There is no mention of god in the oath or anywhere else in the Constitution because the Founders intended the United States to be a secular nation. In Article VI the Founders state that there shall be no religious test for office. By adding the words “so help me god” to the oath the new President is illegally amending the Constitution. He is taking the pledge and breaking it at the same time.

Whatever person, even the President, has the personal freedom to invoke God in his promise or oath or to leave God out of it. The Constitution requires no one to swear upon any God, but they can if they like to. Which is proper in a secular state that is neutral about religion.
@Popperite But the Chief Justice says that the President must repeat after him, and he adds the religious phrase at the end, and if the President refused to say it there would be a huge political backlash. This is unconstitutional and an insult to the idea of a secular state.

Remember that the President can choose any judge or Justice of the peace to administer the oath or affirmation too. The appearance of the Chief Justice is not required. @Popperite It just seems wrong to me. Europeans leaders don't keeping invoking religion all the time, Imams and Ayatollas do. The Founders did not mention the word god once in the entire Constitution. A bible is not required for the oath. There were some Presidents that didn't have the bible in their inauguration. The words "so help me God" is actually not required too. It was a tradition started by George Washington.

But if it ever got to Court there are precedents that would say this is a "technical defect" not one of substance in taking an oath, and that it is the intention to swear or affirm the oath that would actually matter. Courts generally don't entertain nonsense.

The courts would look to intention. Did he intend to take the oath? Then what he did was all that is necessary.

@calamagrostis88 You are only slightly wrong. Anyone taking an oath or an affirmation under the law is free to eitner swear an oath invoking the deity, or affirm and promise in a secular way. Whatever person, even the President, has the personal freedom to invoke God in his promise or oath or to leave God out of it. The Constitution requires no one to swear upon any God, but they can if they like to. Which is proper in a secular state that is neutral about religion.

Remember that the President can choose any judge or Justice of the peace to administer the oath or affirmation too. The appearance of the Chief Justice is not required. If he is there he is there on the invitation of the President elect. He can choose any other judge. None of them can aqyure of him to say swear or so help me God.

The Founders did not mention the word god once in the entire Constitution. If the President wants to talk about god in a speech that is one thing, but the Founders wrote down the requried oath, and I think it shows disrespect for them and for all the citizens who are non-believers to add "so help me god".

I don't think being a christian has anything to do with how the president performs. George Washington wasn't a hard core born again christian and he felt no need to talk about the bible yet he was the greatest. Also If anyone reads the bible without the presumption that it is or isn't true will come to believe that is make believe. 95% of Christians are taught to believe by there parents that the bible is true as children before they have even read the bible. The Bible is only a prop in the public ceremony, it confers no magical power on the oath, and isn't necessary in a private oath. The U.S. Constitution does NOT require a president to place his hand on a bible when giving the oath. That was added to the ceremony later by the nutballs. You can easily research this for yourselves. LBJ was sworn in on a book that was "handy" on air force one after he helpded kill JFK.

But if it ever got to Court there are precedents that would say this is a "technical defect" not one of substance in taking an oath, and that it is the intention to swear or affirm the oath that would actually matter. Courts generally don't entertain nonsense.

If the world is really lucky, Obama won't allow religion to influence his decisions and will bring the U.S. out of the 19th century, and into the 21st.

For your information President Franklin Pierce, declined to use a Bible when he took the oath of office and instead was sworn in a law book. Furthermore, he did not sware in. He instead stated that he affirmed the oath of office. So, I ask you what is your point that Obama didn't use a Bible? He's still the president.... get over it!

I am a recent atheist (just over two years now) and am certain there are no gods or devils so, while I detest council on Foreign Relations member Barack Hussein Obama, I would prefer to take an oath free of superstition, too.

Of course not, but you believe in these invisible supernatural beings you call gods and devils because your parents raised you to believe in such things. Air is tangible and I can see things blowing in the wind, so your analogy is flawed. I can feel the friction of the air by waving my hands through it, but I can't "touch" any of these supernatural beings you believe in because they do not exist.
It's tough -- very tough -- to break free of such superstitions as it took my about four agonizing months of searching for the pure truth and I went kicking and screaming the entire time.

No, that is not your point as air is tangible - you can touch air. We are touching air right now, but no one is touching these gods or demons because they do not exist. Gravity can be felt and even measured, but no one can measure the strength or detect these gods and demons of yours because they do not exist.

Of course you can touch air as you are touching air right now. If you weren't "touching air" you would be living in a hard vacuum and you would suffocate to death. You can see things in the air such as leaves when the wind blows, but I never said you can see gravity. What I did say was that gravity can be felt and measured, but your gods and demons cannot be measured because they do not exist.
Yes, people who see such things as "ghosts" or djinns (genies) are seeing things.

"Matthew 5:34-36 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black."
So, if you're an unbeliever it doesn't matter.
If you are a believer...he shouldn't anyway!

There is no constitutional requirement for a bible. Theodore Roosevelt didn't use a Bible when he first took the oath, John Quincy Adams swore on a book of law. John F. Kennedy had a bible beside him but did not place his hand on it. Lyndon B. Johnson swore the oath on a Roman Catholic missal.

There's nothing in the Constitution that says it has to be done with a Bible. Others have done it with other things, or without anything at all. The Bible is just tradition.
On another note, I like the idea of "a new era of transparency and openness."

This is only the most important oath taken in the whole world - and what do they do? Flub it, and then joke around about it. Nice to know our new leaders take such an important oath so "seriously"!
To make matters even worse - all we get of the 2nd oath taken is a still photo and audio with no actual video.
They're going to shit on the U.S. just like they shit on the most important oath anyone could ever take!

There is nothing in the Constitution that requires the oath to be taken with a bible. In fact, the word 'bible' is not in the Constitution at all.
