@weightfeather1 But "Maude" (Bea Arthur) eventually hired the British candidate for the job, the lusty lush "Mrs. (Nelle) Naugatuck," as played by the late, great Hermione Baddeley.
Ferrell finally got a to play a sitcom housekeeper, though, as the scene-stealing "Berta" on CBS-TV's "Two & A Half Men."
In fact, Ferrell's "Berta" is the first non-starring sitcom role I've seen in years who almost warrants a spin-off series of her own.
@weightfeather1 Conchata Ferrell was also one of the characters interviewed to replace "Florida Evans" (Esther Rolle) as the housekeeper on "Maude."
Ferrell's housekeeper interviewee was a sarcastic Hispanic woman, a type later developed for the character of "Teresa Betancourt" (Liz Torres), when "Mike 'Meathead' Stivic" and "Gloria Bunker Stivic" (Rob Reiner & Sally Struthers) moved out of the "Bunker" home and next door, "Teresa" becoming a tenant on "All In The Family."
I loved this show when it was on. It was the first time I saw Conchata Ferrel and I just loved her as "April Green". She had such a wonderful laugh. I think she even made the cover of TV Guide. Also, I think this was the first sitcom ever to feature gay people - an "older" gay couple, I think.
I remember when this show premiered. It was heavily promoted by ABC. I watched a few episodes, and was very bored. I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't very funny. Apparently, most of the viewing public felt the same way, because it bombed.
I thought it was good, and would love to see the series again
