The first automated garages were built in the US in the 1930s. It puts more cars in much less space because ramps and wide aisles are not needed. It is much safer and theft and damage are virtually eliminated. The Japanese are very smart.

Not necessarily. If the cars are parked mechanically, you don't need to leave room for people to open their doors. Plus, you don't need such wide lanes between parking spaces. Also, you can park on multiple floors vertically without needing so much extra space for ramps.
