  • Opossums are scary!

We opened the back door of my parents' old place and there was one of those little dudes sitting on the step eating something and it scared the crap outta me, teeth out and everything. They're cute but mean. :(

  • @ViciousHumanoid - They definitely look menacing with all of their teeth! If they're holed into a corner, they'll definitely try to fight back, but they (shouldn't) just attack without a reason.

  • Unfortunately, the only opossum I've seen was in my room while I happened to be .Not expecting it

    .Really chilled out

    .At ground level

  • @pogogo51 - HA! That's not good - :)

  • Cute!! We have one in our backyard too, along with some feral cats. They stay out of each other's way.

  • @kschlem - Thanks! They usually do, unless one or the other starts to get aggressive or defends the food as it's own... I've seen raccoons and cats eat together at the same time too - as long as they keep their distance, everything's cool...

  • About of my PETS, TWO DOGS,3 CATS AND ONE OPOSSUM, You can visit me in : CAPISTRANTOMAS in you tube...[;>)

  • @CAPISTRANTOMAS - Very cool, thanks for the link!

  • I LOVE POSSUMS! This is great footage. Where was this filmed?

  • @JagdTiger88 - Thanks! I'm glad you like it -- this was shot in PA.

  • This opossum may llok cute, but if yoou corner them they become extremely fierce and will bite, hiss, growl and spit. They animals are also serious predators

  • @mariojragucci2 - THAT's why you don't corner them - :) Hehe... I don't know about the spitting, I've always heard they "play possum" first, which means they try to appear more or less dead so their immediate threat backs off from them, but I can see if they're absolutely cornered that they'd act like that. I'm not sure about the "serious predator" though - I think that's more or less a thing of opportunity (they're scavengers, if they can't find food, THEN they act as predators)

  • @taburineagle For example, if opossum runs into a chicken coop thats not protected, the opposum will kill and eat a chicken. These are opportunistic scavangers and opportunistic predators, yes. Would also munch on a snake, I believe

  • @mariojragucci2 - Oh yeah, definitely! In that way, they would definitely be serious predators - but I doubt they predate on a normal basis if there is other food around. Foxes and raccoons are the same way, they'll eat whichever meal is easiest for them to catch at the time (which gets them in to trouble quite often...)

  • @mariojragucci2 ...You are very wrong. They are Marsupials, the only ONE in AMERICA,, his CORRECT name is OPOSSUM, they are very tender, never bite to nobody or the domestic PETS. I got a Opossum, now is the size of my cats and He coexist with my 3 cats and two little dogs. The Ignorant people believe is a big rat for his aspect. and HURT, KILL THEM.

They, the Opossum clean the yard of snakes, rets, etc but never they are DREDATORS.

  • @mariojragucci2 thats like saying you'd be aggressive and dangerous if I had you on the ground kicking and punching you.

    doesn't make them some menace

  • Great footage! I love Opossums! haven't seen any lately though.

  • @Ginnymo62 - I saw one a few days back at my raccoon site, but I never see them (or really anything else) at my house... :(

  • Opossums are so amazing....so very beautiful!!

  • @NuclearNympho - Thanks! I think so too, that's not usually the comment I get - :(

  • I love them. They look like they have been around a million years. I read this year that they eat a lot of carrion, which I did not know, so they do us some favors. I have one come visit sometimes--I leave hazelnuts on my doorstep for the possums and raccoons (mom and two babies). we have surprised each other before on the front steps too, lol.

  • Ha! That's cool - :) I've never known that they eat carrion either, but it wouldn't surprise me. They're opportunists, like a lot of mammals their size (skunks, coons, foxes, etc.) are - so, if something's plentiful, food-wise, then they'll probably try to use it... :)

  • FUCKIN' RIVER-RAT!!!

  • Yeah, no... fuck that - :P

  • She looks healthy! Great footage Zach!!

On returning from the store the other day, at about 2 in the afternoon.... I approached the steps and a possum happened to be just sitting there?. He let me by, with only a hiss...

    What in the world Zach?

  • Possum's are really great critters. I raised one last year.

  • That's cool, they're very interesting!

  • years ago a bunch of us guys at the plant where we worked caught a big possum and put it in the supervisors office. A true blood Italian. He came to work and went in his office..."momma-mea, the biggest rat I havea ever seema" That's a true story....funny as heck!!!!!

  • Hehehe.. :)

  • Awesome! - I cant help but wonder, if you jumped out and scared him, would he instantly play dead, or run away? - that's mean, I know, but I'm very curious about that.

I saw one playing dead once. It was amazing.

    Great video.

  • Thank you! That's a good question, I'm not sure on that one! I did freak an opossum out once though, it was feeding and I opened the door (I was away on vacation, they had an opossum in the yard and I wanted to get a better look at it), the possum ran off towards the woods!

  • Cute! It's funny watching her nose around and find her little things to eat. :)

  • WildFlowerz: That is exactly what we call an animal when they cannot be released. And we really do use them in fairs, seminars and for teaching classes as an "educational" resource animal. Clackers is the cutest name and that is a sound they make by knocking their tongue on the roof of their mouth. They also make a purring sort of noise when they are happy and during mating. I miss mine so much and can't wait for Spring for some more!

  • They are! Kind of weird looking in some cases, but it just adds to their mystique!

  • Weird looking, Nah.....They are just ugly....And stupid......But, Rather nice ....Make good outdoor pets...Good with cats....

  • I'm sure they look ugly to some people, but stupid... nah... I'm not sure about the good with cats part - ;)

  • I am a Wildlife Rehabber and opposums are my favorite! They are suprizingly clean animals and dont carry rabies. I have two that are still hanging around each night waiting for their feedings!

  • That's cool that you work with animals like that - I've always appreciated the work that rehabbers do, especially with animals that most people wouldn't even consider giving a second chance. It's sad to see the public at large's opinion on quite a few animals, especially raccoons! Opossums are very interesting animals, I've known other people that rehabilitate them, they seem a little more demanding than some other animals.

  • Dang they wont stop eating! :D

Cool animal, this one looks clean and taken care of :)

  • Hehe... yep, this one's HUNGRY! :) Thanks!

  • wow he is huge, I seem them once in awhile in my backyard, they are so timid. nice video!

  • Thanks! I've seen various sizes, they usually *always* look fat to me - :)

  • Good footage. Glad you found it.

People don't realize it, but they can

run fast. I know after I tried to run after one to film.

  • Thank you! They do! I actually had a really cool thing happen with a raccoon and an opossum! Very long back-story short, I was visiting a relative with woods in his yard, so I made every attempt to watch any wildlife that would come up, and a raccoon and possum were taking turns to see if that stranger at the door (me) was safe. The possum came up, ran back to the coon, "talked" to him, then the coon came up, ran back to the possum (who was waiting) and they both ran off together!

  • Adorable. Bring us more.

  • Yes! Will do - I have a few things planned, an amazing raccoon video and a few squirrel videos planned for release soon, just haven't had the time lately to work on it! I also have a video of an active Dove's nest (or it was at the time) I need to work on - hopefully something soon!

  • Oh he looks so cute when he tries to chew the food at 1:50! 5/5!

  • He does! Thanks for the comment, and the rating. Sorry I didn't get back to this before, been ridiculously busy the last few months!

  • Looks like a tasmanian devil. Nice dude, nasty tail.

  • Opossums do look a little gnarly - they're cool animals though!

  • lol looks like a giant rat

  • Kind of!

  • Hey, great video. There is a opossum at our local nature center named Ginny that I love! This is really cute, what state was it filmed?

  • Oh yeah? Very cool! Sorry for the late response, I've been out for a while - :) This video was shot in Pennsylvania.

  • yup and twice as many teeth as humans, i have an opossum, her name is zohey!

  • Oh yeah? Very cool! I didn't know about the teeth, but it makes sense - I've seen one or two open their jaws all the way before, biiiiig mouth! :)

  • Oh they're adorable!!!!!

  • Thanks! They have a kind of prehistoric look to them - very interesting animal!

  • That guy at the end wanted whatever it was he was eating in his mouth aaaalll at once! Om nom nom!

  • "It's mine! MINE!" :) I believe there were peanuts down there, but I'm not sure.

  • opossums have 13 nipples - little known fact!

  • Really? Wow! I didn't know that!

  • Great video

  • Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.

  • Great video! What a cute face. I heard they can be quite vicious though. A couple of months ago, my dog ferreted a possum mother out of our ferns, and I thought he killed her. She ended up coming to and running off with all but two pups. :( I took them to the local animal rescue. They were so cute, about six weeks old, and I was told they would survive well.

  • Hopefully they did! That's sad, but things like that happen sometimes. I'm sure they *can* be vicious too, but animals aren't usually vicious unless they need to be (like if they're cornered and have nowhere to go) - of course, *anything* can bite... :)

  • wild!lol

  • Hehe... they are! Thanks!

  • Thanx Tab, it reminds me of KMRagan's Opie the Opossum video. Cool little critter with black alien eyes ;) I hope you're doing ok in these tough times :/

  • Eh... I'm getting by - nothing major, but getting by. I remember that one! It looked like it's eyes were crossed - they're definitely interesting animals!

  • Another great video! Wonderful chewing closeups, but also terrific around the 20 second mark when he walks in slowly in profile and you can see the way they move, and the way their tail balances behind them - very cool!

  • Thank you! They're definitely different creatures - very interesting, especially their gait Their tails are prehensile to one degree or another too - I'm glad you liked it!

  • Hey Zach, now that's an AWSUM 'POSSUM! Or as we say here in mexico, BIG TLACUACHE! Glad you only shoot these critters with a videocam!=)*****

  • Thanks! I'm glad you like it! Hehe... and that makes 2 of us!

  • Thanks Zach!!!

    Tyler

  • Sure, you're welcome!
