Tito Ramos had been a staple on the Latin scene since the ’60s when he joined the band of his High School friend, Johnny Colón.Producer George Goldner asked if they could work something up over d vamp from an old Cuban standard. Tito leaped @ the opportunity 2 write the lyrics 4 the new song. [...] Tito got fed up with not getting credit he felt he deserved.“If you listen 2 the Boogaloo Blues album & Boogaloo ’67, all d songs that I did vocals on I did lyrics on.” He told Goldner he ws leavin
@corbond1 Yes,they are,and it doesnt neccessarily have to be LSD,but all the other drugs that came after. Since this song came out back in the days when LSD was in full swing, they merely were expanding upon that prospect in this song, sweetheart.
When I was a kid,my sister turned me on to Synphony Sid show, late at night..Even though we had school the next day,we didnt care...It was a time of my life that remains timeless...It helped shape me as the musician I am today...When Story,Melody and Groove were King....I grew up listening to guys harmonize in the building hallways...Thank you for your supreme inspiration...Axsus718.
I loved this until I heard his voice...sounded too much like Frank Sinatra wanna be...music alone woulda been just fine! Also, reminds me "drink the wine, ...." love it!
I was an African American living in Metro D.C. going to college in Houston and all my New York friends blue me away with Boogaloo Blues and Gysy Woman. 2 tunes that are stuck in my mind forever. The trombone work still puts me me in another world 40 years later! Mike B.
I was an African American living in Metro D.C. going to college in Houston and all my New York friends blue me away with Boogaloo Blues and Gysy Woman. 2 tunes that are stuck in my mind forever. The trombone work still puts me me in another world 40 years later!
our young minds writting the best music of their time it was 67 and we were jumping and dancing to the most beautifull sounds of ourtime our mamis look as beautifull as ever and so were the guys with their monhair and gator shoes and there was papo, chachi, shorty, mousy, billy, willie, bronx, bklyn, manhattan.all meeting at the st.george hotel.how i miss those times, nuestra musica siempre vivira
How many of you remember "El corso"? or the Paladium on latin night? Remember Joe Cuba "Bang Bang"? I'll never go back to Georgia, I'll never go back? And then there was Mongo and Eddie Palmieri and it was rhythm that you went to sleep with and woke up with and did everything in your life with the cowbell in time with your heart and the congo ruling your feet. Those were times to remember. And the Colon brothers were right there with the rest, on top.
THIS IS A NEW YORK CLASSIC,JOHNNY COLON HAD A SWINGINNG BAND,HE PLAYED PIANO AND HAD SOME OF NY BEST TROMBONES.THE JOHNNY COLON LATIN SWING WAS THE MIX OF SALSA.. GRACIAS JOHNNY
LOVE THIS CLASSIC ! REMEMBER LIVING @ E. 152 ST ADAMS PROJECTS BRONX N.Y. & MY VISITS TO RELATIVES IN BKLYN SOUTH SIDE AS A TEENAGER! JOHNNY, YOU CERTAINLY HAD 'THE LOOK & THE SOUND' CONGRATULATIONS FELLOW BORICUA, YOUR DEVOTION TO MUSIC & THE KIDS CONTINUE TO BE A POSITIVE RICAN FORCE!!
MI SANTAS MEMORIAS QUE SE QUEDARON EN BROOKLYN -327 DE ELERY STREET-AHI TAMBIEN RECUERDO AL MAESTRON JHONNY COLON CON SU BOOGALOO BLUE -RECUERDOS Y CUANDO ERA MIEMBRO DE LA GANGA THE BLACK DIAMOND"RECUERDOS DE LA P.S .111- SALUDOS JHONNNY.
I remember when the lead singer, Tito Ramos, and I, were both heading over to 106th and Madison Avenue when Joe Bataan came over to us. He wanted to blow harmony (doo-wops) but Tito said we couldn't as we had somewhere to go. Bataan pulled out a knife and put it to Tito's throat and said: "Ya' gonna sing now, motherfucker." And so Tito sung baritone and I second tenor with Bataan singing lead. Man! That was one memorable night in 1962 when we sang the hell out of 'em doo-wop blues.
I forgot to mention my tribute to this dynamite tune...when my daughter Lisa married in 2007, this was the song I chose where Dad dances with the Bride (quite a departure from your traditional Daddy's little girl or Nina Bonita wouldn't you say)?
And my final nuance on this song(I won't bug anyone after this), right at the beginning vocals where Johnny sings "when I thought the world was mine"(and begins) "& as I "-catch his beautiful flicker on the keys he never repeats in the song again.
This classic is a complete diamond. There isn't enough space for me to comment on all that is so beautiful about this gem,but here are a few(this l.e.s. presentao from that era still appreciates) :Talk about soul singing? Just listen to Johnny pour out at 3:34 "oh...my love" , his hum at the very end before the song fades, how one of the T&T boys(best unison b/u vocals btw) throws in "talk to me baby" when Johnny calls the waiter over, the bass,t-bones harmony, handclaps- great, great groove !!!
It's too bad that the puerto rican youth aren't being taught about this musical legacy. I was a young kid when this album came out and I'll never forget about it. It was definately a different era.
Oh my God, this brings me soooo many memories! I loved this song and, man, great to dance to. Tito Ramos on vocals. Hi Tito!!! What a voice!!!!!!! Luv ya,
Cono... this brings back so many memories... Symphony Sid, Dick ricardo Sugar, Joe Gaines. skipping class...going to a set.. curtains drwan... ladies swaying to the grooves... Boogaloo Blues, Jazzy, King Nando singing Fortuna.. Man whoever posted this ... THANK YOU!
I was in Viet Nam and one of my buddies gave me this album as he was going "back to the World" it was introduction to latin Jazz being from los Angeles, luckily I was able to find it on Cd!
For lack of a better explanation,I am that girl he is referring to. If only i had met a man with his compassion,i might live to tell about it..,You know,it's true what they say about love,"It conquers all". But unfortunately, you have to find it first.
Ah yes, the Boogaloo Blues: Takes me back to the basement house parties in Jamaica Queens 1967--when the living was easy and the women were feminine. This song was an instant among blacks and Puerto Ricans, back in the day, when we shared wine women and song. This "cut" in the Afro-Cuban genre, though Jonny Colon is of Puerto Rican heritage, merely shows how diverse cultures, out of love and mutual respect, can blend and fuse their respective gifts to create something beautiful.
@zulukahn213 Thank you! I couldn't figure it out. I was looking the video up for a friend of mine, also a nuyorican, who grew up in the Bronx, where they also had basement house parties. You might remember my friend's brother, Ralfi Pagan.
OMG I love the boogaloos, and there were until now, not many Boogaloo songs here...Those were the days , when it was in NYC, PUERTORICAN POWER...This RYTHEM took over AMERICA, and conquered all...Thanks for sharing.. brings back great memories, VERY HAPPY memories...THANKS...
