This track is awesome. and R.L, was Hip-hop long before Hip-hop was born and was influenced by it later in his career.. Listen to his work in the early 90's.. He played things like a DJ was mixing records. Trust me. R.L Burnside is all about this track.
Was introduced to to R.L.'s music through his modern stuff. I listen to all his music now and have a lot of respect for him as an artist. Stretching out and trying new things is characteristic of an artist. It also means that artist is interacting with and enjoying the creativity of other artists. I enjoy listening to his music through every influence. It makes me feel part of his life. I wish I could have hung around with him and his family on the farm when they ate bbq and played music.
RL was involved in these remixes and like clanmacleod said he was very flexible with his style of music. A lot of his remixes were made after he met Jon Spencer (and the Blues Explosion). Listen to some of his songs off of the album "Ass Pocket Full of Whiskey" and you will definitely hear the influence of Jon Spencer. As a matter of fact I believe Spencer played on several of the songs recorded by RL later in his career.
I think that if you check it out.....he was involved in these remixes....it's off his own album. I get the impression that he was a very flexible artist who enjoyed all sorts of interpretations of his music.
Actually having talked to R.L. about those remix albums myself in 1999 he said to me ... and I quote "That shit ain't the blues!" He knew it meant possibly some money, but he didn't dig how they sounded.
And perhaps he needed the money...I imagine we've all been there. Nevertheless....it works for me! It certainly isn't "true blues"...but it's funky and it appeals to a certain circle of people.
@DevinMiller72 I'm no purist ... I love collaboration and remixes, though not a big fan of the ones they did for R.L. on Fat Possum. I wish they were harder edged, like his music.
he was involved in the remixes. i think him and the producer of beck's mellow gold album collaborated for one album with RL's grandson on drums. it was a good album.
to each his own though, i for one love this stuff!
On an album called First Recordings by Burnside, there is a version of "Goin' Down South" that you might enjoy. It is my favorite version. It represents the heart of Delta Blues.
I can't believe these two got together that is so fucking cool. Thank you for posting this. I love them both. R.L. burnside is one sexy old man. They are both the shit.
yeah!

I'm having a hard time with these modern remixes of Burnside's work. I'm Pretty SURE he wasn't to CRAZY about them his self!
I think it's in bad taste to try and do so!

Thank you so much for putting this up.. R.L. is truly a pioneer in blues, too bad he didn't ever get the recognition he deserved.
