  • Great stuff..

  • I was actually at this show at the front right side of the stage! (If the video was better I could probably see myself). Still one of the top 10 concerts I've been to in my life. Miss ya Kevin.

  • Fabulous album ... a true gem of music.

  • I have to wonder -- what the hell is there to dislike? Great tune, great band, great band personality and performance... Are the dislikes just because the video is dark?

  • what a song and band... thanks for posting

  • Amazing :)

  • Thank you for posting this, it made my day.

  • LMAO, I feel your pain and frustration but have you seen the toy matinee -Queen of Misery-Live-Cactus-Roxy video? Oh happy day : )

  • This song is so beautiful, haven´t heard it in years Thanks a lot!!!

  • WOW

  • This is from "The Roxy" on Sunset, Aug 1992 I believe. I have the audio mixed from the board with the whole set. Fantastic performance. Tim Pierce sits in on one tune later in the set.

  • I have NO idea how they did it, but the sound when I saw TM play live on a BAR DANCE FLOOR was the most sonically accurate I've ever been privy to. It's reflected in this clearly dated and technologically challenged video tape. Can't believe this is a live camcorder.

How did you get this and POST MOAR!!!11!!1

  • VERY nice!!! Thanx for sharing this vid.

  • I would have loved to see Toy Matinee the actual band live. There's only one guy here from the Album, Kevin Gilbert. Guy Pratt, Patrick Leonard, Brian MacLeod, and Tim Pierce are absent from this concert.

  • Brian MacLeod??? Why is his name familiar to me?

  • He played the drums for Sheryl Crow. Also, Madonna. There were some others. He's not hugely unique, but he reminds me in some ways of Porcaro, stable as hell, but often choked to death by producers' noise gates, compression, etc (David Foster, I'm looking at you).

  • But, keep in mind that KG always had an outstanding band with him, whenever he played live. It really doesn't matter if the other guys were playing with him or not...

  • Sheryl Crow (the ultimate bitch) on keyboards, and ultimate shredder Marc Bonilla (the left-handed guitarist at the left of the screen - do a Keith Emerson Band search for some more Marc video) on guitar. Kevin was amazing, Patrick leonard does some great keys on the Julian Lennon CDs.

  • That sounds great for live.

  • He never got the credit due him. He had ears, chops, and studio focus like Steely Dan, but better writing skills. Some of the best bands in history never get heard, and this is one of them. Ballad of Jenny Ledge and this are 2 of my all time favorites. So much better than everything else out there.

  • I am dragging a bound priest across the floor in his honor...Damn those bastards..and they are doing congressional hearings on Baseball Players? Kevin was way ahead of his time. We should all take what he said into account.

  • I'm as big a Kevin Gilbert fan as anyone but to say he had better writing skills than Becker and Fagen is a bit much. This is no disrespect to Gilbert at all.

  • We the people were screwed ! Only one masterpiece from Kevin's Toy......I so hope your at piece kev....we miss you : (

  • This band has such wild time signatures and tunings and everything - bet every member of this band had to be awesome as well, just to be able to even keep up with Kevin Gilbert.

  • Actually, I believe the only time signature other than 4/4 (or 2/2, or any 2 or 4 based time) on the album is "Remember My Name" which is in 6/8.

  • This sounds like a take-off on some older Procol Harum stuff!

  • too bad most people dont know how bad cheryl crow screwed him over , rest in peace kevin

  • "Third Matinee" is a band that spun off of "Toy Matinee" with some of the same members. It has a similar sound if you like this. Tragically, only one album from that team-up as well.

  • WOW!

  • he was a genius. fuck sheryl crow

  • "Ising4u" you are totally correct on the Sherly Crow deal! I was a good friend of kevin's from both SF and LA, we played with Giraffe at the Stone in SJ, CA. I used to record at Kevin's "Lawnmower Shop" studio out in Passadena in 1992. Towards the end with Kevin he was behaving in such a bizarre way...I miss him very much, he was a sincere person who cared deeply about the integrity of his music.

  • Man what a great song...i recently discovered this toy matinee album that my dad has had for years...the album's got so much depth...it's incredible!

  • Icarus was the guy who flew to close to the sun and had his wings melt and the little red Hen thought the sky was falling. I think the reference is that Icarus tries to quell the little read hens doomday fears but is doomed any way. Just my guess.

  • There is tons of good and interesting Gilbert video out there. But SOMEONE keeps removing any of it thats posted here. Gilbert was a little-known genius, and a tragic loss.

  • Yep, just got a (used) copy of this album on Amazon and it's well worth it! Things She Said is especially good. By the way, anyone know what he's referencing in the line "I like the part where Icarus hijaks the little red hen?"

  • Kevin Gilbert in all honour - let's not forget the co-writer and producer behind the ebony and ivory. Anyone has any more of Patrick Leonard? And yes: the album from which this is taken is availabe on both CD and DVD-A formats - great album.

  • I was quite taken by this song years ago and am grateful to be reunited with it--many thanks! I'm just sad to hear what has happened to the musicians in the meanwhile.

  • I used to love this CD, but I lost it years ago. Anyone know if it's still available anywhere?

  • Yes. I saw it on Amazon.

  • I heard he was to be given the gig with genesis the day he died...probably a fib.

  • kenrayboy, not a fib, he was going to be given an audition to become their lead vocalist (not the job, although I bet he would have gotten it). Given what a huge influence Genesis was on Kevin, this is beyond tragic.

  • I hear the late Kevin Gilbert was on the short list to sing for Genesis, but unfortunately he died. RIP Kevin

  • What a talent Kevin Gilbert was, and what a loss. Thud has been one of my favorite albums for years, but thanks for giving me my first listen to Toy Matinee!

  • RIP, Kevin. Thanks for the video, daan551963. I'd love to see more KG or Toy Matinee videos, as well, if anyone else has them. I've seen the Jenny Ledge and Last Plane out on AOL Video already.

  • Whoa - is he playing an electric bouzouki? Great talent - damn shame.

  • For those not in the know: on keyboards is Kevin's then-girlfriend, Sheryl Crow. Don't get me started....two Toy Matinee videos on AOL video.

  • Yep you're right! :) I worked with Kevin a lot back when he was with a band called Giraffe in the San Jose Ca area in the studio. Kevin was an absolute muiscal genius and not many people know HE was the reason Sheryl made it!!

  • anybody have more of kevin gilbert?

  • Hey buckyyio...Thanks for the footage. What a great band they were. I still costantly listen to their music. I would have loved to see them live. I was LA at the time, they were a big influence on me and what was going on at the time...thanks again
