The U of S physics professor (i.e. Jean-Pierre St.-Maurice) is just throwing out something without backing himself up. I did research on "auroral sounds" and most articles on the subject say that NO recordings exist of auroral sounds but people may be experiencing the sounds as the electromagnetic waves or fast-moving particles directly affect the brain or the auditory nerves. The sounds have been variously described as "crackling, rustling, swishing or hissing".

That is just the sounds of the electromagnetic field. On the same day there were huge amounts of solar flares with many different side effects. I know of people that live as far south as Northern Arizona that saw glimpses of the Aurora Borealis that evening.
