Ben you da' man ! Thanks for sharing your politics, your music and those " low tech" Tabs ! LOL
Keep at it brother ben the picker man !
Oh, and seeings how it is 2012 and an election year, can we expect another swimmingly appropriate lesson ? say " Shall we gather at the river", or maybe that Roy Clarke fav " Thank God and Greyhoud he's Gone' ? ;)
Brother Ben, the "currently" low-tech, highly skilled, God blessed guitar brother from another mother!!! I appreciate your lessons, and if I could get a lesson on "will the circle be unbroken," that'd help me so I could play it in front of the church congregation! Look forward to all your lessons! Thnx Andy in brown county IN.
P.S. I imagine you're very busy, so if you don't have time I understand.
Nice playing man! I really enjoyed it!! What kind of strings do u recommend and use on your guitar that are good for bluegrass? And another question... Do you have any videos that are like banjo lessons for beginners? I just bought a banjo this week and I'm wanting to learn off Internet and I need to find some lessons that explains like how all the rolls work and how you put it all together and stuff like that.
@mckinneywes Hey bud! I personally use Elixir mediums, but there are several great strings out there. I also really like the D'Addario strings :) On the website, I have LOTS of beginner banjo stuff that will get you going. I have a whole 30 minute video lesson that talks specifically about how to apply your right hand rolls and mix and match them. I have lots of other beginner vids as well. I'd be honored to have you on board!
Dude, it's so awesome watching this video(when you didnt have a website and used a webcam) to your more recent vids(with a site and a HQ camera). Really cool seeing how you've progressed and the fact that you're still doing free YouTube lessons. Right on, man!
oh my... the "i'll fly away" tabs arent on the free tabs section of the website , so gutted, wanted to play this song to passers by on my front lawn !
Love the video man i watch em all the time and the guy Berea KY thats where I'm form so I was kinda shocked you knew people from there but keep on the good work on the vids
This guy has got a lot of charm, Good instructor too. You don't need tabs for this stuff. Its better to use your ear. Try singing the melody before you learn to pick it.
loves yr videos banjo Ben..its great stuff,,and im picking up plenty of new tunes and ideas.....cant beleive some can be negative about it.geeee what do they want??their money back...gggggeeeesh
Thanks for the cool solo to a classic tune. I am impressed with how well you play the guitar considering you are after all, "Banjo Ben"! Keep them coming as I need some help in the Bluegrass department! You go man!
awesome guitar pickin keep it up, i really enjoy it . I play by ear cant read tabs so any time i hear someone like you its nice to be able to push replay.thanks for taking time to share the gift god gave you!
Very nice stuff Ben! Thanx for taking the time to post these lessons here! I really like the way you teach the songs, and how you take the time to explain stuff to us. Thank you for this SO much, my band is also thanking you as well... :)
Nice! Such a simple tune, and you did some great stuff with the melody here. Thanks again Ben.. ...and..... your tabs that are now on your website sure have come a long way from this 8-) You have any CD's in the works with the family by chance?
What model Taylor is that? its kinda hard learning anything online, for me anyway, but i like getting on here just to hear you play :) still good video. And i loved the election comment hahaha, i wanted to fly away too haha
Ben, This is country-fine picking that one Tony Rice would love to hear. Do you know if he's checking out your site? Thanks so much for your great work. Jud
Hi, I really do appreciate your so clean right hand picking style, I´m playing for 20 years ago and now I´m trying to clean my style and picking the strings in a style like the yours, with right hand floating,I find it´s a best way to play. I do the ventures stuff in a strat and I´d like to be a better player, trying to play like joe maphis and similar 50s bluegrass/country players. I find your style perfect. So please, any advice or exercise to get keeping my hand floating and sure? Thanks!
@filthyrichs I worked at developing my right hand, and I've learned to play everything I play without resting a finger or my wrist. Just get a metronome & start slow, 60 beats per minute, playing 2 notes per click, and play through scales, fiddle tunes, whatever you play, and give yourself plenty time to develop, and speed up gradually. Also, get Jeff Troxel's "Right Hand Workout" from flatpick.com -- it's a course of things to play while building your right hand. Explains this better, too! Ha.
@JAEZUZ15 --- Personally, I'd rather hear Ben TALK than hear most other guitar pickers PLAY. And when he PLAYS, wow -- what a teacher, what a motivator, all those things. Maybe the people here who whine and complain are those who are a little jealous? Maybe they WANT to be this good, but don't have the perseverance to work hard and learn to do this, too. Maybe.
@inky960 - sometimes... it all depends on the style of music you play (: i mean... i'm great at guitar... not at this style, though... and i've got a couple friends that really tear up the fretboard... but can't play this... soo yehh... just a thought xD you're right.. great teacher, though :D
@hekkuta Maybe I should have said, "play this well." It doesn't matter what style or which styles of guitar you play. They can all be hard, and to play musically in ANY style takes musicianship, which is hard won for most of us. Some are seemingly born doing it (Mark O'Connor, Mozart, et al - and not that O'Connor's as good as Mozart)... but this stuff, flatpicking, is HARD -- technically as challenging as bebop, probably. Or *digitally* - meaning your hands have to do.
@stringbender57 um..... do you know how old this video is??? This is after the '08 election not the recent ones..... Maybe an education on reading would be needed in your future???
@caleb101089 - Hey, I am perfectly aware of when the video was posted. I also read quite well, thank you very much. I did not mean to offend BanjoBen1 in any way at all. His picking amazes me! I admire his musical talent, ability to play several instruments and his willingness to share what may take some people forever to learn. Many thanks to BanjoBen1. In fact, I'll remove my comment so you can get your knickers out of a knot. Peace!
@edonotokyo This is his video - his channel. And he can say whatever he likes. And you can go away if you're so disturbed by it that you have to go and make yourself look like an idiot (like your comment does).
@ugee467 he has dozens of video lessons on here for free, and a website with tabs, what more r u expecting??? oh and, its a video, u can skip parts if u want
@BanjoBen1 still enjoy ur videos, i think its awesome u r willing to do what ur doing with these lessons, not many ppl wud spend this amount of time doing lessons for free
Hey B.Ben, great guitar video -- you're as good as an instructor gets -- good job.
And hey just for "carabachi" information -- Mr. Ohbono is going down down down in ALL of the polls. What we have here is Newton's fourth law of motion:
All progressives sink to their natural level of incompetence. (<:
Download power tab software, I think it's the best free tablature software out there. I've wrote breaks for red haired boy, salt creek, etc with it, and for me anyway it's easier to work up an arrangement using power tab and then learn it later than grinding away on the fretboard alone.
@BanjoBen1 Hiya. Absolutely fantastic lessons, very generous and patient - thank you. If you get a chance could you write that cross picking pattern for me in terms of down - up - down - down up etc. Have tried for hours to follow what you're saying but it doesn't sound right when I try to play it.... If you get a minute!
Thanks timNindia for the space bar trick, that is really good to know. fmooney you need to click on the video picture first then the space bar trick will work. Really makes it easier to learn.
Really good lessons! For those of you trying to learn on any youtube videos, you can use the "space bar" to pause, and to resume. It helps tremendously while learning.
hey man you play realy great! :D i'm practising this stuff on guitar non stop vor i think 3 days now , haha but i just cant figur out what your playing :s , maby its easyer is you scan the taB in de computer and show it so we can C it realy good :D ? any how thanks for making these video's!!
is there any chance someone can try and put a version of this tab on a website because not be harsh but i really cant read it. and it would be a big help please
Great tutorials, thanks. Can you comment on your guitar sound - sounds much like a banjo - special strings or other instr components. Of course the playing definitely shows the banjo influence. I think David Rawlings elicits a similar quality of sound from the 6 string.
Hi Ben, greetings from france! Your videos are great and it's so generous from you to just sit in front of the cam and give us bits of what you know. I was wondering if you could explain some right hand technique. It seems that you don't touch the guitar with your palm, do you? Thanks a lot for everything.
Howdy from Music City, USA! Thanks for watching! My palm very lightly brushes the endpins on the guitar...my technique tends to change a bit from time to time, but that's what's going on right now :)
suggestion: Create a scale chart in MS Paint, and save it as a "Master" document. Then you can use the Master to create Tabs for various songs, SAVING them separately according to whatever song it is. You can then offer the saved Tab for whatever song someone wants, to anyone who sends you an e-mail address to send it to.
Thanks for sharing such an inventive version of that tune. I hear Tony Rice all over the place with that jazz or blues sensibility overlaid on a standard bluegrass tune. Love it! After I learn this I may pass on a request.
It is nothing but a pleasure learning this great stuff with you instructions. Thanks man and I may want to fly away with you folks after the elections. Peace!
Hello Ben, Greetings from England U.K One song I would love for you to teach would be OH SUZANNA in the key of C if possible so I can play it with my harmonica as a beginner could you show it in the bass strum style using open C, F ,G7 or G all these song tabs are hard to find in the U.K
Thanks for the lessons Ben! I appreciate your time and efforts!
I may want to fly away with you come Nov. 05! ha ha
Could you do this same type of lesson for another older A.E. Brumley song, "Jesus Hold My Hand" please!?! I do believe that is (one of) my favorite. I would greatly appreciate it. Could you do it in "D" or a key with the capo in the "D" position.
Do you know how long I've been looking for a spicy, snappy version of this song? FOR-E-VER!!! Thanks a bunch. I really like this version a lot.
Quick note to everybody: Pay attention to the string names at the beginning of the tab as this was written on manuscript paper (5 lines) and not standard tab paper (6 lines).
I'm learning music and like your integration of the rhythm/timing with the tab numbers. This gives me an idea of how to write my own. Thanks.
This is indeed an amazing song. Its the first song I ever learned to play on an instrument. I learned it on bass when I turned 13... its been a good 4 years and now I can play it on 5 different instruments!
man ..great playin and tone ..I been playin a tele for years but now am getting into bluegrass..I rally like your phrasing..tasty stuff..have to know what kind of guitar u have GREAT TONE!
hey there banjoben how are ya? hope your doin great wanted to know whens tha next time your gunna be in or around north carolina so hope to hear from ya soon wanna play some guitar with ya well take care alrite thanks clay!
hey Ben lovin it all up and have a request you need to sing some vocals and get more in to detail with some of your lessons slow it down a bit and describe what your doing more your the man!! need more:)
This is just what I am have been looking for!!! I have bought books and videos that will show you licks till they come out your ears. But nothing on how and where to apply them. I think that if a new picker can learn guitar solos for songs that are known to them than they can pick out the licks in the song and apply them to other songs where they can make them fit. That would help me out alot. Also, good try on the tab but I couldn't make out skwat.
I will help you out for helping me out... if you send me a message I will get you some tab software... and a video overlay program so you can scroll those tabs while your doing you lesson thing... I come from a long line of blue grass pickers but I wasted my youth learning songs to impress women, I wanna learn how to flat pick better to impress myself, and cuz I cant afford lessons this is the route imma take! shoot me a PM friend.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I discovered your channel a month ago and have practiced more in the last month than I have since I quit music school 5 years ago.
PS. I think the slowed down version of this break sounds great, too.
Hi, I have a request. It's another old hymn called Angel band. Emmylou Harris, the Stanley Brothers, and the Peasall Sisters all have versions. It's one of my favorites. Anyway, I enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting um'. Guitar Ben: from good ol' PA.
as aguitarist I make a great singer but I have learned more in two hours of your lessons than I have in the last 15 years of mucking around with my guitar(none of the guys i work with will share their knowlege.I finaly might be able to add some good guitarwork to my vocals...thanks you rock..oh I mean bluegrass!!!
Good luck! I started on the piano, too...which is my main instrument. It definitely makes learning other instruments easier! Looking forward to your videos!
this was a nice song, i must try to watch the tab carefully ;) Ben, can you tell that are country licks based on certain pattern or chords shapes? how can i start doing my own runs in a song?
I think some people do, man. I don't personally do it that way. I think more in terms of what notes or melody I want to hear, then I find my position that allows it to happen. I think you learn more that way, though it takes longer. Positions are great to know, for sure. I just don't think with that mindset.
Ben you da' man ! Thanks for sharing your politics, your music and those " low tech" Tabs ! LOL

doublenickle61 2 years ago
Really good lessons! For those of you trying to learn on any youtube videos, you can use the "space bar" to pause, and to resume. It helps tremendously while learning.

is there any chance someone can try and put a version of this tab on a website because not be harsh but i really cant read it. and it would be a big help please
rubberducky1985 2 years ago
Ben,
Great tutorials, thanks. Can you comment on your guitar sound - sounds much like a banjo - special strings or other instr components. Of course the playing definitely shows the banjo influence. I think David Rawlings elicits a similar quality of sound from the 6 string.

Hi Ben, thanks for your answer. Keep on the sunny side!

Hi Ben, greetings from france! Your videos are great and it's so generous from you to just sit in front of the cam and give us bits of what you know. I was wondering if you could explain some right hand technique. It seems that you don't touch the guitar with your palm, do you? Thanks a lot for everything.
thompicking 2 years ago
Howdy from Music City, USA! Thanks for watching! My palm very lightly brushes the endpins on the guitar...my technique tends to change a bit from time to time, but that's what's going on right now :)

suggestion: Create a scale chart in MS Paint, and save it as a "Master" document. Then you can use the Master to create Tabs for various songs, SAVING them separately according to whatever song it is. You can then offer the saved Tab for whatever song someone wants, to anyone who sends you an e-mail address to send it to.

Dude you are one smooth picker! Your videos are interesting to just watch, not to mention packed full of great information. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing such an inventive version of that tune. I hear Tony Rice all over the place with that jazz or blues sensibility overlaid on a standard bluegrass tune. Love it! After I learn this I may pass on a request.
Thanks so much.

Hello Ben, Greetings from England U.K One song I would love for you to teach would be OH SUZANNA in the key of C if possible so I can play it with my harmonica as a beginner could you show it in the bass strum style using open C, F ,G7 or G all these song tabs are hard to find in the U.K
Best Wishes Nick
NICKFROMESSEX 3 years ago
Really great tutorial. Very clean playing. Is that a 612C you are playing? I have one just like it and use it on my guitar channel.
I've recorded simpler versions of this song on both guitar and ukulele - it is a great piece to play.
Thanks

Thanks for the lessons Ben! I appreciate your time and efforts!
I may want to fly away with you come Nov. 05! ha ha
Could you do this same type of lesson for another older A.E. Brumley song, "Jesus Hold My Hand" please!?! I do believe that is (one of) my favorite. I would greatly appreciate it. Could you do it in "D" or a key with the capo in the "D" position.
Thanks again

Do you know how long I've been looking for a spicy, snappy version of this song? FOR-E-VER!!! Thanks a bunch. I really like this version a lot.
Quick note to everybody: Pay attention to the string names at the beginning of the tab as this was written on manuscript paper (5 lines) and not standard tab paper (6 lines).
I'm learning music and like your integration of the rhythm/timing with the tab numbers. This gives me an idea of how to write my own. Thanks.

Do you by any chance play mandolin? If you do you should post some videos up there on it.

HA! I love the reference to the elections.
This is indeed an amazing song. Its the first song I ever learned to play on an instrument. I learned it on bass when I turned 13... its been a good 4 years and now I can play it on 5 different instruments!
Thanks for this video! Its awesome!

hey Ben lovin it all up and have a request you need to sing some vocals and get more in to detail with some of your lessons slow it down a bit and describe what your doing more your the man!! need more:)
dodico20 3 years ago
Bjo Ben,
This is just what I am have been looking for!!! I have bought books and videos that will show you licks till they come out your ears. But nothing on how and where to apply them. I think that if a new picker can learn guitar solos for songs that are known to them than they can pick out the licks in the song and apply them to other songs where they can make them fit. That would help me out alot. Also, good try on the tab but I couldn't make out skwat.
buck828 3 years ago
I will help you out for helping me out... if you send me a message I will get you some tab software... and a video overlay program so you can scroll those tabs while your doing you lesson thing... I come from a long line of blue grass pickers but I wasted my youth learning songs to impress women, I wanna learn how to flat pick better to impress myself, and cuz I cant afford lessons this is the route imma take! shoot me a PM friend.

Great gospel tune Ben! Thank you for posting. You keep it interesting.
christisnum1 4 years ago
this was a nice song, i must try to watch the tab carefully ;) Ben, can you tell that are country licks based on certain pattern or chords shapes? how can i start doing my own runs in a song?
OnTheRanch 4 years ago
I think some people do, man. I don't personally do it that way. I think more in terms of what notes or melody I want to hear, then I find my position that allows it to happen. I think you learn more that way, though it takes longer. Positions are great to know, for sure. I just don't think with that mindset.
