How was this done? It looks like they're purely chiming from the tail end so obviously the bells are down. They bells would have to be swung to get them chiming though so that can't be the method. I'm unaware of clock hammers being attached to Liverpool's cathedral bells. Were the clappers tied or something?
You tie the rope to the clapper using string or something similar and then effectively putt the clapper onto the side of the bell. That is why the ropes are so high up, and also why the light treble clappers can be pulled using a finger, whereas the tenor needs a lot of strength. Hope that helps.
