Some people hate Palhares because they feel he continues to hold onto a joint lock even if his opponent taps. Once you catch someone in a submission, you release the hold when the referee tells you to stop. Not when your opponent taps. I know it sounds cruel, but only the referee can declare that the fight is over. A fighter cannot declare a victory. Rules are rules.

If you look at the great Royce Gracie, he did the same thing. If you don't hold it longer, it happens what happened with GSP and Hardy. GSP is a black-belt in BJJ and he couldn't submit Hardy after a Kimura and a Armbar.

@chocolate6123 Well, he didn't have money to afford a house. We used to cut sugarcane at the fields, it has really bad job conditions and usually they dont make even 5(setting this high) dollars a day. They are usually called "boia-fria" I don't know if theres any literature about them in English, but see the images and make your own conclusions about it.
@chocolate6123 Humm... maybe it's kind of hard for you to understand but those field works are usually really close to slavery payment/rights. you literally get paid a couple of cents after spending all day under the burning sun, risking to chop any of your body parts off with a huge rusty machate, he probably got a ride for free or hitchhiked, and there are a lot of jiu jitsu academys in the poor community where classes are free.

@KSchwarz jiujitsu should teach you to be selfless, I have no idea how somebody could be so advanced in it and is completely unable to tell when he has held onto a kneebar too long, whether he has won the fight, or whether he's allowed to stop completely and look at the ref. These are things you should probably have down by the time you get to UFC. It's hard to teach manners, and I don't think he'll ever show respect to his opponents in the cage. Palhares is a great guy im a fan and everything ... but the only thing that seemed to bother me the most is when he says he doesnt have enough money for a roof .. a ROOF .. but he could afford to travel and pay him jiu jitsu lessons ... it bugs me alot someone explain?

@chocolate6123 Palhares always trained for free with Murilo Bustamante and Bebeo Duarte. His physical strength shaped in the sugar cane fields gave him a opportunity to start in jiu-jitsu at age 15

@chocolate6123 Well, he didn't have money to afford a house. We used to cut sugarcane at the fields, it has really bad job conditions and usually they dont make even 5(setting this high) dollars a day. They are usually called "boia-fria" I don't know if theres any literature about them in English, but see the images and make your own conclusions about it.

@chocolate6123 Humm... maybe it's kind of hard for you to understand but those field works are usually really close to slavery payment/rights. you literally get paid a couple of cents after spending all day under the burning sun, risking to chop any of your body parts off with a huge rusty machate, he probably got a ride for free or hitchhiked, and there are a lot of jiu jitsu academys in the poor community where classes are free.

Toquihno is completely insane and will probably kill somebody in the cage. He constantly cheats, throws punches after the bell, holds the fence, thinks he's won when he hasnt and tries to be a reff and stop fights.
Great talent, very small brain or is just unable to empathise with other humans. holding onto heelhooks is not ok, i doubt he'll be in the ufc long if he acts the same as the last fight

@KSchwarz jiujitsu should teach you to be selfless, I have no idea how somebody could be so advanced in it and is completely unable to tell when he has held onto a kneebar too long, whether he has won the fight, or whether he's allowed to stop completely and look at the ref. These are things you should probably have down by the time you get to UFC. It's hard to teach manners, and I don't think he'll ever show respect to his opponents in the cage. He is a gigantic child but so skilled
