@R1NKE11 i think it's foreshadowing to the fact that tyler is a figment of the narrators imagination. we see him but only for a brief second, and then think, "wait, did i really see anything, or did I imagine it?" looking back on it at the end of the movie, he probably only occurs in flashes because he is not a full character in the narrator's life yet - he is only just being introduced into his mind.

If you watch the whole movie you get introduced to Tyler Durden, who is the guy who flashes on the screen in the early stages of the movie. Later you find out that Tyler and the narrator are the same person, the point of him flashing is to do with the narrator hallucinating and seeing Tyler, it is a transition of the narrator viewing Tyler in flashes at the start to viewing him as a real person later in the movie.
