Having watched to entirety nearly 500 different animes, I have to say that this is undoubtedly THE BEST anime opening sequence EVER. There is an art to portraying a series and its roots in the 1 minute and 30 second sequence prior to the first scene - in this opening you get all of the emotions of the series without ever being cheated by the melody. Evangelion is certainly not the best anime ever, but its opening sequence is inarguably the most perfectly portrayed.

I have the impression the prevalent opinion is that Evangelion is a very good series but nothing more than that. @TheUniquePizza35 I understand what you're saying, but there are a plethora of other series which rim on perfection. For starters, some of the elements in Shinji's psychological battle with the Evas are disputably cliche, which is particularly true for the many of my friends who label him a wimp and write him off 3 or 4 episodes into the series. If the main protagonist cannot relate to an average, teenage male's psyche, it can't be a perfect series at all.

just because you don't like this doesn't mean this is a poor anime. people understand this anime as a great anime because this anime make you think and look at things differently, but that could also bring some people to great disturbance. which is the purpose of this piece of art.
You guys should check out Bokurano - similar to Evangelion in the sense of children piloting big robots, but more realistic, universal and depressing (The robot s are 500m tall and they run on life energy.)
The sound and audio is perfect, but I noticed that the audio delayed a bit, because the opening follows the rhythm of the song, so that the audio delay messed the rhythm up. But don't be sad, it's a constructive comment, I'm not here do let you down, OK?

Evangelion is not a mecha anime. You simply didn't watch it or you didn't get into de story. Evangelion involves thinking from the spectator, which is kind a rare thing nowadays. In both anime and spectators.
@9OmniSlash6 yes, it is a mecha anime, the gigantig robots who are being pilots are mechas, therefore it is a mecha anime (and it has many more themes, but that's beside the point)

You obviously didn't see it as well. Eva's are not mechas nor humanoids, but somekind of aliens. Well, Eva Unit 00, 02, 03, 04... come from Adam (the first Angel) and Unit 01 comes from Lilith (the 2nd Angel). The mankind is the 18th Angel (Lilim) seen in EoE which destroyed the own mankind itself. Angels are forms of which the mankind could have been and has been created. Adam created all the Angels and Lilith the humans. The story is somehow a bit too complex i agree.

And f you want specifics that put me off in evangelion there was a few things ( without these things it would be one of the best I saw) The naked scenes with the girls. Main kid being pervert about it. That one scene with vainy breasts. This show was filled with male sexual tension. TURN OFF. IM FEMALE. Not to mention both female characters were freaks that I could never relate to. The male was normal.BUT IM NOT MALE.

I remember when this first came out. While I was a junior in highschool. My friend used to order imported VHS tapes straight from japan. It was cool as hell because we got to see the off the wall japanese commercials in between the segments. This anime got really deep into religion and had some controversial scenes that Gainax almost got their plug pulled because of those scenes. Nonetheless, an instant classic. I feel old as hell just thinking about this.

I never noticed that Kaworu appears in the op, he's like an easter egg here. You can see him after the AT_Field Frame in a red colored frame, before rei (+/- at 1:10). He appears for 0.1 sec so its hard to see.
Aside from the superb animation in this show; I also like this song. For its time the quality of the animation was awesome and it set the bar. This song is also a good example what good J-pop is. However, everything else in Evangelion, particularly the symbolism, philosophy, character development , and plot line SUCKED ASS!

I suggest you buy or download it, whatever gets you off, and take about 3 days off. Watch it several times. The series falls under the catagories; Mecha, Sci Fi, Violence, Military, Post-apocalyptic, *Psychological* and *Mindfuck*. The last two usually mean they go very deep and most won't get what the hell they're about. Still, if you like the first few catagories you can still greatly enjoy this anime.
@ilyxb00 Ignore the 3 thumbs down dude, s silly. Anyways, Evengelion is can be interpreted in many different ways. It's main concept is questioning reality, who am i, what is the self ect. But it in turn it comments on the fact that reality is your own. It is very philosophical and therefor can be interpreted subjectively. :-) It has been debated to death over the years, and if you want to find some perspective you should check out some the ideas and debates that are floating around.
I disagree. As Psychological as the anime may be, the theme kinda fits. If it were something more like the Lucky Star OP, then I would agree with you.
Because a live action version would be shit. Look at any cartoon to live action movie, and they're always shit. Sorry for my bad language, but have you seen the Death Note movies? Just no.
The big problem is they change to much of the story, If they left it as is it would make a really good action packed blood filled movie that the fans would love.
Case in point is the new blood the last vampire live action film that came out not long ago. If they'de kept to the original anime film (which is one of my favourites) it would have been just brilliant.
You know what, I never finished this anime. I kinda just stopped after episode 14 I think. And then I just started seeing the same one or two episodes over and over. . . then I saw the last 15 minutes of the first movie. Damn, was that a bad idea. But I just don't know if I should try to finish it.
Here is a little experiment to find out how many people actually care out there. If you think I should finish watching it, thumb me up. If i get up to 10 thumbs up then I'll finish watching it.
@Zathren If I were you I would have watched: Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, FMA, Afro Samurai, and Cowboy Bebop. These are much better animes than Evangelion. The best part is the main male characters don't whiny like little bitches.

QUESTION: Can I watch End Of Evangelion before finishing the anime/manga??? Please tell me because I would love to watch the anime, and I've heard that it is very amazing and symbolic, but the movie also looks totally kick-ass and I want to know if it will make sense to the plot or not. I'll watch the anime either way, just want to know if I can watch the movie. I've watched the anime up to about episode 10-15 I believe...

I never noticed that Kaworu appears in the op, he's like an easter egg here. You can see him after the AT_Field Frame in a red colored frame, before rei (+/- at 1:10). He appears for 0.1 sec so its hard to see.

Aside from the superb animation in this show; I also like this song. For its time the quality of the animation was awesome and it set the bar. This song is also a good example what good J-pop is. However, everything else in Evangelion, particularly the symbolism, philosophy, character development , and plot line SUCKED ASS!

I suggest you buy or download it, whatever gets you off, and take about 3 days off. Watch it several times. The series falls under the catagories; Mecha, Sci Fi, Violence, Military, Post-apocalyptic, *Psychological* and *Mindfuck*. The last two usually mean they go very deep and most won't get what the hell they're about. Still, if you like the first few catagories you can still greatly enjoy this anime.

@ilyxb00 Ignore the 3 thumbs down dude, s silly. Anyways, Evengelion is can be interpreted in many different ways. It's main concept is questioning reality, who am i, what is the self ect. But it in turn it comments on the fact that reality is your own. It is very philosophical and therefor can be interpreted subjectively. :-) It has been debated to death over the years, and if you want to find some perspective you should check out some the ideas and debates that are floating around.

It really unnerves you somehow.

I disagree. As Psychological as the anime may be, the theme kinda fits. If it were something more like the Lucky Star OP, then I would agree with you.

Because a live action version would be shit. Look at any cartoon to live action movie, and they're always shit. Sorry for my bad language, but have you seen the Death Note movies? Just no.

The big problem is they change to much of the story, If they left it as is it would make a really good action packed blood filled movie that the fans would love.
Case in point is the new blood the last vampire live action film that came out not long ago. If they'de kept to the original anime film (which is one of my favourites) it would have been just brilliant.

I'd just hope it looks something like the series 'cause I know it's not gonna be as good.
In the end that's 'bout all you can expect from cartoon/game/Anime films.

You know what, I never finished this anime. I kinda just stopped after episode 14 I think. And then I just started seeing the same one or two episodes over and over. . . then I saw the last 15 minutes of the first movie. Damn, was that a bad idea. But I just don't know if I should try to finish it.
Here is a little experiment to find out how many people actually care out there. If you think I should finish watching it, thumb me up. If i get up to 10 thumbs up then I'll finish watching it.

@Zathren If I were you I would have watched: Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, FMA, Afro Samurai, and Cowboy Bebop. These are much better animes than Evangelion. The best part is the main male characters don't whiny like little bitches.
