanza would be off the charts. He is also host of the Maddog and Dave TV show. They could be called The Essie & Dave collabo.
Music appreciation...give it a chance. I've been listening to her since 2008. I saw her first on David Letterman. Listening to her is like riding a bicycle on a cool, crisp spring morning! Aaaaah! Gotta love it!! A collaboration between young jazz trumpeter David Dunbar (google) and Esperanza would be off the charts.
PS, She also sang at Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for Pres. Obama in Norway.
I'm a very closed minded person. I ONLY listen to metal. For those who don't know what that is, very, very heavy, very fast, and very angry lyrics. Lots of swearing usually. But, this song is still amazing. Nice to see what I've been missing out on all this time.
@inflames255 That's because you have a connection to true art. Just because it's loud and obnoxious and very fast and offensive doesn't mean it's not reaching the audience it was designed to reach and communicate the life giving enrichment and power in the tool of music.
Music appreciation...give it a chance. I like Webbie also, but i've found there should also be a balance. I saw her first on David Letterman i 2008. Listening to her is like riding a bicycle on a cool spring morning! Aaaaah! Gotta love it!! PS She also sang at Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for Pres. Obama in Norway. She is a "Bad Chick" in more ways than one.

President Carter got the peace prize too. You know Obama was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize twelve days after taking office. Upon acceptance of winning it, Obama was praised by the committee, "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy". . They also gave the peace prize to Yasser Arafat, the leader of the PLO, the best known terrorist organization on the globe. This is like giving it to David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the KKK.
oooh man she played in front of obama, i would of been soooo nervous lol she such a great musician and has a beautiful voice her and lalah hataway should do a song
love miss spalding! but barack obama got nothing to do there. the nobel prize also include a peace prize and i dont think that a president that´s throwing a war against other countries can qualify to have the right to be there. go home fucking asswhole! come back when you are solving your countries problems without war.
Let's keep in mind that Mr. Scumbag, aka George W. Bush is the one that started this and that President Obama is not entirely faulty for being unable to resolve a complication so quickly. So lets not be so quick minded if you please.
@musictelevision Sometimes the prize is given for a body of work (Doctors without borders, Jimmy Carter), sometimes to encouragement to continue on a path. That was the case with Rabin, Perez, and Arafat in 1994. They had begun the peace process, and the committee wanted to encourage them to continue the peace process.
The peace process was sabotaged by Sharon bringing armed troops onto the Dome of the Rock. It was an election year provocation that started another round of violence.
the nobel peace prize ain't no joke and both the choice of the committee who elected him as that year's winner and that his choice was Esperaza Spalding singing this song in particular speaks volumes.
peace, love and groove that's "real" IS ... it don't have to be labeled its just the god's honest truth in the artist's eyes thus real.
It is exceptional artists such as Esperanza Spalding who are able to articulate the human condition so well
@iowarican - The U.S. is still a war mongering, interventionist, imperialst nation under the leadership of the the supposed Peace Prize winner. Dropiing bombs of benevolence all over the Middle East.. God bless Esperanza for challenging the leaders in the audience when she sang the line "I Almost Believe". She obviously had not completely bought into the hype. Good for her. She is a thinker, not a sheep.
i hope you find peace, i concentrate on peace and feel no need to discuss how this country has been in the war business for many years before he was president or how it was the former president that started the current conflict. I believe in peace and hope i always will. god bless you and no doubt god has blessed esperanza spalding, the beauty of her humanity speaks to my belief.
more like Nobel piss prize as they give their prize to the none-deserving! good stuff though

It is exceptional artists such as Esperanza Spalding who are able to articulate the human condition so well
she also gets 5 stars from me.

@musictelevision
i hope you find peace, i concentrate on peace and feel no need to discuss how this country has been in the war business for many years before he was president or how it was the former president that started the current conflict. I believe in peace and hope i always will. god bless you and no doubt god has blessed esperanza spalding, the beauty of her humanity speaks to my belief.
Peace!
