@AnimatedKestrel what? In NY it takes a year to apprentice a falconer and then you have to prove to the state for a year that you can properly take care of a kestrel or RT and then you get your full license.... I'm sure you are unfamiliar with this process....
@scottkjr that does seem to be the standard for most states in the US. I have never heard that if you 'know a lot about falconry' it'll cut your time down by a year... usually the state adheres to federal acts as well.
I live in New Jersey and I used to count them on my way to school as a kid. They're almost as common as turkey vultures here and red tails are one of the (if not thee) most common raptors in the USA. Some even live in New York City!
There's one living on parking lot pigeons at the supermarket down the street from where I live not nine miles west of the George Washington Bridge!
In the USA when one wants to become a falconer you have to chose either a kestrel or a red tail hawk.
EVERYONE gets footed. It's a thing that happens sometimes no matter how long you've worked with raptors just like getting stepped on by a horse for horseback riders. Don't be so high and mighty! What he got was nothing! She barely grabbed him. It was probably more startling than anything.
Anyway, nice job young man! What a beautiful dark bird!
Where do you go to get ur permeant to keep one of these bird?
