Its even better in rerun, haha. Thats the first time i have seen Zanzibar, Outback, Backstop, Fastdraw, Raptor, Spearhead, Hit n Run and other 1987-88 characters in cartoon form.
These are great, i never got to see these as a kid, cause i live in the UK. Great combo of Marvel comic stories and Sunbow voices. Excellent stuff, thanks for uploading.
The reason the animation was better in these commercials was because of their short length. Sunbow had so many shows going at once, they had to farm out the animation for the shows to various asian studios. Some were "A" team studios, some were considered the "B" team. It takes months to do just one thirty minute episode, and when you consider the vast number of shows Sunbow was producing, you can see how the animation would suffer at times, especially with the "B" studios in Korea.
It's so badass listening to them sing all the plot points, awkwardly inserting character names and new developments into the existing theme... "How am I supposed to make 'fighting Cobra and Destro' sound natural?" "I don't know...just do it, or we'll find someone else!"
Fun fact: Hasbro bosses was originally against making Cobra action figures because market research at the time showed villain toys were poor sellers. The people who developed the ARAH line and Marvel had to fight to get Cobra Commander, the Cobra Trooper, and Cobra Officer made. Hasbro must have changed their minds fast because most of these commercials focus on Cobra. Heck the Cobra character even got theme songs.
Hasbro knew what they were doing in the 80s. I think these commericals were a great idea to get kids to read comics it really got them to read great stories.
The issue with cobra stealing the defense plan is pretty decieving as IIRC Sgt. Slaughter didnt appear in that issue, and i dont recall the warthog in that issue either.
Scary part is, I had most of those comics, right up to the point that Cobra Commander was ready to walk away and was gunned down from behind. Fred VII if I remember correctly put on the Silver Suit, and assumed the identity and went to make Serpentor's life misrable.
Best issue, was the battle for Cobra Island, right after it was formed....man I was ticked when they got diplomatic immunity.
In my opinion Larry Hama kept the storyline quality pretty high for the entire comic run but the art took a turn for the worse near the end. Seems like the artists got influenced by Rob Liefield's art of the early '90s.
The later Cobra Civil War arc and it's aftermath has to be my favorite part of the comics.
I remember when I was a kid, I thought this was a commercial for the toys. I forgot it was for the comic books.
Turns out the FCC had a regulation limiting the amount of animation in a commercial for toys to 10 seconds. Hasbro got around this by making these ads for the books, which were really editorially spotlighting the toys as they were introduced.
wow!!!!! i actually have TOONS of gi joe comics...starting with #1 that book was like a fkn poster ...too big. Im glad Im not the only one that remembers these days..haha ..Zartan!!! Tomax and Xamot!! holy crap.
Brilliant cross-promotion. The commercials promote the comics, which promote the toys, which further promote the comics and back again. Of course, the commercials also simultaneously promote the toys w/out even showing the actual products. Ingenius.
Thank you for uploading this! You surely forgot some, though, because I was looking for the first one I remember - Storm Shadow's rescue of Cobra Commander.
Hi, at the time of making the compilation I did not have that one. I missed that one too!
Don't worry thought because I later found that one (issue #24) and issue #28. I posted them separately so please just check out my other videos and you will see them. Enjoy!
Thanks for the great finds! These commercials bring back memories. I finally caved in and bought #49 after seeing an ad. Then my bro and I scrambled to collect back issues. Been a Joe fan since the beginning. Now I've given my old toys to my 7-yr-old and am getting hooked all over again!
maybe kids would still read comics if they ran commercials like this every month. I remember seeing these then going to pick up the latest issue at the mall. my stupid mom wouldn't let me subscribe.
Actually, if it were not for the commercials, I would never even thought of reading a comic. After picking them up I couldn't ever put them down! Yes, I agree with you 100%. Try convincing the miser executives at Marvel and elsewhere. I think Disney actually owns Marvel now.
@CaptainBuckRogers Marvel doesn't own the rights to the Hasbro properties they produced (comics and the tv series). Hasbro owns 100% of the comic rights and re-releases them from time to time under who ever is publishing GI JOE comics at the moment. If they released a DVD and played these commercials as a bonus features with the "Marvel" ending, it might confuse new customers.
@IHS7 Thanks for the info! I love these animated commercials along with Transformers, Air Raiders, Starriors & Visionaries. All produced by Marvel and made by Hasbro..aside from Starriors which was owned by TOMY! Ah the great times of old!
The jingle vocalists in these commercials must have become a very wealthy men during this era. It just wouldn't have been the without them; so shamelessly dramatic.
Notice that every one of these commercials advertised an issue that introduced a new toy. They were selling both comics and tells simultaneously here!
No. Hawk was the original field command of the Joes while Gen. Flagg was in charge. When Flagg was injured, Hawk was promoted to General and Duke took over in the field. Hawk was around a good 18 issues before Duke was introduced and his toy was part of the original team. Only in the cartoon was Duke the leader and then only until Gen. Hawk was reintroduced
after seeing these great old school joe commercials ive come to one Epic conclusion.
the New Gi Joe movie is going to suck MAJOR ASS.
why do all these films now, X-Men, Wolverine and Gi Joe have to go the super realistic route instead of sticking to the shit that worked like Star Trek , the Dark Knight and Spiderman did so well.
the new joe trailer looks like crap compaired to these old commercials.
I am in total agreement with you. I have been trying to contact the new SHOUT! FACTORY DVD producer of the new G.I.Joe compilation. I want them to get good copies of these awesome commercials and put them on the new DVDs as bonus materials.
These commercials actually top the actual daily show from back in the day.
Whether it is the comic or regular animations, it is true. The new movie has a high bar to surpass and I will be the first to say it sucks because I have loved this since 1983.
you mean duke looks alot like hawk. duke was introduced later in the series. and was in the forefront of the cartoons. by that time hawk was made general of the joes replacing general flagg(the name of the joes aircraft carrier)
Probably one of the greatest, all around comic book series ever written.
