They have their own monasteries in India. There is no general ban.
There is no violation of human rights. Amnesty International dismissed these claims 1998. Delhi High Court dismissed DS Devotees charges april 5, 2010.

I find it sad that a bunch of western practitioners have made it there cause to fight the Dalai Lama on what he has requested of HIS FOLLOWERS. What I don't understand is the "spreading Dharma together" idea put forward on the DS.com website - it never made any sense to me. @wisdombeing good point! The central text of the gelugpa school, - LAMRIM CHENMO, authored by Tsongkhapa - drew from all existing schools of buddhism and even the Indian masters. So how can they be against other schools? That's like going against your own parents... it's not logical. Tsongkhapa and DS promote all the same qualities and teachings as other schools: the pure dharma that is traced back to Buddha Shakyamuni.
This deity, Dorje Shugden is the same nature as Je Tsongkhapa they are the same person performing different functions. Many Dorje Shugden sadhanas state that Dorje Shugden is the embodiment of the Guru, Yidam, and Protector, where Guru refers specifically to Lama Tsongkhapa.
Thus, many cannot accept what Dalai Lama is saying about Dorje Shugden when there are so many evidence pointing to Dorje Shugden's enlightened nature.
@TheDharmaKnight there's been many highly attained lamas such as Trijang Rinpoche, Zong Rinpoche, Lama Zopa who practised DS and recognised his enlightened nature. Even Dalai Lama himself recognised DS as an enlightened being in his earlier years. Can all these lamas be wrong? Their own enlightened & highly beneficial actions for others is already proof that their practice of DS was not a bad thing but brought a positive and very dharmic result.

Pabongkha gave the Gelug sectarians a Gelug protector last century. He claimed that DS was a Buddha and his students believed him. It´s NOT Tsongkhapa´s tradition. Shugden embodies the sectarian belief that other Tibetan lineages should be destroyed. NKT students don´t know this. But most Tibetans do.

The Lama's of each individual school encourages pure authentic practice of their lineage teachings. I don't think and I've not heard of any Lama encouraging their disciple to run from 1 school to another different school to get teachings do they?
Non-sectarianism is not about confusing the traditions. With non-sectarianism you´re allowed to learn from other schools, it doesn´t mean that you have to.
The most outstanding Tibetan master of the 20th century was Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö. He had authority of ALL traditions and was a holder of all lineages. A non-sectarian.

If Shugden was sectarian, surely the Nyingma Lama would not allow them in.

I do not wish for the Dalai Lama to pass away. Everyday i pray for his long life. However, his death - like all of ours - is inevitable. Whether the ban goes because of the Dalai Lama's death or other reasons, the ban will be lifted - it has been predicted.

This is what it means to really stand up against the ban - instead of just protesting and making noise, Penor Rinpoche does something direct, tangible and effective to help those who are being ostracised, attacked & who are suffering. His actions reflect real Dharma which is to relieve the sufferings of others.

There is a danger you know, that you create the karma to abandon any practice you are given. why?

Even to you one day decided to quit practicing Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden will not harm you. It is just your bad karma that will over flow that was once held off by Dorje Shugden.
That is how kind and compassionate Dorje Shugden is. A compassionate enlightened being would never advice anything negative, even towards HH the Dalai Lama.
Being Buddhist is about contemplation, creating peace and harmony, isn't it? It's not to do with politics or geography, nationalism or anything that divides. Dorje Shugden has never encouraged any negative behaviour or attitudes, no matter what others say or do about him. His actions speak louder than words.
What is coming out of this ban? The camp is still split into two but the time will come when the practice will unify all practitioners. The time is not yet right but believe that the time will come when this practice will be BIG.
Wouldn't our time be more worth while spent on studying instead of campaigning that DS is a spirit. On what basis does anyone have? There are so many masters who have reincarnated back again and again who are practitioners of Dorje Shugden.

Whereever HHDL goes, there has always been good media coverage. Now with the ban on Dorje Shugden practice, the coverage has increased. He seems to be a walking one-man advertising campaign for DS and he is doing a great job!

I think it is possible for us to have mutual respect for both dorje shugden and dalai lama. That is entirely possible because both concern Dharma and practices/teachings. This applies to DL supporters and also to DS supporters.

In any case, how qualified, attained or enlightened are we (as simple laypple) to be able to judge the lamas?
I understand why you people are protesting but it is not necessary to say such words about the Dalai Lama. Instead of saying "Dalai Lama stop lying" which is extremely derogatory, why not say "Dalai Lama lift the ban" which has more effect in the global view (bans are very unwelcome in modern society which will attract the attention of world leaders more)
And it does still draw people's attention. They'll think, "What? That monk? The smiling one? He has banned something? But I thought he was a Buddhist!" It's still equally as effective but it doesn't antagonise his devotees. Isn't that a step in the right direction, to open dialogue? If the Dalai Lama doesn't want to talk to DS practitioners, maybe some more open-minded devotees will. Screaming at each other achieves nothing towards an understanding of each other's point-of-view.

If you believe that Dorje Shugden practice is beneficial to you, then by all means continue. It has not brought you any harm. It is your choice if you want to continue or not but if you sincerely believe in Him, then you should not abandon him.

According to His Holiness the Dalai Lama every student is responsible for checking the gurus instructions against reason and Dharma. The rationalizations that many students tell themselves in the face of odd guru behaviours
It's not just HHDL who says that, but every teacher. And if a teacher tells you otherwise, then you should wonder about their motivations. If any teacher, or any deity, tells you to just follow blindly, then they may be doing it for their own gain. HHDL doesn't do this, and neither does DS who always tells people to respect HHDL despite the many negative things that have been said about him (DS).
Correct. What HH said is correct, that every student is responsible for checking the gurus instructions against reason and Dharma.
But once you have chosen your Guru, then you should have faith in him. For example, I am not a student of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso but I found his books very logical and makes it easy for me to understand. So his book Heart Jewel that talks about the protector Shugden and promoting it, I totally agree and think it is trustworthy based on logic.
I don't think it's actually that difficult to respect all gurus, because all gurus promote the dharma and all dharma arose from one source, Buddha. If you truly understand the dharma, you'll see that the teachings from guru to guru don't differ at all. Therefore even if you have one guru (for example, GKG), you can still respect the teachings of another (for example, HHDL) because they are the same.
It must be a teaching or Its crazy wisdom that you cant question or Its a test - serve only to damage students who dont understand that even powerful teachers have personalities that sometimes have blind spots and make mistakes. H.H. the Dalai Lama speaks strongly on this topic in this excerpt adapted from The Path to Enlightenment
Likewise then HHDL may be making a mistake about this ban. HHDL changed his mind about banning travel to Taiwan, he can change his mind about this. Likewise, if HHDL could change his mind over a practice that even his gurus engage in, he can change his mind again later. So what's the point of getting so angry over it, when it could be a mistake at the end of the day?
The comments posted on the forums have turned into nasty name-callings with some people resorting to profanities. This is not healthy at all. There is no respect. It has turned into a site for some people to express vulgarities.
It is easier to resort to name-calling and profanities than engage in debate, because people are afraid it exposes their lack of knowledge. And when it does expose their lack of knowledge, people are afraid to say, "Okay, I was wrong, let me learn from this." Not all forums have denegerated into name-calling though - the one on dorjeshugden{DOT}com still tries to keep a moderate, educational line.
But you, lack of respect is what has led to the issues surrounding the ban. Lack of respect for people's personal choice of practice, lack of respect for people's accomplishments. Whether DS people like it or not, HHDL has connected hundreds of thousands of people to Buddhism and he deserves respect for that alone. Likewise whether anti-DS people like it or not, DS has helped countless beings to spread the dharma - just look at how successful lamas like GKG and Gangchen Rinpoche are.
Gangchen Rinpoche, for example, runs a healing centre in Kathmandu. How could you argue that is anything but beneficial or good? Gangchen Rinpoche heals people whose own governments should be taking care of them. If people want to criticise him and his practice, let them accomplish the same as him before they judge his methods.
I don't understand why we have to be "on one side" or another. Why do we even have to pick? just respect all.
We can choose to follow certain practices or teachings OR we can also choose not to. But that doesn't mean we should go around bitching and putting down "the other side." Just do your own practice, transform ur mind - that's the best way to reflect your teachers, deities, protectors, etc etc!

You have a point though, if everyone respected practice as a personal choice, there would be no problems. We're all responsible on our own paths to enlightenment, and all responsible for our own karma. If people want to give up DS, that's their choice and I hope they do their other practices well.
If they want to believe that practising DS is detrimental and will lead a being to lower rebirths, then it's those practitioners' karma to bear (though I don't see how 'lower rebirths' is a valid point if lamas like Trijang and Zong Rinpoche's reincarnations have been found and recognised by HHDL).
If people want to keep DS, that's their choice and I hope they repay their gurus' kindnesses by doing their practice well to preserve the lineage.

There's a good post about this on dorjeshugden{DOT}com about compassion for one another. Called "Contemplate this", it reminds everyone to follow the Buddhist practice of compassion. The first line reads, "Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Invite them, teach them, slowly and give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the practice assuming it is wrong. Wouldnt that be a Buddhistic approach to all wrong-doers?"

floating - i don't know the Dalai Lama well enough to judge whether he practises Buddhism or not. This issue of Dorje Shugden practice has been fought over for so long - whether he is a spirit, whether he is sectarian. And so many people have opinions without much knowledge. I strongly recommend reading more about DS before you decide. There are many websites with info. just google for dorje shugden. Learn. Read. Contemplate.
The Dalai Lama is playing politics with religion... a "child" can see this. He hangs around with Hollywood celebrities, visits prime ministers and presidents, slaps his face on just about every book westerners write about Buddhism... but does he practice what Buddha taught?
When did Buddha ever teach politics can solve your problems... please show me the Sutra! He never did. Yet what is the DL doing? He tries to use politics to solve his country's problems... Is this a "spiritual" leader?
Buddha's teaching can be used in every aspect of life, politicians are human beings too, if we had politicians with spiritual values the world would be different. What you are doing is also politic, however worshipping spirits is not Buddhas teaching, especially a spirit who does not allow to receive teaching from other lineage.
Actually, it is not spirit worship because he is not a spirit. To say that it's spirit worship, is to say lamas like Trijang Rinpoche (HHDL'ss own guru) engaged in spirit worship. Even HHDL himself practised DS. As HYT masters, all these lamas control spirits, not worship them.
DS is not a spirit because you cannot bribe him to help you - just check out his sadhana on dorjeshugden{DOT}com and you'll see he does not insist that you pay homage to him before you gain the benefits of his practice.

Hehehe I think it is their own karma they should fear. After all, if DS were a spirit (which he is not), he can only harm a person if they have the karma to be harmed. Therefore wouldn't the best way to protect themselves against harm be to engage in practices to purify their karma? So we go back to the argument that the best way to deal with this controversy is to focus on our practice.
It's true. If Trijang Rinpoche can pray to spirit, then other high lamas can pray to spirit too. Then why aren't other high lamas like Gangchen Rinpoche not allowed to practice Dorje Shugden? They are high lamas too.
Neither does he harm you if you break your commitments (your ripening karma does a fine job of ensuring you take responsibility for your own actions!)...if he were a spirit, wouldn't he take revenge if you stopped worshipping him? DS doesn't take revenge, just check out videos of him in trance. He always says to respect HHDL, despite the many negative things that HHDL has done against him.
And actually, that's not true, DS does not ban practitioners from receiving teachings from other lineages. If you check out the YouTube video at (/watch?v=WB00AFiSYZM), you'll see a thangka of him surrounded by Padmasambhava and Nyingma deities.
I can assure you Dorje Shugden is not a spirit... from my own experience. Nor does he prevent you from following other teachings. In fact I read many other books from other Lineages and I find them very inspiring.
Nor is what "I am doing" political, because I have no motives for personal power or gains through what I do. I only want the Tibetans suffering from the Dalai Lama's actions to be helped... mainly through educating people about what is going on. I also hope the Dalai Lama comes around.
Also do you see the woman at the beginning with the large telephoto lens? She is Chinese. She is taking photos which will be used for propaganda purposes in Chinese publications. And they say there's no connection? A child can see it.
The Dalai Lama has had many teachers. One of them was a D.S. practitioner. The Dalai Lama gave up Shugden in the seventies when Trijang Rinpoche was still alive. And Trijang Rinpoche respected his decision.
D.S. practitioners are Gelug sectarians. The D.L. is non-sectarian. He has profound gnowledge of all traditions.
So what's it going to be for everyone? Break your guru samaya and acquire heavy negative karma because you criticise enlightened beings like the 101st Gaden Tripa and Trijang Rinpoche for practising Dorje Shugden? Or lay down your pickets and stop criticising HHDL for the ban, because you don't know HHDL's real motivation? Either way, we lack attainments to judge any high lamas for what they do so perhaps we should stop, educate ourselves via sites like dorjeshugden{DOT}com and THINK.
NKT does not take into account the fact that the overwhelming majority of monks of Sera and Ganden voted AGAINST allowing the Shugden cult in their monasteries.
Most Gelugpa practice the old tradition of Gelug that is not "revised" by Pabongkha.
The Shugden monks were troublemakers. There are witnesses Abbots were even threatened. They were terrorizing other monks.
Because DS practice can shorten HHDL's life? This again doesn't make sense because the Dalai Lamas have control over their incarnations. Tibetans have such great faith in HHDL..and you'd think because they believe HHDL is a Buddha and they wish to attain similar state. How can a Buddha's life be affected by anything, anyone? Impossible.
It doesn't make sense that the Dalai Lama only persecutes DS practitioners but have not spoken critically on other practices. Any other believers can come to his teachings EXCEPT DS practitioners. hmm.... Why just target DS?!

They have their own monasteries in India. There is no general ban.
There is no violation of human rights. Amnesty International dismissed these claims 1998. Delhi High Court dismissed DS Devotees charges april 5, 2010.

What's up with the 'encouraged to participate in protest'. This is so counter productive to the real issues faced by millions of Tibetans.
The bottom line is that they are all being short sighted to the delicate Tibet situation, Dalai lama MUST promote a secular society for the 21st century and Dorjie Shugden by its very construct cannot accommodate this path. He has not called for its disbandment, but an exclusion from the umbrella of the exile government for the greater good. I concur.

The only reason they protest about this is because they themselves are tired of being outcasted. This isn't based on compassion, it's completely based on the desire to be accepted in the Buddhist community because they themselves do this practice. @wisdombeing good point! The central text of the gelugpa school, - LAMRIM CHENMO, authored by Tsongkhapa - drew from all existing schools of buddhism and even the Indian masters. So how can they be against other schools? That's like going against your own parents... it's not logical. Tsongkhapa and DS promote all the same qualities and teachings as other schools: the pure dharma that is traced back to Buddha Shakyamuni.

This deity, Dorje Shugden is the same nature as Je Tsongkhapa they are the same person performing different functions. Many Dorje Shugden sadhanas state that Dorje Shugden is the embodiment of the Guru, Yidam, and Protector, where Guru refers specifically to Lama Tsongkhapa.
Thus, many cannot accept what Dalai Lama is saying about Dorje Shugden when there are so many evidence pointing to Dorje Shugden's enlightened nature.

Even Dalai Lama himself recognised DS as an enlightened being in his earlier years. Can all these lamas be wrong? Their own enlightened & highly beneficial actions for others is already proof that their practice of DS was not a bad thing but brought a positive and very dharmic result.

Pabongkha gave the Gelug sectarians a Gelug protector last century. He claimed that DS was a Buddha and his students believed him. It´s NOT Tsongkhapa´s tradition. Shugden embodies the sectarian belief that other Tibetan lineages should be destroyed. NKT students don´t know this. But most Tibetans do.

The most outstanding Tibetan master of the 20th century was Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö. He had authority of ALL traditions and was a holder of all lineages. A non-sectarian.

@ugyenlhamo Dorje Shugden doesnt ban you from practising other branches of Buddhism. That is false.Dorje Shugden was practised by the Sakyas and recently HH Penor Rinpoche, the Nyingma Lama, allowed Dorje Shugden monks to come into his monastery for food and medical help because they were not allowed in TGIE refugee camps. If Shugden was sectarian, surely the Nyingma Lama would not allow them in.

I do not wish for the Dalai Lama to pass away. Everyday i pray for his long life. However, his death - like all of ours - is inevitable. Whether the ban goes because of the Dalai Lama's death or other reasons, the ban will be lifted - it has been predicted.

The Uk has already accepted China's sovereignty of Tibet. Slowly but surely, the rest of world will follow suit. There's little that can be done. Dorje Shugden will grow huge and bigger and in time even the ban will be forgotten especially after the passing of the Dalai Lama.

There is a danger you know, that you create the karma to abandon any practice you are given. why?
just think for a second, Dorje Shugden practice is a holy practice, think of all the actions done while under the impression your were right to ban and discard DS.
Won't a wrong view like this create the cause for you to not know the dharma in future ? no matter how holy a teacher is or how pure a lineage, your mind will be obscured by your past acitons.

Why do people get so worked up and angry at DS practitioners - if what they are saying is true that DS is a spirit, then let DS practitioners suffer their own karma for doing "wrong" practices. If DS is a buddha, then there is nothing to worry about because he won't harm you.
Everyone from murderers to saints have their own karma to contend with - so most important is for each of us individually to watch our own actions, which leads to our own karma.

I think it is possible for us to have mutual respect for both dorje shugden and dalai lama. That is entirely possible because both concern Dharma and practices/teachings. This applies to DL supporters and also to DS supporters.
As Dharma practitioners, shudn't we be even more kind to each other, especially to our enemies? we win people over, whatever cause we are fighting for, by our own practice & example, not by threatening pple, or smashing their houses just because they do a practice!

And it does still draw people's attention. They'll think, "What? That monk? The smiling one? He has banned something? But I thought he was a Buddhist!" It's still equally as effective but it doesn't antagonise his devotees. Isn't that a step in the right direction, to open dialogue? If the Dalai Lama doesn't want to talk to DS practitioners, maybe some more open-minded devotees will. Screaming at each other achieves nothing towards an understanding of each other's point-of-view.

It's not just HHDL who says that, but every teacher. And if a teacher tells you otherwise, then you should wonder about their motivations. If any teacher, or any deity, tells you to just follow blindly, then they may be doing it for their own gain. HHDL doesn't do this, and neither does DS who always tells people to respect HHDL despite the many negative things that have been said about him (DS).

But once you have chosen your Guru, then you should have faith in him. For example, I am not a student of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso but I found his books very logical and makes it easy for me to understand. So his book Heart Jewel that talks about the protector Shugden and promoting it, I totally agree and think it is trustworthy based on logic.

I don't think it's actually that difficult to respect all gurus, because all gurus promote the dharma and all dharma arose from one source, Buddha. If you truly understand the dharma, you'll see that the teachings from guru to guru don't differ at all. Therefore even if you have one guru (for example, GKG), you can still respect the teachings of another (for example, HHDL) because they are the same.

But you, lack of respect is what has led to the issues surrounding the ban. Lack of respect for people's personal choice of practice, lack of respect for people's accomplishments. Whether DS people like it or not, HHDL has connected hundreds of thousands of people to Buddhism and he deserves respect for that alone. Likewise whether anti-DS people like it or not, DS has helped countless beings to spread the dharma - just look at how successful lamas like GKG and Gangchen Rinpoche are.

Gangchen Rinpoche, for example, runs a healing centre in Kathmandu. How could you argue that is anything but beneficial or good? Gangchen Rinpoche heals people whose own governments should be taking care of them. If they want to believe that practising DS is detrimental and will lead a being to lower rebirths, then it's those practitioners' karma to bear (though I don't see how 'lower rebirths' is a valid point if lamas like Trijang and Zong Rinpoche's reincarnations have been found and recognised by HHDL).
If people want to keep DS, that's their choice and I hope they repay their gurus' kindnesses by doing their practice well to preserve the lineage.

The first line reads, "Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Invite them, teach them, slowly and give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the practice assuming it is wrong. Wouldnt that be a Buddhistic approach to all wrong-doers?"

Actually, it is not spirit worship because he is not a spirit. To say that it's spirit worship, is to say lamas like Trijang Rinpoche (HHDL'ss own guru) engaged in spirit worship. Even HHDL himself practised DS. As HYT masters, all these lamas control spirits, not worship them.
DS is not a spirit because you cannot bribe him to help you - just check out his sadhana on dorjeshugden{DOT}com and you'll see he does not insist that you pay homage to him before you gain the benefits of his practice.

Hehehe I think it is their own karma they should fear. After all, if DS were a spirit (which he is not), he can only harm a person if they have the karma to be harmed. Therefore wouldn't the best way to protect themselves against harm be to engage in practices to purify their karma? And actually, that's not true, DS does not ban practitioners from receiving teachings from other lineages. If you check out the YouTube video at (/watch?v=WB00AFiSYZM), you'll see a thangka of him surrounded by Padmasambhava and Nyingma deities.

I can assure you Dorje Shugden is not a spirit... from my own experience. Nor does he prevent you from following other teachings. In fact I read many other books from other Lineages and I find them very inspiring.
Nor is what "I am doing" political, because I have no motives for personal power or gains through what I do. I only want the Tibetans suffering from the Dalai Lama's actions to be helped... mainly through educating people about what is going on. I also hope the Dalai Lama comes around.

Also do you see the woman at the beginning with the large telephoto lens? She is Chinese. She is taking photos which will be used for propaganda purposes in Chinese publications. And they say there's no connection? A child can see it.

The Dalai Lama has had many teachers. One of them was a D.S. practitioner. The Dalai Lama gave up Shugden in the seventies when Trijang Rinpoche was still alive. And Trijang Rinpoche respected his decision.
D.S. practitioners are Gelug sectarians. The D.L. is non-sectarian. He has profound gnowledge of all traditions.

So what's it going to be for everyone? Break your guru samaya and acquire heavy negative karma because you criticise enlightened beings like the 101st Gaden Tripa and Trijang Rinpoche for practising Dorje Shugden? Or lay down your pickets and stop criticising HHDL for the ban, because you don't know HHDL's real motivation? Either way, we lack attainments to judge any high lamas for what they do so perhaps we should stop, educate ourselves via sites like dorjeshugden{DOT}com and THINK.

If China has been sending Shugden monks to India to split the exile community, as some claim - the "ban" was necessary.

NKT does not take into account the fact that the overwhelming majority of monks of Sera and Ganden voted AGAINST allowing the Shugden cult in their monasteries.
Most Gelugpa practice the old tradition of Gelug that is not "revised" by Pabongkha.
The Shugden monks were troublemakers. There are witnesses Abbots were even threatened. They were terrorizing other monks.

Because DS practice can shorten HHDL's life? This again doesn't make sense because the Dalai Lamas have control over their incarnations. Tibetans have such great faith in HHDL..and you'd think because they believe HHDL is a Buddha and they wish to attain similar state. How can a Buddha's life be affected by anything, anyone? Impossible.

It doesn't make sense that the Dalai Lama only persecutes DS practitioners but have not spoken critically on other practices. Any other believers can come to his teachings EXCEPT DS practitioners. hmm.... Why just target DS?!
